The effect of high wear diets on the relative pulp volume of the lower molars.

OBJECTIVES: One role of dental pulp is in the upkeep and maintenance of dentine. Under wear, odontoblasts in the pulp deposit tertiary dentine to ensure the sensitive internal dental tissues are not exposed and vulnerable to infection. It follows that there may be an adaptive advantage for increasing molar pulp volume in anthropoid primate taxa that are prone to high levels of wear. The relative volume of dental pulp is therefore predicted to covary with dietary abrasiveness (in the sense of including foods that cause high degrees of wear). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined relatively unworn

Dental erosion patterns from intrinsic acid regurgitation and vomiting.

BACKGROUND: The distribution of lesions from dental erosion due to intrinsic acid regurgitation and vomiting may be different from patterns of dental erosion due to extrinsic acids. To date studies have failed to validate this assumption. This study described the sites and nature of lesions from dental erosion in cases of intrinsic acid regurgitation, and compared them with the distribution of lesions occurring in age and sex matched controls, whose lesions are due to extrinsic acids. METHODS: The University of Queensland tooth wear clinic patients were screened to select 30 cases, 21 self-id

Erosion in children: an increasing clinical problem?

Tooth wear is becoming more common in both adults and children. The triad of attrition, abrasion and erosion has been known for many years, but the contribution of erosion (irreversible loss of dental hard tissue due to a chemical process not involving bacteria, or the loss of tooth surface not directly associated with mechanical or traumatic factors or caries) to excessive loss of tooth tissue is now being emphasized. The authors of this paper examine the problem and suggest ways of overcoming it.

A scanning electron-microscopic study of in vitro abrasion of mammalian tooth enamel under compressive loads.

Microscopic tooth-wear (microwear) patterns can be an important tool for assessing modes and rates of abrasive tooth wear, but their analysis and interpretation is complicated by the fact that microwear is influenced by many factors. Three of these factors were here tested under conditions of compressive loading: (1) species differences in enamel structure, (2) abrasive particle size and (3) magnitude of force. Teeth of four species (Homo sapiens, Lemur fulvus, Ovis aries and Crocodylus rhombifer) were abraded in vitro using three sizes of abrasive silicon-carbide grit (average diameters 73, 2

Using minimally invasive aesthetic repair, dental fluorosis vertical distance of occlusion restoration: A case report.

RATIONALE: While full-coverage crowns are the conventional solution for restoring severely compromised vertical distance of occlusion restoration, this approach is inherently invasive. This report details a conservative alternative using veneers in a dental fluorosis patient - a clinical scenario seldom documented in developed regions. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 57-year-old patient from a high-fluoride area presented with impaired masticatory function and severe occlusal wear. DIAGNOSES: Severe attrition of the upper and lower dentition. Severe dental fluorosis. INTERVENTIONS: A minimally invasive

Pulp-dentin biology in restorative dentistry. Part 5: Clinical management and tissue changes associated with wear and trauma.

Tooth wear occurs during normal mastication. Pathologic wear, including abrasion and erosion, may also take place. Formation of reactionary and reparative dentin and obturation of dentinal tubules are biologic responses that compensate for the loss of tissue. Physical trauma to teeth will affect the blood supply to the pulp. Extensive physical trauma may result in the formation of mineralized, often bonelike tissue in the pulp chamber. Minor trauma, such as that associated with orthodontic tooth movement, may exert transient effects on the pulp or it may result in permanent structural changes.

A Retrospective Observational Cohort Study on the Expiration of Maxillary Cheek Teeth Infundibula in 217 Horses.

The determination of a horse's age by its dentition is a technique that has been employed by horse owners and professionals since at least 600 BC. While aging teeth based on incisor wear patterns is common, wear patterns in the cheek teeth may also be useful. As horses continue to live longer, we routinely examine horses into their 20's and 30's, and it is becoming more common to observe aging changes in the cheek teeth. To our knowledge, this study is the first to use easily obtained clinical observation of the expiration of cheek teeth infundibula to age horses of advanced ages (16 to 35 yea

Evergrowing incisors of diprotodont marsupials record age and life history.

