This study aimed at the identification of acute and post-traumatic stress responses, and comorbid mental disorders in breast cancer patients. Structured clinical interviews for DSM-IV (SCID) were conducted post-surgery with 127 patients (t1). Screening measures were used to assess post-traumatic stress responses, anxiety, and depression at t1 and at 6 months follow-up (t2). Based on the SCID, prevalence rates were 2.4% for both, cancer-related ASD and PTSD. Experiences most frequently described as traumatic were the cancer diagnosis itself and subsequent feelings of uncertainty. Patients with

Background: Many pregnant and postpartum Veterans have experienced multiple lifetime traumas, including military sexual trauma, intimate partner violence, and combat trauma. These women may be particularly vulnerable to increased post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health problems following additional trauma exposures or stressful events, such as Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study sought to examine the impact of prior trauma exposures on the lived experience of pregnant and postpartum Veterans during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: Pregnant Veterans at 15

As cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) continue to rise, psychological endurance is a challenge many people will face. For mental health, heightened stress responses to the pandemic, is likely to manifest in three ways: 1) development of a new episode of a disorder in those with a predisposition to a major psychiatric disorder or an acute exacerbation in those who already have such a disorder, 2) development of a trauma or stressor related disorder, such as acute stress disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), or adjustment disorders, and 3) development of a symptomatic stress

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a trauma and stressor related psychiatric disorder associated with structural, metabolic, and molecular alternations in several brain regions including diverse cortical areas, neuroendocrine regions, the striatum, dopaminergic, adrenergic and serotonergic pathways, and the limbic system. We are in critical need of novel therapeutics and biomarkers for PTSD and a deep understanding of cutting edge imaging and spectroscopy methods is necessary for the development of promising new approaches to better diagnose and treat the disorder. According to the Diagno

BACKGROUND: Racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities persist in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which are partly attributed to minoritized women being trauma-exposed, while also contending with harmful contextual stressors. However, few have used analytic strategies that capture the interplay of these experiences and their relation to PTSD. The current study used a person-centered statistical approach to examine heterogeneity in trauma and contextual stress exposure, and their associations with PTSD and underlying symptom dimensions, in a diverse sample of low-income postpartum wome

Place- and culture-associated psychiatric syndromes describe acute psychiatric presentations precipitated by emotionally and spiritually intense experiences in culturally significant settings. We report the case of a 59-year-old widowed Tajik woman with no prior psychiatric history who developed an acute manic episode with psychotic features during her first Umrah pilgrimage to Makkah. The episode was preceded by approximately five days of prodromal decreased sleep, irritability, and repetitive ritualistic behaviors, progressing to elevated and labile mood, pressured speech, flight of ideas, s

Although experiencing bullying and other forms of assault is associated with adverse physical, emotional, and psychological consequences, the long-term consequences, especially in the aftermath of a severe trauma in adulthood, is not known. This study examined the relationship between history of being bullied and/or assaulted and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms among responders to the World Trade Center (WTC) disaster. During 2015-16, a modified life events checklist was administered to responders at Stony Brook WTC Health Program. WTC-related PTSD symptoms were assessed by PTSD

BACKGROUND: In chronic sexual abuse victims with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis can be dysregulated. In single rape victims, PTSD symptoms are hypothesized to function as a chronic stressor leading to similar HPA-axis dysregulation. The objective of the current study was to assess HPA-axis functioning in female adolescents with rape-related PTSD, but no prior sexual trauma, in comparison to non-victimized controls.
METHOD: Salivary cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) were measured in 52 female adolescent rape victims with P

IMPORTANCE: Children living in poverty are at increased risk of mental health and neurodevelopmental disorders. Little is known about the trends in diagnoses of these disorders among children enrolled in public insurance programs, such as Medicaid, which insure more than 1 in 3 US children.
OBJECTIVE: To provide comprehensive, multistate estimates of changes in the percentage of publicly insured children with mental health and/or neurodevelopmental disorder diagnoses.

Perinatal psychiatry has gained increasing attention as a public health priority, given the high prevalence and burden of mental health conditions during pregnancy and the postpartum period. While research has predominantly focused on depressive disorders, growing evidence suggests that a broader range of psychiatric conditions may significantly influence obstetric and neonatal outcomes. Unlike previous works primarily centered on perinatal depression, this narrative review provides an integrated and transdiagnostic overview of perinatal psychiatric disorders - including mood, anxiety, psychot

Racial discrimination functions as a chronic psychosocial stressor that underlies racial trauma and elevates risk for mental disorders among racialized individuals. Emerging neuroimaging research has identified associations between experiences of racial discrimination and alterations in brain structure and function. However, the limited number of studies among racialized individuals constitutes a major gap in the scientific literature, leading to critical deficiencies in scientific knowledge, clinical practice, and informed public health strategies. This narrative review synthesizes findings f

OBJECTIVES: Following the presence of both post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and post-concussion syndrome (PCS) in the nosography since the publication of DSM-IV, large-scale studies investigated the links between these two entities: exposure to a mild traumatic brain injury was correlated with the presence of PTSD and vice versa, and the strongest factor associated with PCS was the presence of PTSD. But PCS entity was recently suppressed from the 5th edition of the American diagnostic and statistical classification of neuropsychiatric disorders (DSM-5, 2013). In the 11th edition of the CI

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a trauma- and stressor-related disorder, characterized by bi-directional symptomatic manifestations of increase in both hyperarousal/hypervigilance and numbing/avoidance. In our previous reports, we have proposed an animal model of PTSD using avoidance/escape task sessions in the shuttle box after delivering an inescapable foot-shock traumatization in the same box (Wakizono et al., 2007), and demonstrated the efficacy of 2-week administration of antidepressant on the hyperarousal/hypervigilant behavioral parameters (Sawamura et al., 2004) in the model.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a trauma- and stressor-related disorder characterized by re-experiencing, avoidance of trauma-related stimuli, negative changes in mood and cognition, and hyperarousal. Despite its prevalence, the pathogenesis and molecular mechanisms underlying PTSD remain poorly understood. In the present study, a mouse model simulating PTSD was established through a modified single prolonged stress (SPS) in conjunction with plantar shock (SPS+shock). Contextual fear-like and active avoidance behaviors were assessed using the contextual freezing test and the cue avoid

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a relatively new psychiatric disorder with three clusters of symptoms: trauma re-experiencing, avoidance, and increased arousal. The condition develops after a person sees, is involved in, or hears of an extreme traumatic stressor such as war, torture, natural catastrophe, assault, rape, or serious accident. PTSD is also often comorbid with other psychiatric disorders, especially with alcohol dependence. Several hormonal alterations have been reported in veterans with combat-related PTSD, including elevations in certain thyroid hormones, e.g

BACKGROUND: Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is known to comprise two distinct but connected phenotypes related to 'grandiosity' and 'vulnerability', respectively. While evidence suggests differing countertransference responses to narcissism subtype expression, no study has examined this using a qualitative methodology and explored associations with ratings of personality disorder severity.
METHOD: Mental health clinicians (N = 180, 67% female, age = 38.9), completed qualitative clinical reflections and ratings of overall personality disorder severity towards two hypothetical vignettes
