Investigation of multichannel phased array performance for fetal MR imaging on 1.5T clinical MR system.

Fetal MRI on 1.5T clinical scanner has been increasingly becoming a powerful imaging tool for studying fetal brain abnormalities in vivo. Due to limited availability of dedicated fetal phased arrays, commercial torso or cardiac phased arrays are routinely used for fetal scans, which are unable to provide optimized SNR and parallel imaging performance with a small number coil elements, and insufficient coverage and filling factor. This poses a demand for the investigation and development of dedicated and efficient radiofrequency (RF) hardware to improve fetal imaging. In this work, an investiga

Desensitization to strong vestibular stimuli improves tolerance to simulated aircraft motion.

INTRODUCTION: The extent to which tolerance acquired in one motion environment can be transferred to another has not been fully elucidated. This study compares three provocative motion stimuli and whether tolerance acquired from cross-coupled motion and torso rotation can be transferred to simulated aircraft motion. METHOD: There were 18 healthy subjects (9 men and 9 women), 18-44 yr of age, who were divided into 3 groups. Each group was exposed to the following desensitization procedure in a pseudo-random repeated measures design. In condition D1, subjects were exposed to 4 consecutive days

Malignant melanoma and (18)F-FDG-PET: Should the whole body scan include the legs?

AIM: (18)F-FDG-PET (FDG-PET) is established in staging and follow-up of malignant melanoma. The legs are affected in 10-40% at time of diagnosis even if the primary is at the arms and torso. Imaging including the legs may detect distant manifestations but increases duration of the scan by approximately 30 min. We intended to disclose the diagnostic benefit of scanning the legs and to evaluate the therapeutic benefit resulting. PATIENTS, METHODS: In this retrospective analyse 213 consecutive PET studies of 153 patients with suspected or recent malignant melanoma were re-evaluated for metastati

Personalized biomechanical modeling of Boston brace treatment in idiopathic scoliosis.

The aim of this study was to describe how the Boston brace modify the scoliotic curvatures using a finite element (FE) model and experimental measurements. The experimental protocol, applied on 12 scoliotic girls, was composed of the pressure measurement at the brace-torso interface followed by two radiographic acquisitions of the patient's torso with and without brace. A 3D FE model of the trunk was built for each unbraced patient. The brace treatment was represented by two different modeling approaches: 1) using equivalent forces calculated from the measured pressures; 2) by an explicit pers

Management of neuromuscular spinal deformities with Luque segmental instrumentation.

Forty-six patients who had a neuromuscular spinal deformity were treated with arthrodesis and Luque segmental spinal instrumentation and were followed for an average of three years. Twenty-two patients had cerebral palsy and twenty-four had another neuromuscular disease. In thirty-nine patients, the arthrodesis was extended to the sacrum. Eleven patients who had severe scoliosis as well as pelvic obliquity and decompensation of the torso had a combined anterior and posterior arthrodesis; the other thirty-five patients had a one-stage posterior procedure. Preoperatively, the average scoliosis w

Postmortem submergence interval (PMSI) and human decomposition in anthropogenically constructed aqueous environments (pools, bathtubs, hot tubs, and spas).

Postmortem decomposition changes of bodies in aquatic environments may offer valuable insights into the postmortem submergence interval (PMSI) for medicolegal death investigators. However, the effects of immersion on the onset of such changes are poorly understood. The aims of this study were to augment what is known about the statistical relationship between PMSI and observable decomposition changes across three body regions (head, torso, and limbs) and to quantify the influence of extrinsic (e.g., clothing, immersion, location, and body position) and intrinsic (e.g., height, weight, BMI) mod

Use of an Intraoperative Head, Neck, and Back Support Exoskeleton on Surgeons' Pain and Posture.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of an intraoperative exoskeleton that supports surgeons' heads, necks, and backs to reduce neck discomfort. BACKGROUND: Surgeons are at a considerable risk of developing neck pain and related injuries. Passive exoskeletons are a potential intervention to support surgeons' body parts and alleviate strain and discomfort. METHODS: The NekSpine (a passive neck exoskeleton) was trialed on 12 surgeons (7 males and 5 females) across 6 specialties. Each surgeon performed 4 surgical procedures, 2 with the NekSpine (exoskeleton) and 2 without (baseline). Exoske

Single-staged total body lift after massive weight loss.

This is a retrospective clinical report of a single-staged total body lift in 8 massive weight loss patients. While the combination of circumferential abdominoplasty, a modified lower body lift, and medial thighplasty adequately treats the lower torso and thighs, the residual skin laxity in the upper torso and breasts leaves an incomplete result. Hence, a 2-stage total body lift was designed. The second stage, called the upper body lift, removes epigastric and midback rolls of skin, adjusts the inframammary fold, and reshapes the breast or corrects gynecomastia, leaving behind a near circumfer

Interactions during falls with environmental objects: evidence from real-life falls in long-term care captured on video.

BACKGROUND: Falls are the leading cause of injuries in older adults. Environmental objects (such as furniture, walls, and handrails) may act as hazards or facilitators to balance maintenance and safe landing. There is lack of objective evidence on how older adults interact with objects during falls. We addressed this gap by characterizing body part contacts with objects other than the floor during real-life falls in long-term care. METHODS: We analyzed videos of 1759 falls experienced by 584 residents to characterize the prevalence of contacts with objects before, during, and after fall initi

Comparison of DNA preservation between ribs and vertebrae.

