BACKGROUND: Circulating iron is normally bound to transferrin. Non-transferrin-bound iron (NTBI) has been described in most forms of iron overload, but has not been studied in African dietary iron overload. This abnormal iron fraction is probably toxic, but this has not been demonstrated.
METHODS: High-pressure liquid chromatography was used to assay serum NTBI in 25 black African subjects with iron overload documented by liver biopsy and in 170 relatives and neighbours. Levels of NTBI were correlated with indirect measures of iron status and conventional liver function tests.

The binding and subsequent internalization of 125I-labelled transferrin has been studied in the human choriocarcinoma cell line, JAR. AIMS: Serum levels of carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT, the sum of its asialylated and disialylated glycoforms) are a commercial marker of alcohol abuse. Our aim was to investigate the potential influence of metabolic factors on serum CDT levels and the predictive value of transferrin glycoforms for the development of type 2 diabetes in a general adult population.

BACKGROUND: In transfusional siderosis, the iron binding capacity of plasma transferrin is often surpassed, with concomitant generation of non-transferrin-bound iron. Although implicated in tissue siderosis, non-transferrin-bound iron modes of cell ingress remain undefined, largely because of its variable composition and association with macromolecules. OBJECTIVE: Detection of beta-2 transferrin in rhinorrhea fluid is a sensitive and specific method for the diagnosis of a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak. Patients may be asked to collect this fluid at home to obtain an adequate volume for detection, and thus the age and storage conditions of these specimens may be variable upon analysis. The purpose of this study is to understand how age, storage temperature, and exposure to mucus affect the ability to detect beta-2 transferrin in CSF.

The original signature of the transferrin (TF) family of proteins was the ability to bind ferric iron with high affinity in the cleft of each of two homologous lobes. However, in recent years, new family members that do not bind iron have been discovered. One new member is the inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase (ICA), which as its name indicates, binds to and strongly inhibits certain isoforms of carbonic anhydrase.
