Supernumerary teeth in anthropoid primates and models of tooth development.

Supernumerary teeth are usually regarded as de-novo structures that result from abnormal development by the splitting of a tooth germ. The notions of abnormal and de novo appear to be applicable in only one instance, the morphological dental twin. All other types of supernumerary deciduous teeth can be explained by either a progress zone or an interstitial budding model of tooth differentiation. The development of extra structures as well as the loss of normally-present teeth can be explained by differences in potential within the context of normal development.

Surgical Management of Large Radicular Cyst Associated with Mandibular Deciduous Molar Using Platelet-rich Fibrin Augmentation: A Rare Case Report.

Radicular cysts arising from deciduous teeth are rare and usually cause a large bony defect. Autologous platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is an easily available healing biomaterial in oral surgical defect with the new perspective of accelerated healing of a large bony defect. The present case is of unusually large radicular associated with neglected carious mandibular deciduous second molar in 10-year-old girl and its surgical management with PRF augmentation as a healing biomaterial in the bony defect. One-year follow-up showed uneventful healing and eruption of succedaneous tooth. Healing was relat

[Extraction of the deciduous anterior teeth and its consequences in children with the nursing bottle syndrome].

On eighty children, whose rampant carious and predominant periapical diseased deciduous maxillary incisors had been formerly extracted, the outcomes of the early extraction were inspected in regard to the later development of the permanent teeth and the general state of health. For 68 children gypsum models were analysed, whether the early loss of deciduous incisors had led to deficiency of place in the front of the upper jaw. The early tooth extraction and conservation therapy resulted in a clear improvement of children's physical condition and ameliorated the starting situation of permanent

Canadian Eskimo permanent tooth emergence timing.

To identify the times of emergence of the permanent teeth of Canadian Eskimos (Inuit), 368 children and adolescents were examined. The presence or absence of all permanent teeth except the third molars was recorded and these data subjected to probit analysis. Female emergence times were advanced over males. Generally, the Inuit of both sexes showed statistically significant earlier emergence times than Montreal children, except for the incisors. The present results do not support hypotheses indicating that premature extraction of the deciduous teeth advances the emergence of their succedaneous

The earliest known reported occurrence of dentigerous cyst in a six-month-old child.

The earliest reported case of the occurrence of a dentigerous cyst is described; the cyst surrounded an unerupted permanent tooth bud in a 6-month-old infant. Most commonly these lesions present between the second and third decades of life. They rarely occur before 10 years of age and have not been documented prior to 1 year of age. In the case reported here, the treatment instituted was extraction of the adjacent deciduous tooth and enucleation of the cyst along with the permanent molar tooth bud. Clinicians should be aware of the potential for this lesion to occur across a wide range of ages

Developmental Defect of Enamel in Permanent Teeth Associated With Chronic Endodontic Abscess in Deciduous Teeth: A Retrospective Study.

OBJECTIVES: Destructive carious lesions on deciduous teeth often result in dental abscesses. Sometimes, the exudative process may extend to the dental follicle of the permanent tooth, leading to various types of consequences. This study primarily seeks to determine the prevalence of developmental defects of enamel (DDE) in premolars whose predecessors developed endodontic abscesses. Furthermore, it investigates how the prevalence of DDE is influenced by the type of treatment the affected deciduous molar received. Lastly, the study compares the prevalence of DDE between maxillary and mandibular

Developmental insights and dental formula of the Coquerel's Sifaka Propithecus coquereli (Indriidae, primates).

The question of dental reduction in primates has been a longtime debate, especially in Indriidae, where the tooth type of the dental comb has been extensively investigated. While the presence of two incisors without the canine is largely accepted today, some questions remain concerning the homology of teeth preserved in the lower postincisor dentition. Although the presence of the dc1, dp2, and dp3 is clearly distinguishable during development, two teeth disappear at the adult stage. Consequently, some authors identify the remaining postincisor replacement tooth as a P3, while some studies ind

Multiple Geminated Supernumerary Premolars: A Rare Case Report.

Supernumerary teeth may be defined as any teeth or tooth substance in excess of the usual configuration of 20 deciduous and 32 permanent teeth. Gemination is defined as an attempt by a single tooth bud to divide, with a resultant formation of either a large tooth with a bifid crown or two completely divided teeth throughout the crown and root. Geminated supernumerary premolar is a rarity and the possibility of multiple occurrences is even rarer. An exhaustive review of English literature and a PubMed search conducted using the terms "gemination" and "multiple geminated supernumerary" revealed

Compound odontoma and impaction of the lower left deciduous canine in a 4-year-old child: diagnosis and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Odontomas are the most common odontogenic tumours, often considered hamartomas rather than true neoplasms. These mixed tumours consist of fully differentiated dental tissues, including enamel, dentin, cementum, and pulp. Odontomas can be classified into compound and complex types. While typically asymptomatic, they are often discovered during routine radiographic examinations for delayed tooth eruption. The management of odontomas generally involves surgical removal, which is effective in resolving associated dental impactions. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a healthy 4-year-

A probable case of hypophosphatasia in St Bride's Lower Churchyard (1770-1849, London, UK).

