Reduced Structural Connectivity in Frontostriatal White Matter Tracts in the Associative Loop in Schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: The striatum receives segregated and integrative white matter tracts from the cortex facilitating information processing in the cortico-basal ganglia network. The authors examined both types of input tracts in the striatal associative loop in chronic schizophrenia patients and healthy control subjects. METHOD: Structural and diffusion MRI scans were acquired on a 3-T system from 26 chronic schizophrenia patients and 26 matched healthy control subjects. Using FreeSurfer, the associative cortex was parcellated into ventrolateral prefrontal cortex and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex su

Sex differences in cognitive domains and their clinical correlates in higher-functioning autism spectrum disorders.

Despite the skewed sex ratio, few studies have addressed possible cognitive sex differences in autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). This study compared visual attention to detail (ATTD) and selected executive functions (EF) in 35 males and 21 females with higher-functioning ASD and unaffected sibling controls. Females with ASD outperformed males on EF as assessed by the Trail Making Test B-A. Males with ASD showed superior performance for ATTD as measured by the Block Design Test (BD) when compared with females. EF difficulties in males were correlated with more stereotypic behaviours and interes

Body Mass Index Predicts Decline in Executive Function in Bipolar Disorder: Preliminary Data of a 12-Month Follow-up Study.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity and associated risk factors have been linked to cognitive decline before. OBJECTIVES: In the present study, we evaluated potential cumulative negative effects of overweight and obesity on cognitive performance in euthymic patients with bipolar disorder (BD) in a longitudinal design. METHODS: Neurocognitive measures (California Verbal Learning Test, Trail Making Test [TMT] A/B, Digit-Symbol-Test, Digit-Span, d2 Test), anthropometrics (e.g., body mass index [BMI]), and clinical ratings (Hamilton Depression Scale, Young Mania Rating Scale) were collected over a 12-month ob

Just do it! How performing an action enhances remembering in transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a clinical syndrome characterized by the sudden onset of a massive episodic memory deficit that spares other cognitive functions. As such, it provides a unique human amnesia model for testing the enactment effect (i.e., better memory for performed actions than for verbally encoded sentences). Our main aim was to test whether the enactment effect is preserved in TGA patients, both to have a better understanding and to test the robustness of this effect in a massive amnesia. Object-action pairs were encoded under four conditions: verbal, experimenter-performed,

Incidental findings of typical iNPH imaging signs in asymptomatic subjects with subclinical cognitive decline.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) remains unclear. Little is known about the pre-symptomatic stage. This study aimed to investigate the association of neuropsychological data with iNPH-characteristic imaging changes compared to normal imaging and unspecific atrophy in a healthy population. METHODS: We extracted data from the community-dwelling Austrian Stroke Prevention Family Study (ASPS-Fam) database (2006-2010). All subjects underwent a baseline and identical follow-up examination after 3-5 years with MR imaging and an extensive neuropsychological

Neuropsychological profile in young girls at high risk of developing anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has shown anorexia nervosa (AN) to be associated with a specific neuropsychological profile, including set-shifting and central coherence deviances. A similar profile has been shown in adult unaffected relatives. The aim of this study was to examine whether poor set-shifting and central coherence abilities could be detected in children at high risk of developing AN. METHOD: Twenty-eight biological healthy daughters of women with previous or current AN and 42 biological daughters of healthy women, all between six and 12 years of age, participated in the study. The association between obstructive sleep apnea and total cerebral small vessel disease burden-Neurovascular insights of OSA.

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to assess the relationship between the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and the total burden score of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), global cerebral blood flow (CBF), and cognitive function. Moreover, the internal pathway through which OSA induces cognitive impairment by affecting cerebral perfusion, and overall cerebral small vessel lesions was determined in this study. METHODS: In total, 94 patients who received polysomnography (PSG) at the Mental Health Center of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region from October 2024 to February 2026 were inc

Traumatic Brain Injury Exposure Lowers Age of Cognitive Decline in AD and Non-AD Conditions.

We aimed to detect the possible accelerating role of previous traumatic brain injury (TBI) exposures on the onset of later cognitive decline assessed across different brain diseases. We analyzed data from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC), which provide information on history of TBI and longitudinal data on cognitive and non-cognitive domains for each available subject. At the time of this investigation, a total of 609 NACC subjects resulted to have a documented history of TBI. We compared subjects with and without a history of previous TBI (of any type) at the time of their

Regression-Based Normative Data for the Inhibitory Control Test (ICT) and the Switching Test (ST) of the HEllas BAttery of Cognitive Control (HEBACC) in the Greek Adult Population Aged 20-79 Years years old.

