Does selective root canal retreatment preserve the tooth's fracture resistance? An ex-vivo study.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the tooth's fracture resistance when submitted to a selective root canal retreatment compared to the conventional approach. METHODS: 33 intact permanent mandibular first molars were selected according to specific criteria. After teeth mounting, the primary root canal treatment was conducted and followed by thermo-mechanical aging procedures to mimic a few clinical conditions. The specimens were randomly divided into three groups (n = 11); a control group in which intact teeth were used and two experimental groups according to the retreatment approach: conventional non-su

Effects of increased surgical trauma on rates of tooth movement and apical root resorption in foxhound dogs.

PURPOSE: To experimentally determine the effects of increased surgical trauma on the rates of tooth movement and apical root resorption. Two surgical techniques for rapid protraction of multi-rooted teeth in foxhound dogs immediately following premolar extraction were compared. METHODS: Split-mouth design to randomly assign two surgical techniques [periodontal ligament distraction (RAP side) and a modified form of dentoalveolar distraction (RAP+ side)] to the maxillary quadrants. First premolars were extracted, and second premolars were protracted 0.5 mm per day for 15 days using a custom mad

Hypercementosis and odontogenic epithelial hyperplasia associated with a tooth root remnant mimicking a neoplasm. A case report.

Hypercementosis presents as painless, single or multiple non-neoplastic cementum formation beyond the physiological limits of the tooth. It often occurs in the apical area of the involved tooth following infection, chemical or mechanical trauma. We report on radiographic and histopathological findings in a single case of late intraosseous hypercementosis and odontogenic epithelial hyperplasia associated with a minute apical tooth root remnant years after its extraction, mimicking a tumour.

A new osteopetrosis mutant mouse strain (ntl) with odontoma-like proliferations and lack of tooth roots.

A new spontaneous mouse mutant (ntl) with autosomal-recessive osteopetrosis was characterized. These mice formed tartrate-resistant acid phosphate (TRAP)-positive osteoclasts but their osteoclasts had no ruffled border and did not resorb bone. These mice displayed no tooth eruption or tooth root formation. Adult mutant mice developed odontoma-like proliferations near the proximal ends of the incisors. Intraperitoneal injection of progenitor cells from the liver of 16.5 days postcoitum wild-type embryos into newborn mutants rescued the osteopetrosis phenotype, indicating that the defects were i

Localization of uncalcified cementum in adult rat molar roots and its relation to physiological tooth movement.

The study was designed to elucidate the effect of physiological tooth movement on cellular cementum, using the upper molar roots of 10-week-old rats. Paraffin sections stained with haematoxylin and eosin displayed two types of cellular cementum, lightly and darkly staining. The lightly stained was present on the distal half of all molar roots except the mesial root of the first molar. The alveolar bone facing the lightly stained cementum showed resorption lacunae and multinucleated osteoclasts, while the opposite bone surface was lined with osteoblasts. In contact microradiographs of undeminer

Examination of Irrigant Flow on a Tooth With Internal Root Resorption by Using a Computational Fluid Dynamics Model.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the flow of an endodontic irrigant in a single-rooted tooth with internal root resorption (IRR). METHODS: A simulation of a prepared central incisor with internal root resorption was created and irrigation with a 30-G needle was performed. The fluid pattern of the irrigant was evaluated using a Computational Fluid Dynamics model. In addition, the effects of the needle-insertion depth in the root canal and the size of root resorption on the fluid flow and the wall shear stress (WSS) values were assessed. The IRR was placed immediately below the canal orifice.

Endodontic approach in a replanted tooth with an immature root apex and chronic apical periodontitis: a case report.

This study describes the clinical steps taken in the treatment of a patient who had an avulsed right upper central incisor that presented with incomplete root development and chronic apical periodontitis. A 7-year-old boy was referred from a private dentist to a dental office specializing in endodontics. The tooth had remained in a dry environment for 20 minutes, and tooth replantation was performed at an emergency appointment. After clinical and radiographic examinations, root canal decontamination was performed, followed by several changes in intracanal calcium hydroxide medication. Blood cl

Evaluation of tooth discoloration after the use of experimental medication as root canal dressings: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Endodontic infections require the use of root canal dressings to reduce microorganisms, and studies of new intracanal medications are common. Two experimental intracanal medications that contain antibiotics and chlorhexidine have been proposed. However, given the composition of these medications, tooth discoloration with subsequent impacts on aesthetic parameters is a concern. The objective of this study is to evaluate tooth discoloration after the use of experimental intracanal medications for up to 180 days. METHODS: Thirty extracted bovine teeth were divided into 3 groups accor

A newer simultaneous space creation, eruption, and adjacent root control spring for the management of impacted tooth.

Welcome preparation (to create space), surgical exposure and attachment to the impacted tooth and the orthodontic guidance for the eruption of the impacted tooth. Sometimes, due to deficiency of space, creation of space for impacted tooth requires first, and space regaining efforts may require the distal movement of posterior teeth and or mesial movement of anterior teeth in the arch, but it may create some problems. To overcome the unwanted problem in this clinical situation and to reduce overall treatment duration of the patient, we have developed the Simultaneous space creation, Eruption an

Regenerative endodontic treatment of an immature permanent tooth at an early stage of root development: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Regenerative endodontic treatment (RET) has been used in treating nonvital immature permanent tooth whose root formation ranged from approximately two-thirds of the full root length to almost completely developed root with open apex at least 1.1 mm in diameter according to the reported cases. However, this case report was to introduce RET in an affected tooth at an early stage of root development. METHODS: The premolar #29 in an 8-year-old girl had pulpal necrosis and apical periodontitis caused by the fracture of dens evaginatus. Its root was at the beginning of formation. Copi

Root resection under the surgical field employed for extraction of impacted tooth and management of external resorption.

This case report illustrates determination of prognosis and immediate resection carried out, before completing the endodontic therapy, during the surgery employed for managing a nonperiodontal problem. This case showed external pressure resorption in the distobuccal root of maxillary second molar caused by the impingement of impacted third molar. Extraction of third molar was decided when healing was not seen, despite initiating endodontic therapy in second molar. Following elevation of flap and extraction of third molar, the poor prognosis due to severe bone loss around the resorbed root was
