Jigger infestation in children in a rural area of Rivers State of Nigeria.

During a survey in April 1991 to determine the immunisation status of 218 children resident in a rural riverine community, 49 (22.48) were found to have been infested with Tunga penetrans. Itching and ulceration were the commonest symptoms. The feet were infested in all children, none of whom was taken to a health facility. 42.86% of infested children received complete doses of DPT. Parents reported no complications of infestation. Tungiasis is an important infestation in rural dwellers. The need for adequate childhood immunisation and use of protective clothing and shoes are highlighted.

[Description of Tunga bonneti n. sp. from Chile (Siphonaptera: Tungidae) with notes on specificity, chorology, dermecos and phenology].

Smit (1968) misreported Tunga libis from Chile. Here we describe this flea as a new species. We analyzed free life females, male and embedded females. Moreover, we include data about its natural history and biology. These data will allow a better understanding about other Tunga fleas, and particularly for collecting males, which remain unknown to date.

[Observations of the sand flea (Tunga penetrans) in humans and dogs in French Guiana].

The occurrence of sand fleas (Tunga penetrans) in a reservation in the north of French Guyana is described. The parasite is found on dogs, Europeans and children of the local Indian tribes. Infections in man are supported by a big population of stray dogs as well as by the local cottage construction. Due to the simultaneous efficiency against the larvae of Dermatobia hominis lvermectin is only of limited suitability for the treatment of tungiasis in dogs. In man single parasites can be removed with a splinter forceps. In dogs footbathing with 0.2% Neguvon has shown to be effective. On long ter

Travelers' tropical skin diseases: Challenges and interventions.

Tropical regions receive a significant part of the traveling population. It is very important that health professionals are familiar with the main tropical skin diseases and able to advice patients appropriately. This article reviews the main tropical diseases of travelers, with an emphasis on diagnosis, management, and prevention. Among others, cutaneous larva migrans, myiasis, tungiasis, Chagas disease, Dengue fever, African trypanosomiasis, filariasis, and leishmaniasis are discussed. Increasing awareness among travelers and health care professionals can help reduce morbidity and mortality.

Ectoparasitic infestations in homeless children.

Most human ectoparasites live on the surface of their host and depend on that host to complete their life cycle. The most common ectoparasitic infestations of medical importance in humans include pediculosis, scabies, myiasis, and tungiasis. Different host factors are related, with increased risk of acquiring ectoparasitic infestation occurring among the homeless. Although these ectoparasitic infections can be found worldwide, their prevalence is affected significantly by environmental conditions in different geographical areas. This review focuses on the epidemiology, clinical presentation, d

Dermatologic Infectious Diseases in International Travelers.

Skin lesions provide an important clue to the diagnoses of many infections in returned travelers. New information related to epidemiology, recognition, diagnosis, or management is described for the systemic infections--dengue fever, several of the rickettsial infections, African trypanosomiasis, and coccidioidomycosis. Many pathogens cause focal skin findings. Recent findings are presented for cutaneous leishmaniasis, Buruli ulcer, gnatho-stomiasis, cutaneous larva migrans, myiasis, tungiasis, and scabies. This paper describes the most common skin problems in returning travelers and outlines t

The parasitic diseases of school children in Lagos State, Nigeria.

A survey of 5,595 primary school children in Lagos State showed that most of the children were over-loaded with parasitic infestations which included malaria (37.7%), schistosomiasis (13.4%). ascariasis (74.2%), trichuriasis (75.8%), hookworm (29.5%) and tungiasis (49.5%). Multiple infections were observed with about 16.2% harbouring all the causative organisms of the parasitic diseases enumerated above. The high prevalence of parasitic infestations among these children is an index of the community's low level of health and also of inadequate health education, because most of these diseases ar

[Ectoparasitic diseases].

Skin disorders are among the three most frequent health problems among returning travellers. Although ectoparasitic diseases are only a fraction of all skin problems, suspected lesions are often a reason to consult the GP after returning from low economy countries. Scabies presents in a variety of clinically different lesions and is a challenge to the physician, as are the residues of arthropode bites. A focused history and a careful clinical investigation is mandatory. Allergic reactions mirror the variety of individual modulation of immunological processes of ectoparasitic disorders. Further

Emerging imported parasitoses in Italy.