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to analyse an individual whose remains are characterised by early deciduous tooth loss and multi-focal lesions on the post-cranial skeleton. MATERIALS: Skeletal remains of an immature individual buried between 1770 and 1849 in London. METHODS: The remains were examined by visual macroscopic inspection, supplemented by radiographic examination of the mandible and maxillae. A differential diagnosis with possible conditions, frequent in this archaeological context, was conducted. A comprehensive examination of dental lesions was performed to investiga

Immunoassay analysis of proteins in gingival crevicular fluid samples from resorbing teeth.

OBJECTIVE: To carry out an immunoassay analysis of biomarkers expressed in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) with the main goal of finding a useful diagnostic pattern to distinguish between resorbing deciduous teeth and nonresorbing controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A split-mouth design was used in this study with a total of 22 GCF samples collected from 11 patients in the mixed dentition. For each child, one deciduous molar with radiographic evidence of root resorption was used as the test tooth whereas the contralateral first permanent molar with formed roots was used as the control tooth. Analysis of the Clinical Status and Treatment of Facial Cellulitis of Odontogenic Origin in Pediatric Patients.

The most common cause of the development of odontogenic infection is untreated dental caries, which initially leads to pulpitis. If an odontogenic infection is left untreated, it will pass through the limiting bone plate and will infiltrate deeper structures. Odontogenic infections are different in adults and children. The study was conducted at the Department of Pediatric Otolaryngology and Pediatric Head and Neck Surgery of Upper Silesian Children's Health Center in Katowice in the 2020-2022. We included 27 patients aged 2-16 in the study. Patients were diagnosed with an active, acute odonto

Endodontic treatment of complicated traumatic deciduous teeth damage--a case report.

The 11-year-old boy was diagnosed with severe external root resorption of the tooth 11 and chronic exacerbated apical periodontitis of the tooth 12. Additionally, the tooth 12 showed signs of dilaceration. The history revealed that at the age of 5, the boy had dislocated his maxillary deciduous incisors with impaction to the tissues. The root canal treatment of the teeth 11 and 12 was performed with the application ofBiopulp, Jodoform, and Metronidazole paste to the canal. The dressings were changed every 4 weeks for 6 months. The root canals of both teeth were filled with the Resilon Epiphany

Reducing the incidence of unerupted palatally displaced canines by extraction of deciduous canines. The history and application of this procedure with some case reports.

The procedure of extracting the deciduous canine to reduce the incidence of the unerupted palatally displaced canine was first described in 1951, and an article solely devoted to the technique appeared in 1959. The procedure then virtually vanished until 1981. A prospective study published in 1988 created the first widespread interest in the method which now appears in major texts. Why the procedure succeeds is uncertain. In the 1950s non-resorption of the deciduous canine was thought to cause palatal deflection of its successor and therefore it appeared appropriate to extract the obstructing

[Individual variability in the duration of the second phase of the mixed dentition].

With a collection of dental casts from a longitudinal study of 175 orthodontically untreated probands (100 children without and 75 children with premature loss of deciduous molars and/or canines) serving as a base, the duration of the second period of mixed dentition was determined to be in relation to the probands the period of time between the gingival emergence of the first permanent buccal tooth and the full eruption of the set of teeth. The second period of mixed dentition in boys without premature loss of deciduous molars and canines lasts on an average 3.6 +/- 1.1 years and in girls 3.8

Loss of deciduous teeth and germs of permanent incisors in a 4-year-old child. An atypic prepubertal periodontitis? A clinical, microbiological, immunological and ultrastructural study.

A 4-year-old child was referred, in April 1988, to Rennes Dental School (France) for deciduous tooth mobility with premature loss of 4 deciduous teeth and germs of 2 permanent incisors. Microbiological examinations by culture revealed the presence of the periodontal pathogen Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans. Immunofluorescence of plaque samples revealed the presence of Porphyromonas gingivalis that had not been isolated by culture. Neutrophil functions were within normal ranges. Transmission electron microscopy of gingiva showed a disorganised epithelium. The connective tissue was infiltra

The dentition in the osteogenesis imperfecta syndromes.

The deciduous and permanent teeth in some patients with osteogenesis imperfecta syndromes are blue or brown and opalescent. As shown by radiologic examination, the pulp chambers and root canals are completely or partially obliterated by abnormal dentin. The junctions between the crowns and roots are more constricted than normal. Deciduous opalescent teeth lose their enamel readily and wear more easily than normal. Unusual wear does not occur as frequently in permanent opalescent teeth as in deciduous teeth. No relationship has been shown between the number of fractures or deformity and the deg

Ameloblastic fibrodentinoma with a congenitally missing second premolar tooth: a case report.

Ameloblastic fibrodentinoma (AFD) is a rare benign mixed odontogenic tumor that occurs predominantly in children and young adults. AFD is usually associated with delayed eruption of the tooth and shows painless swelling. We present a case of AFD affecting an 8-year-old Japanese girl with a complaint of delayed eruption of her left mandibular second premolar tooth. Intraoral examination did not reveal any sign of pain or swelling in the left mandible. Panoramic radiography revealed a radiolucent and well-circumscribed lesion, which contained radiopaque material at the premolar lesion of the lef