OBJECTIVE: Tooth growth and wear are commonly used tools for determining the age of mammals. The most speciose order of marsupials, Diprotodontia, is characterised by a pair of procumbent incisors within the lower jaw. This study examines the growth and wear of these incisors to understand their relationship with age and sex. DESIGN: Measurements of mandibular incisor crown and root length were made for two sister species of macropodid (kangaroos and wallabies); Macropus giganteus and Macropus fuliginosus. Histological analysis examined patterns of dentine and cementum deposition within these

Comparative evaluation of antagonistic enamel wear against Zirconia and Bioflx in primary teeth: An in vitro study.

CONTEXT: Dental caries remains a leading cause of early tooth loss in children, often necessitating full coronal restorations. With the rising demand for esthetic restorations, preformed zirconia and the newly introduced Bioflx crowns have emerged as alternatives to stainless steel crowns. However, their effect on the antagonistic wear of primary teeth remains underexplored. AIMS: To evaluate and compare the wear of primary natural teeth when opposed by two preformed aesthetic crowns, Zirconia and Bioflex, against natural primary teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty primary teeth and 40 crow

Management of nocturnal bruxism with an anterior stop point appliance.

Bruxism is an oral parafunctional activity. The more common symptoms are tooth grinding and tooth clenching; however, many other symptoms can be related to bruxism. Dentists treat the results of this condition which may include tooth wear, tooth mobility, tooth fracture, hypertrophy of masticatory muscles, head or neck ache, or poor sleep patterns. The etiology and pathophysiology of this disorder are still unclear. Anterior stop point appliances have been shown to be beneficial in the management of the signs and symptoms associated with bruxism, including nocturnal headaches in certain patien

Dental paleopathology in a Serbian Medieval population.

Analysis of the pattern of dental disease in two Late Medieval populations from cemeteries excavated at archaeological sites in western Serbia was based on the study of tooth wear, ante-mortem tooth loss, caries, dental enamel hypoplasia, alveolar resorption, abscesses and calculus. The findings reported here show a high prevalence of attrition, alveolar resorption and caries, which suggest an abrasive diet and poor oral hygiene.

Motor control of jaw movements: An fMRI study of parafunctional clench and grind behavior.

Jaw-clenching and tooth-grinding associated with bruxism can contribute to abnormal tooth wear and pain in the masticatory system. Clench and tooth-grinding jaw-movement tasks were evaluated in a block-design fMRI study comparing a dental-control (DC) group with a tooth-grinding (TG) group. Group classification was made prior to imaging based upon self-reported parafunctional clench and grind behavior and clinical evidence of abnormal tooth wear. Group differences in brain activation patterns were found for each task compared to the resting baseline. The DC group showed a more widely distribut

Tongue piercing: impact of time and barbell stem length on lingual gingival recession and tooth chipping.

BACKGROUND: The increasing popularity of tongue piercing has prompted several case reports documenting oral complications of this practice. However, there are no studies assessing potentially significant parameters. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of time (years of wear) and tongue barbell size (stem length) on gingival recession and tooth chipping. METHODS: Fifty-two adults (mean age 22) with tongue piercings were examined for gingival recession on the lingual aspect of the 12 anterior teeth and for tooth chipping anywhere in the mouth. Subjects were grouped according to

A string of pearls.

Most complex interdisciplinary rehabilitative dental cases are associated with tooth eruption due to excessive wear or missing occlusal contacts. As the teeth erupt, the osseous tissues and dentogingival complex extrude with the tooth. Historically, prosthetic treatment demanded placing crowns on short teeth, functional crown lengthening onto root surfaces, or orthognathic surgery to impact teeth. This article will present a more current approach to the treatment of dentoalveolar extrusion.

A Comparative Evaluation of Enamel Wear Against Different Surface Finished Ceramics: An In Vitro Study.

BACKGROUND: An essential factor in the clinical acceptability of all ceramic restorations is the degree of tooth enamel wear. Wear of human enamel has been shown to produce traumatic occlusion, loss of vertical dimension, supra eruption of opposing teeth, periodontal disintegration, and temporomandibular dysfunction. To assess and compare enamel wear against two different ceramics (IPS Empress and Zirconia) and against three different ceramic surface treatments (autoglazed, overglazed, and polished). METHODS: Zirconia and IPS Empress (Ivoclar Vivadent, Liechtenstein) ceramic samples totaled 3
