Superficial fungal infections in children and adolescents.

Children with superficial fungal infections are commonly seen in clinical practice. Although tinea capitis and tinea corporis are the most common childhood mycoses, thrush and candida diaper dermatitis also occur frequently in infants. At times, diagnosis can be a challenge, but is made easier with the use of the potassium hydroxide microscopy and fungal cultures. Most childhood superficial fungal infections are adequately treated with topical antifungal medication. These medications are effective and the majority are safe for use in children. Oral antifungal drugs are required for children wi

A study of 3891 cases of mycoses in the tropics.

4103 cases suspected of mycoses were analysed as to sex, age and site of disease and 3891 were proved cases. This group formed 50% of total mycoses or 13-93% of all dermatoses recorded in the Government General Hospital, Madras, during the period of study. There were 66-26% adult female, 27-6% adult male and 6-14% were below 13 years. Dermatophytoses were found in 73-5%; the other common diseases were tinea versicolor (17-68%) and candidiasis (12-43%). Multiple sites of involvement or more than 1 disease in the same individual were mostly observed. The incidence of piedra (0-1%) and deep mycos

Epidemiologic study of dermatophytoses in Salamanca (Spain).

An epidemiologic study of the dermatophytoses in Salamanca (Spain) from 1973 to 1976 was performed. Dermatophyte species were identified in 224 patients with clinical tinea infections; 31 bovines, 18 rodents and 70 soil samples. The prevalence of Trichophyton verrucosum and Epidermophyton floccosum was strikingly high in relation to other statistics. The most common clinical forms were tinea corporis and tinea cruris. Tinea capitis by anthropophilic species was uncommon.

Epidemiologic surveillance of cutaneous fungal infection in the United States from 1999 to 2002.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous fungal infections are common in the United States, and causative organisms include dermatophytes, yeasts, and nondermatophyte molds. These organisms are in constant competition for their particular environmental niche, often resulting in the emergence of one or more predominant pathogens and displacement of other less competitive species. Changes in the incidence of fungal pathogens can be followed from laboratory culture results of infected cutaneous tissues over time. These data can be used to ascertain past and present trends in incidence, predict increases in antifung

Tinea corporis due to Trichophyton violaceum: A report of two cases.

Dermatophytes are Fungi which infect keratinized tissues, that is, skin epidermis, hair and nails. Trichophyton violaceum is an anthropophilic, cosmopolitan dermatophyte. It primarily causes tinea capitis and less commonly tinea corporis and tinea unguium. We present a report of two cases of tinea corporis due to T. violaceum in children. Infections due to T. violaceum are important because of its transmissibility within families and community and its potential to spread and establish in new geographical areas.

Pathophysiology of dermatophyte infections.

Dermatophyte infections are among the most common infections encountered in medicine. Often considered trivial, these infections are in fact frequently refractory and recurrent. This article presents an overview of the causes, symptoms, differential diagnosis, and clinical course of the most prevalent dermatophyte infections: tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea capitis, tinea corporis, and onychomycosis. Complicated situations such as follicular involvement, dermatophytoses in patients who are immunocompromised, and the exaggerated response to zoologically acquired fungal infections are also disc

Photodynamic therapy combined with antifungal drugs against kerion: A report of six cases and literature review.

Kerion, a severe manifestation of tinea capitis caused by dermatophytes, is a fungal skin disease primarily affecting children. This report discusses six cases of pediatric kerion that were successfully treated with a combination of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and antifungal agents. Additionally, we conducted a literature review, identifying and analyzing six published reports on kerion and tinea capitis. The characteristics and efficacies of these cases are summarized. In summary, early combination therapy and proactive pre-treatment interventions proved effective in maximizing therapeutic out

Spectrum and burden of dermatophytes in children.

Tinea capitis is the most important superficial fungal condition in children. It is often unrecognised but the presence of alopecia, scale and lymphadenopathy, especially in inner-city children should prompt investigation. An understanding of changing epidemiology and prevalence of causative organisms is important in deciding appropriate therapy. The use of diagnostic aids including dermoscopy is increasing and is reported to be helpful in identifying subtle signs. Trichophyton tonsurans accounts for the majority of cases in the UK and terbinafine is increasingly advocated as a safe and effect