In the period 1987-2001, 111 cases of imported parasitoses were diag- nosed in three Italian dermatology departments (Monza, Milan and Siena): 22 cases of tungiasis, 11 of furuncular myiasis and 78 of creeping eruption. The patients were 73 males and 38 women, who had been on trips abroad. All underwent appropriate treatment and recovered. Here we describe the geographic location of the parasites, the clinical features of the skin manifestations and differential diagnoses. Autochthonous cases of these infections, which are increasingly frequent as Europeans travel to endemic areas, have been d

[Skin diseases in returning travelers: etiologies according to clinical presentation].

Dermatoses are one of the three most common causes of health problem in returning travelers. These dermatoses include infections, environmental diseases (sunburns, arthropod-related reactions) and superficial injuries. Skin infections are the most common cause of consultation after return. They include bacterial infections of cosmopolitan origin (pyoderma, abcess, cellulites) and tropical diseases (hookworm-related cutaneous cutaneous larva migrans, localized cutaneous leishmaniasis, tungiasis, myiasis...). Travelers abroad must be appropriately vaccinated against tetanus and specifically inst

Got the Travel Bug? A Review of Common Infections, Infestations, Bites, and Stings Among Returning Travelers.

The popularity of international travel continues to increase among Americans, even though they often experience subsequent illness on return from their journey. The pathogens responsible are not necessarily endemic to the destination itself but are often the result of poor sanitary conditions or activities engaged in while away. Skin disease ranks third among all medical concerns in returning travelers. This review addresses the pathogenesis, epidemiology, clinical presentation, and treatment of the most common skin diseases in returning travelers: insect bites and bedbugs, cutaneous larva mig

[Management of skin lesions in returning travelers].

Dermatoses in returning travellers are common. These dermatoses are mainly infectious, the most common being bacterial infections of cosmopolitan origin (cellulitis, pyoderma and abcess). Others dermatoses are environmental diseases such as sunburns, arthropod-related reactions and superficial injuries. The most common tropical skin disease is hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans but treating physicians may also face patients with localized cutaneous leishmaniasis, tungiasis, or myiasis. Also some systemic infections can be associated with skin manifestations. The most useful treatments in

Notes on the genus Tunga (Siphonaptera: Tungidae) II--neosomes, morphology, classification, and other taxonomic notes.

This review focuses on the neosomes, morphology, and taxonomy of adult species of the genus Tunga, complementing the previously published data on the phylogeny, ecology, and pathogenic role. Neosomes are structures formed after penetration of adult females into the skin of hosts resulting in significant enlargement, being the most characteristic and most frequently observed form in hosts. Neosomes can be differentiated by shape, measurements, and sites of attachment to principal hosts. The taxonomic value and morphometric data of the most widely used characteristics to separate species - such

Infestation of Tunga penetrans in villages near Zomba Central Hospital.

An outbreak of Tunga Penetrans (Jigger Flea) infestation affecting a number of villages near to a Central Hospital in Malawi is described. Due to the large number of affected individuals, high parasitic load, and extended duration of infection an alternative to the recommended approach of surgical removal of the flea was required. Benzyl benzoate paint and liquid paraffin had been used in local Primary Healthcare settings previously and topical treatment with antiparasitic agents has been advocated in the literature, particularly for severe infestation. Benzyl benzoate and liquid paraffin were

Establishment of Tunga trimamillata (Siphonaptera: Tungidae) in Brazil.

Tunga trimamillata is a species of sand flea occurring in Ecuador and Peru parasitizing cattle, goat, sheep, swine, and man. This is the first report of this species in Brazil, having been found on the hooves of cows in Barretos, São Paulo State, and Felixlândia, Minas Gerais State, and previously misidentified as Tunga penetrans. A previous report concerning Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris from Rio Novo, Minas Gerais State, may also be attributed to that species of sand flea, a possible the primary host. Given the large geographical distribution of T. trimamillata, the vast cattle population in Bra
