The prevalence and severity of non-carious cervical lesions in a group of patients attending a university hospital in Trinidad.

Non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) are often encountered in clinical practice and their aetiology attributed to toothbrush abrasion, erosion and tooth flexure. This paper aims to determine the prevalence and severity of NCCLs in a sample of patients attending a university clinic in Trinidad and to investigate the relationship with medical and dental histories, oral hygiene practices, dietary habits and occlusion. Data were collected via a questionnaire and clinical examination. Odds ratios were used to determine the association of the presence of lesions and the factors examined. One hundred

The effect of a partial bite raising splint on the occlusal face height. An x-ray cephalometric study in human adults.

20 patients (18 - 50 years) with pathological attrition of upper and/or lower anterior teeth were treated, as a temporary measure, by means of a partial chrome-cobalt splint covering the palatal surfaces of the six upper front teeth. Tantalum implants to provide reference points were placed in the basal portion of upper and lower jaw bones. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken with and without the splint at the beginning of treatment and thereafter every two months till the difference between measurements was as small as possible. Changes in the occlusal face height were evaluated. Mea

Comparison of hard tissue interrelationships at the cervical region of teeth based on tooth type and gender difference.

CONTEXT: Cementoenamel junction (CEJ) represents the anatomic limit between the crown and root surface. With advancing age and continuous eruption, this area becomes exposed in the oral media. Consequently, CEJ will be subjected to the action of various physical and chemical factors that might alter its morphology, with the cementum being affected in most cases. AIM: To identify the frequency of hard tissue interrelationships present at the CEJ in relation to different genders, positions and aspects of tooth using a light microscope. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cervical regions of 80 permanen

[Multi-factoriality of dentine hypersensitivity].

INTRODUCTION: Dentine hypersensitivity has been defined as a sharp, short pain arising from exposed dentin in response to stimuli typically thermal, evaporative tactile, osmoticor, chemical and which cannot be ascribed to any other form of dental defect or pathology. PREVALENCE: The most affected patients range in age from 20 to 40. The following teeth tend to be most sensitive: cuspids, premnolars and incisors, location-concentrated on the facial surface. MORPHOLOGICAL BASES OF DENTINE HYPERSENSITIVITY: Sensitive teeth have much greater numbers of open tubules per unit area and the average d

Hexahedrally based crystals in human tooth enamel.

Mg-containing calcium phosphate crystals including pseudocuboidal, rhombohedral shapes and groupings of quadrangular blades cubically arranged were found in human tooth enamel by scanning electron microscopy and by electron probe microanalysis. In caries-free old enamel, these hexahedrally based crystals measuring 0.5-2.5 microns in length were observed in some crevices of tufts and lamellae. The crystals were rarely seen in the inner crevices of caries-free exfoliated deciduous enamel and none could be seen in sound young enamel. In brown-coloured old enamel possessing arrested caries with la

Soft tissue root coverage as treatment for cervical abrasion and caries.

Root exposure caused by gingival recession may result in cervical abrasion, root caries, root sensitivity, and compromised esthetics. Although cervical root lesions can be treated with Class V restorations, there may be advantages in treating them with soft tissue grafts for root coverage since they restore the dento-gingival unit to its prerecession condition. The rationale for root coverage with soft tissue grafts is reviewed and two cases are presented of successful root coverage procedures in which gingival recession associated with cervical abrasion and caries was present.

Dental erosion in industry.

Five hundred and fifty-five acid workers were examined between March 1962 and October 1964. One hundred and seventy-six (31·7%) were affected by industrial dental erosion at the first examinations. In 33 cases (6·0%) the dentine was affected. During the period of the survey, 66 (20·4%) of 324 workers examined more than once showed evidence that erosion was progressing. The prevalence and incidence of erosion were highest among battery formation workers, lower among picklers, and least among other processes covered by the survey. The age of workers did not appear to influence their susceptibili

Assessment of bond strength and bioactivity on a prototype resin-based luting agent containing a novel bioactive monomer.

A prototype luting agent based on a resin composite containing a novel bioactive monomer (a calcium salt of 4-methacryloyloxyethyl trimellitate; CMET) was developed, and its shear bond strength to tooth materials (dentin and enamel) and bioactivity was compared with those of commercially available resin-based luting systems. Extracted bovine incisors were embedded in a mold with a potting material. The labial bonding surface of the embedded tooth was wet-ground using #400 silicon carbide abrasive paper until sufficient superficial enamel or dentin was exposed. The bonding and luting agents ass

Characteristics of noncarious cervical lesions: a clinical investigation.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the authors' in vivo investigation was to analyze the characteristics of noncarious cervical lesions, or NCCLs, in adult patients who had a high incidence of them. METHODS: The patient pool consisted of a total of 57 patients and 171 teeth (three teeth per patient), with one NCCL per tooth. The characteristics the authors evaluated were shape, dimensions, sensitivity, sclerosis and occlusion. RESULTS: In terms of lesion characteristics, 91 percent of the lesions had axial depths of 1 to 2 millimeters, 49 percent had occlusogingival widths of 1 to 2 mm, 74 percent h

Adhesive interface between resin and etched dentin of cervical erosion/abrasion lesions.

The interfacial structure between an adhesive composite resin and the dentinal walls of cervical erosion/abrasion lesions etched with 37% phosphoric acid gel for 60 seconds was investigated. Almost all dentinal tubules were occluded with rod-like structural depositions that remained undissolved even after acid conditioning. The hybrid layer between the adhesive resin and surface-demineralized dentin was found to be 0.3 to 3 microns, much thinner than that routinely found in either normal dentin or cariously affected dentin. The hybrid layer was thinnest at the occlusal walls of the cavity wher

Interproximal wear facets and tooth associations in the Paşalar hominoid sample.

Interproximal wear facets were examined on hominoid teeth from the middle Miocene site at Paşalar, Turkey. The aim was to find matches between adjacent premolar and molar teeth from single individuals that were collected in the field as isolated teeth and use them to reconstruct tooth rows. These were then used to investigate: (1) the wear gradient on the molar teeth; (2) the dispersal of teeth from single mandibles and maxillae; (3) the size ratios among the molars; and (4) the number of individuals represented by the hominoid sample. Facets were scored for size and shape and were assessed vi

Methodological considerations concerning the development of oral dental erosion indexes: literature survey, validity and reliability.

Within the context of preventing non-communicable diseases, the World Health Report (2002) and the WHO Global Oral Health Program (2003) put forward a new strategy of disease prevention and health promotion. Greater emphasis is placed on developing global policies in oral health promotion and oral disease prevention. The Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth (DMFT) index does not meet new challenges in the field of oral health. Dental erosion seems to be a growing problem, and in some countries, an increase in erosion of teeth is associated with an increase in the consumption of beverages containing

Conventional and anti-erosion fluoride toothpastes: effect on enamel erosion and erosion-abrasion.

New toothpastes with anti-erosion claims are marketed, but little is known about their effectiveness. This study investigates these products in comparison with various conventional NaF toothpastes and tin-containing products with respect to their erosion protection/abrasion prevention properties. In experiment 1, samples were demineralised (10 days, 6 × 2 min/day; citric acid, pH 2.4), exposed to toothpaste slurries (2 × 2 min/day) and intermittently stored in a mineral salt solution. In experiment 2, samples were additionally brushed for 15 s during the slurry immersion time. Study products w