The choice of skeletal element types and their intra-bone parts is important because of differences in DNA preservation, and this must be considered when sampling bones for DNA testing. When incomplete skeletons are found, ribs and vertebrae have been shown to be the most suitable for genetic identification of bones from the torso. This study compares the preservation of DNA between 12th thoracic vertebrae and first ribs to determine which bone type is more suitable for genetic typing. The study analyzed 35 12th thoracic vertebrae and 29 first ribs from one mass grave from the Second World War

A simulation study on the efficacy of advanced belt restraints to mitigate the effects of obesity for rear-seat occupant protection in frontal crashes.

OBJECTIVE: Recent field data analyses have shown that the safety advantages of rear seats relative to the front seats have decreased in newer vehicles. Separately, the risks of certain injuries have been found to be higher for obese occupants. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of advanced belt features on the protection of rear-seat occupants with a range of body mass index (BMI) in frontal crashes. METHODS: Whole-body finite element human models with 4 BMI levels (25, 30, 35, and 40 kg/m2) developed previously were used in this study. A total of 52 frontal crash simul

In vivo changes in adjacent segment kinematics after lumbar decompression and fusion.

The pathogenesis of lumbar adjacent segment disease is thought to be secondary to altered biomechanics resulting from fusion. Direct in vivo evidence for altered biomechanics following lumbar fusion is lacking. This study's aim was to describe in vivo kinematics of the superior adjacent segment relative to the fused segment before and after lumbar fusion. This study analyzed seven patients with symptomatic lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis (5 M, 2F; age 65 ± 5.1 years) using a biplane radiographic imaging system. Each subject performed two to three trials of continuous flexion of their tor

Tibial torque generation in a flexed weight-bearing stance.

Internal and external torque generated about the long axis of the lower extremity was measured in 18 male subjects who were instructed to twist with maximal effort against a fixed footplate containing an instrumented torque cell. Mean torque values ranged from 30 to 71 newton meters (Nm) depending upon the test conditions. Torques recorded during the flexed single-leg stance were 19% to 49% higher than those measured while seated. Values at 45 degrees of knee flexion were 11% to 16% greater than those at 20 degrees. Torques generated while wearing a ski boot were 8% to 11% greater than those r

The efficacy of a lifting strap as an ergonomic intervention for EMS providers: Does it make it easier to raise a supine patient to an upright sitting posture?

Patient handling related musculoskeletal injuries are prevalent among Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers. The first step in many patient handling situations is where a supine patient on the floor is brought to a sitting position. This study investigated whether a strap, placed under the patient's torso and long enough that EMS providers can perform the patient raising task in a standing posture, reduced muscular effort. Fifteen participants raised a simulated patient, with the help of an assistant, using the strap method and a traditional method (grasping the shoulders) in an open area,

Impact response of restrained PMHS in frontal sled tests: skeletal deformation patterns under seat belt loading.

This study evaluated the response of restrained post-mortem human subjects (PMHS) in 40 km/h frontal sled tests. Eight male PMHS were restrained on a rigid planar seat by a custom 3-point shoulder and lap belt. A video motion tracking system measured three-dimensional trajectories of multiple skeletal sites on the torso allowing quantification of ribcage deformation. Anterior and superior displacement of the lower ribcage may have contributed to sternal fractures occurring early in the event, at displacement levels below those typically considered injurious, suggesting that fracture risk is no

The effect of interpolating low amplitude leads on the inverse reconstruction of cardiac electrical activity.

Electrocardiographic imaging is an imaging modality that has been introduced recently to help in visualizing the electrical activity of the heart and consequently guide the ablation therapy for ventricular arrhythmias. One of the main challenges of this modality is that the electrocardiographic signals recorded at the torso surface are contaminated with noise from different sources. Low amplitude leads are more affected by noise due to their low peak-to-peak amplitude. In this paper, we have studied 6 datasets from two torso tank experiments (Bordeaux and Utah experiments) to investigate the i

Shape-independent object category responses revealed by MEG and fMRI decoding.

Neuroimaging research has identified category-specific neural response patterns to a limited set of object categories. For example, faces, bodies, and scenes evoke activity patterns in visual cortex that are uniquely traceable in space and time. It is currently debated whether these apparently categorical responses truly reflect selectivity for categories or instead reflect selectivity for category-associated shape properties. In the present study, we used a cross-classification approach on functional MRI (fMRI) and magnetoencephalographic (MEG) data to reveal both category-independent shape r

Comparison of two repositioning devices used during radiation therapy for Hodgkin's disease.

PURPOSE: Patients irradiated for Hodgkin's disease are fixed in an immobilization cradle to improve repositioning. In the early 1990s, we changed our cradle system from a "short" upper torso cradle to an extended near-total body cradle that also includes the lower torso and thighs. In this study, we assess the impact of the extended cradle on the reproducibility of patient repositioning during irradiation of Hodgkin's disease. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A total of 782 port films of 56 patients treated immediately before and after the change-over were studied to assess positioning reproducibility.