The Stroop Color-Word Test and Trail Making Test are widely used neuropsychological measures of executive functioning, assessing cognitive control, attention, processing speed, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility. Although Greek normative data exist, most studies have focused on older adults and have relied on traditional age-stratified methods. Regression-based norms allow more precise demographic adjustment and interpretation across adulthood. This study aimed to develop regression-based normative data for two executive-function measures of the Hellas battery of Cognitive Control: the Inhi

Serum leptin and risk of cognitive decline in elderly italians.

BACKGROUND: US studies suggest that leptin, a fat-derived hormone, may be protective against the development of dementia. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the complex relationship between leptin levels and cognitive decline in elderly Italians. METHODS: We studied circulating fasting leptin levels in 809 elderly adults free from dementia who participated in the prospective Italian population-based InCHIANTI study between 1998 and 2009 (mean follow-up of 8.0 years). Global cognitive decline was defined as a reduction of ≥5 points on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Trail-Making Tests A and

Assessment of the impact of carotid intima-media thickness on postoperative cognitive dysfunction following elective noncardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) following noncardiac surgery in the elderly is a growing concern. This study evaluates the relationship between carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), a measure of subclinical atherosclerosis, and POCD. METHODS: In this prospective study, elderly patients (≥60 years) undergoing elective noncardiac surgery were divided into two groups based on cIMT. Cognitive assessments were conducted preoperatively and postoperatively using the mini-mental state examination, clock-drawing, digit span, trail-making, and Stroop tests. RESULTS: The study i

Trail making task performance in inpatients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

Set-shifting inefficiencies have been consistently identified in adults with anorexia nervosa (AN). It is less clear to what degree similar inefficiencies are present in those with bulimia nervosa (BN). It is also unknown whether perfectionism is related to set-shifting performance. We employed a commonly used set-shifting measure, the Trail Making Test (TMT), to compare the performance of inpatients with AN and BN with a healthy control sample. We also investigated whether perfectionism predicted TMT scores. Only the BN sample showed significantly suboptimal performance, while the AN sample w

Impact of the presence of alcohol at the time of injury on acute and one-year cognitive and functional recovery after traumatic brain injury.

The presence of alcohol is clearly a risk factor for sustaining a traumatic brain injury (TBI); however, the impact of alcohol on injury severity, and functional or cognitive outcome is unclear, as there is mixed evidence in the literature. This study examined 482 participants in a large urban medical center with documented mild-complicated to severe TBI and blood alcohol testing for functional and cognitive outcome. Functional outcomes were measured by the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) and cognitive outcomes were measured using neuropsychological tests known to be sensitive to the seq

Social Cognition and Interaction Training (SCIT) for inpatients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders: preliminary findings.

Individuals with schizophrenia exhibit consistent deficits in social cognition such as emotion perception, attributional style, and theory of mind, which may be targets of psychosocial treatments. Previous intervention studies have typically focused on only one aspect of social cognition and have not assessed generalization of treatment to improvements in social functioning. This paper describes preliminary data from a new group-based treatment, Social Cognition and Interaction Training (SCIT), aimed at improving social cognition in schizophrenia. Eighteen inpatients with schizophrenia spectru

Cognitive brain function in non-demented patients with low-grade and high-grade carotid artery stenosis.

Atherosclerotic stenosis of the carotid arteries decreases cerebral flow volume and perfusion, and may result in brain dysfunction. We studied the relationship between the degree of carotid artery stenosis and cognitive brain function in non-demented patients. Cognitive brain function was assessed in 76 patients with carotid artery stenosis (38 patients with low-grade stenosis of 50% or less, and 38 patients with high-grade stenosis of 75% or more) by recording of cognitive P300 auditory evoked potentials and trailmaking test. Results were compared to 70 age-matched healthy subjects. The P300

Neuromotor and cognitive responses of adults with autism spectrum disorder compared to neurotypical adults.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder, whose core symptom domains include impaired social communication and narrowed interests and/or repetitive behaviors; in addition, deficits of general cognition, neuromotor function, and movement ability can be observed. This study was designed to examine differences in neuromotor and cognitive functions for a group of young adults with ASD and age-matched controls. It was also of interest to assess whether changes in the intra-individual variability (IIV) of these selected neuromotor and cognitive tasks also occurred. Incr
