Dengue fever, tuberculosis, human immunodeficiency virus, and hepatitis C virus conversion in a group of long-term development aid workers.

BACKGROUND: Development and humanitarian aid workers are a diverse group of travelers who, because of the nature of their travel, may have specific travel-related health risks. The main objective of this study was to quantify the risk of dengue fever virus (DFV), tuberculosis (TB), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections in a group of long-term development aid volunteers. METHODS: Medical files of Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) volunteers and their accompanying family/partner/spouse serving over 17 years (1995-2011) were reviewed. Demographics, destination,

Combined electronic medical records and gene polymorphism characteristics to establish an anti-tuberculosis drug-induced hepatic injury (ATDH) prediction model and evaluate the prediction value.

BACKGROUND: Anti-tuberculosis drug-induced hepatic injury (ATDH) lacks specific diagnostic markers. The characteristics of gene polymorphisms have been preliminarily used for the risk classification of ATDH, and the activation of Pregnane X receptor/aminole-vulinic synthase-1/forkhead box O1 (PXR/ALAS1/FOXO1) axis is closely related to ATDH. Therefore, we consider combining general clinical features of the electronic medical record, laboratory indications, and genetic features of key genes in this axis for predictive model construction to help early clinical diagnosis and treatment. METHODS:

A case of multiple macronodular hepatic tuberculosis difficult to differentiate from hepatocellular carcinoma with intrahepatic metastasis: CT-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy confirmed the diagnosis.

Multiple macronodular hepatic tuberculosis is difficult to be differentiated from hepatocellular carcinoma with intrahepatic metastasis in clinical practice, especially when hepatitis B with or without liver cirrhosis coexists with it. Herein, we report a 30-year-old man with a 10-year history of hepatitis B and a family medical history of hepatocellular carcinoma related with hepatitis B that was finally diagnosed as multiple macronodular hepatic tuberculosis. Abdominal B-mode ultrasonography (US) and plain computed tomography (CT) revealed multiple unequal-sized nodules in the liver. CT-guid

Triple infection with pulmonary tuberculosis, chronic hepatitis C and systemic brucellosis in an HIV/AIDS patient: a case report from northwestern China.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Profound immune suppression in people living with HIV/AIDS predisposes to multiple opportunistic and endemic infections. While HIV/tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfections are well recognized, simultaneous infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, HCV, and Brucella spp. is exceptionally rare. Such triple infection poses substantial diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, especially in endemic settings where overlapping febrile syndromes may obscure multiple concurrent etiologies. We describe a complex case of HIV/TB/HCV/brucellosis coinfection f

Immunological Enigma: A Case Report of COVID-19 Survival in a Patient With Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Hepatitis C Virus, and Tuberculosis Co-infection.

This case report aims to elucidate the unique clinical course of a 34-year-old male patient diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), chronic hepatitis C, and prior tuberculosis (TB) infections, who subsequently contracted COVID-19. Immunological assessments revealed profound immunosuppression, marked by decreased CD4+ T cells (0.037 x 10⁹/L), alongside mildly elevated IgG levels (16.701 g/L), reflecting both HIV-related immunodeficiency and non-adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Concurrently, the patient tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. Imaging findings demonstrated overlappin

Screening Practices and Risk Factors for Co-Infection with Latent Tuberculosis and Hepatitis B Virus in an Integrated Healthcare System - California, 2008-2019.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and latent tuberculosis infection are associated with a significant global burden, but both are underdiagnosed and undertreated. We described the screening patterns and risk factors for co-infection with latent tuberculosis and HBV within a large healthcare system. METHODS: Using data from Kaiser Permanente Southern California during 2008-2019, we described HBV infections, defined as a positive HBV surface antigen, e-antigen, or DNA test, and latent tuberculosis, defined as a positive Mantoux tuberculin skin test or interferon-gamma release assay test. We e

Prevalence of hepatitis C virus and human immunodeficiency virus in a group of patients newly diagnosed with active tuberculosis in Porto Alegre, Southern Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Porto Alegre is the Brazilian state capital with second highest incidence of tuberculosis (TB) and the highest proportion of people infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among patients with TB. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection increases the risk of anti-TB drug-induced hepatotoxicity, which may result in discontinuation of the therapy. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was (i) to estimate prevalence of HCV and HIV in a group of patients newly diagnosed with active TB in a public reference hospital in Porto Alegre and (ii) to compare demographic, behavioural, and clinic

