[Maxillary central diastema. A case study].

A case is presented with loss of two maxillary central incisors in a 12 year old girl due to the use of elastics around the teeth to close a median diastema. The patients complaint was an increased mobility of these teeth. She presented a Class I malocclusion and a supraposition of the upper central incisors. There was however an extreme periodontal destruction, as a consequence of which the central incisors had to be extracted. In connection with this case report considerations are made concerning the normal development of the dentition and the need for orthodontic treatment of a median diast

[Case report of periodontal disease with periodic neutropenia].

A case of periodic neutropenia with specific symptoms of gingiva and alveolar bone loss in primary dentition is reported. The patient was a boy, and it was followed between the ages of 3- and 9 years-old. At the period of neutropenia he was suffered from recurrent redness, swelling and bleeding of the gingiva, and also with cold-like symptoms with fever. Although the cause of these symptoms was not definite at first, even in medical exploration, we could diagnose this disease as periodic neutropenia by the process of dental therapy. By alveolar bone resorption, pocket formation and severe toot

Surgical repositioning of a developing maxillary central incisor. A case report.

BACKGROUND: A traumatic injury to the primary dentition can cause damage to the germ of the permanent successor. As a clinical consequence a dilaceration with root deformation, malpositioning and disturbances of eruption can occur. Surgical repositioning of such a dislocated crown of a developing tooth can be a treatment option. CASE REPORT: A four year old patient was referred to our clinic because of a mobile upper primary central incisor and a radiographically visible displaced dental crown. Her history revealed a traumatic dental injury one year ago. Radiologic examination confirmed an in

Conservation of root-fractured primary teeth--report of a case.

A 3.5-year-old girl presented to our clinic experiencing pain in her maxillary central incisors following traumatic injury during a fall. Radiographic examination revealed both primary maxillary central incisors with mid-root and apical third horizontal root fractures, respectively. Splinting with orthodontic brackets and stainless steel wire was performed. At 2 weeks, resorption of the apical fragments in both injured teeth was observed, and after 3 months, almost complete resorption was noted on radiographs. Tooth mobility at this point was back to physiologic levels and the splint was remov

Oral findings associated with primary hyperoxaluria type I.

In the present paper we report the oral findings of a patient who was diagnosed with hyperoxaluria. Hyperoxalurias can basically be classified as primary and secondary, with the first being inborn errors of metabolism and the second a result of excessive oxalate intake. Primary hyperoxalurias form a rare group of metabolic diseases that are inherited in the autosomal recessive fashion. The affected genes code for specific hepatic enzymes that are involved in glyoxylate metabolism and their deficiency results in overproduction of oxalate. Two different types are described: Primary hyperoxaluria

[Long-term follow-up of tooth transplantation from the functional and periodontal viewpoint].

The outcome of 81 of 99 patients being treated from 1980 to 1993 by transplantation of autologous teeth was investigated. The overall transplant survival rate was 91% after 1 year, 81% after 5 years and 70% after 9 years. The early loss of transplanted teeth was due to healing disorders. The long-term losses were due to caries and replacement resorption. Caries in tooth transplants has to be treated very early, because deep caries or deep drilling leads to an infection of the nutrient canals of the osteodentine. If the pulp chamber of a transplant is once obliterated by osteodentine, endodonti

Bisphosphonate-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw After Tooth Extraction.

Bisphosphonates are widely used for treatment or prevention of bone diseases characterized by high osteoclastic activity. Among the oral medicines used to treat osteoporosis, alendronate has been often used. Despite of the low rate of complications on its use, cases of osteonecrosis of the jaw have been reported on literature after tooth extractions. The main symptoms include pain, tooth mobility, swelling, erythema, and ulceration. The risk factors related to osteonecrosis of the jaw associated with bisphosphonate are exposition time to the medicine, routes of administration, and oral surgica

Computer-Guided Surgery Can Avoid Prophylactic Endodontic Treatment in Autologous Tooth Transplantation: A 5-Year Follow-Up Case Report.

Autotransplantation is a successful technique to replace compromised teeth. This study presents a computer-guided surgical approach for preparing the receiving socket for a mature mandibular third molar donor tooth with a wait-and-see approach instead of prophylactic endodontic treatment. A 42-year-old woman developed root resorption of tooth 3.7. Extraction of 3.7 and autotransplantation of 3.8 was planned, following a 6-week orthodontic phase for periodontal ligament activation and teeth mobilization. Due to the different root morphology between the compromised and donor teeth and the high m

Healing and prognosis of teeth with intra-alveolar fractures involving the cervical part of the root.

Healing and long-term prognosis of 94 cervical root fractures were evaluated. The teeth were divided into two groups according to type of fracture: transverse fractures limited to the cervical third of the root (51 incisors) and oblique fractures involving both the cervical and middle parts of the root (43 incisors). Neither the frequency nor the type of fracture healing differed significantly between the two groups. In the material as a whole, healing of the fracture with hard tissue formation was observed in 17 teeth (18%), and healing with interposition of periodontal ligament (PDL) and, in

Dens invaginatus: a review and case series.

Dens invaginatus is a dental anomaly resulting in an abnormal tooth morphology, most commonly affecting the permanent dentition. An associated infolding of the outer enamel organ results in structural pocketing and increased susceptibility to dental disease. Clinical sequalae of affected teeth may include dental caries, pulpal pathology, devitalisation, discolouration, localised periodontal pocketing or increased tooth mobility. Early diagnosis is therefore essential in the delivery of effective prevention and informed treatment planning. Clinicians should be aware of the diverse clinical and

A Novel Surgical Treatment Approach for Vertical Root Fractures of Endodontically Treated Molars: A Report of 3 Cases.

Background: Vertical root fracture (VRF) is a severe complication of endodontically treated teeth with a poor prognosis. Despite many tentative tooth-preserving approaches, the current main treatment remains tooth extraction or root resection, which is largely due to the difficulty in balancing the mechanical strength for fracture fixation and biological properties for periodontal healing. Moreover, all documented reports regarding VRF repairing so far were limited to anterior teeth and premolars. Thus, the objective of this case report was to present a novel surgical treatment approach for re