The perfect storm: incarceration and the high-risk environment perpetuating transmission of HIV, hepatitis C virus, and tuberculosis in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

Despite global reductions in HIV incidence and mortality, the 15 UNAIDS-designated countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) that gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 constitute the only region where both continue to rise. HIV transmission in EECA is fuelled primarily by injection of opioids, with harsh criminalisation of drug use that has resulted in extraordinarily high levels of incarceration. Consequently, people who inject drugs, including those with HIV, hepatitis C virus, and tuberculosis, are concentrated within prisons. Evidence-based primary and secondary preve

RiskRadar: development and pilot results of a technical intervention targeting combination prevention regarding HIV, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections and tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: The HIV pandemic impacts the lives of millions and despite the global coordinated response, innovative actions are still needed to end it. A major challenge is the added burden of coinfections such as viral hepatitis, tuberculosis and various sexually transmitted infections in terms of prevention, treatment and increased morbidity in individuals with HIV infection. A need for combination prevention strategies, tailored to high-risk key populations arises and technology-based interventions can be a valuable asset. The COVID-19 pandemic challenged the delivery of existing services an

Protection against tuberculosis by vaccination of secreted chorismate mutase (Rv1885c) combined with a hepatitis B virus (HBV)-derived peptide, Poly6, and alum adjuvants.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health issue due to the limited efficacy of the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, highlighting the need for the development of an improved TB vaccine. In this study, we created a novel TB subunit vaccine consisting of TB-secreted chorismate mutase (TBCM) (Rv1885c) and a hepatitis B virus (HBV)-derived peptide (Poly6), which elicits Type I interferon responses, both with and without an alum adjuvant. We evaluated the immunogenicity, protective efficacy, and therapeutic efficacy of this vaccine candidate in an in vivo mouse model. Our results

Global coverage of interventions for reduction of injecting drug use-related harm, HIV, viral hepatitis and tuberculosis in prisons and other carceral settings: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: People who are incarcerated experience disproportionately high rates of injecting drug use and infectious disease, including HIV, viral hepatitis and tuberculosis. However, comprehensive global data regarding the availability of services that prevent and manage infectious disease, injecting drug use and related harms remain limited and outdated. We provide the first systematic review to comprehensively examine the availability and coverage of infectious disease prevention, treatment, and harm reduction services for incarcerated populations globally. METHODS: We conducted a systema

Strengthening Prevention and Treatment of HIV, Viral Hepatitis, Sexually Transmitted Infections, and Tuberculosis Among Women Who Are Justice System-Involved: CDC Recommendations and Resources.

Women who are currently or formerly incarcerated experience disproportionately high rates of certain infections and diseases, including HIV, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and tuberculosis (TB). These disparities are shaped by overlapping social and structural conditions such as substance use, trauma, poverty, and limited access to health care. Incarceration can be a critical point of intervention to provide health care access for women who otherwise might not be able to prioritize their own health. However, the effectiveness of these efforts is often limited by varia

High prevalence of co-infections with latent tuberculosis, syphilis and hepatitis B and C among people with HIV in Ghana: a call for integrating screening into routine care.

BACKGROUND: People with HIV (PWH) are at risk of co-infections, such as latent tuberculosis (LTBI), hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), and syphilis; hence, routine screening is critical. However, evaluation of routine screening is not being fully implemented in Ghana. This study assessed the prevalence of these co-infections among PWH in Accra, Ghana. METHODS: The HIV Cure Research Infrastructure Study (H-CRIS) followed 390 PWH from three HIV treatment centres in Accra. A cross-sectional study was conducted within this cohort, and participants were screened for LTBI, hepatitis B, hepatitis

Secondary spontaneous pneumothorax due to extensive pulmonary tuberculosis in a patient with acute hepatitis B flare: clinical challenges and therapeutic decision making-a case report.

Secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP), particularly when complicated by a persistent air leak, is an uncommon but serious manifestation of active pulmonary tuberculosis. Such cases often require pleural drainage or surgical intervention. Management becomes significantly more challenging when patients present with extensive pulmonary disease, compromised general condition, and severe comorbidities. We describe a 28-year-old male with bilateral extensive pulmonary tuberculosis, persistent right-sided pneumothorax, and a severe acute flare of chronic hepatitis B. Conventional management, inclu
