Estimating prevalence of genital warts in Turkey: survey among KETEM-affiliated gynecologists across Turkey.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In order to develop cost effective health strategies regarding HPV screening and prevention methods, determining the incidence and prevalence of HPV as well as the diseases it gives rise to such as cervical cancer and genital warts is essential. This study is a first step in determining nationwide annual prevalence of genital warts in Turkey. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Through the survey sent to gynecologists in each city in Turkey, a record number of data for 4,013,084 patients, out of which 5511 diagnosed with genital warts were collected from 81 cities. The survey was se

Risk Factors and Coinfection Dynamics of Pathogens in Wild Turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) From Pennsylvania, USA.

Interactions between co-occurring pathogens can have complex and significant impacts on host survival, fitness, and population dynamics. While common in wildlife, coinfections are often overlooked, and research may create biased management perspectives when individual pathogens are assessed in isolation. Recent work has found that wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) are affected by various pathogens, but it is unknown how infections and coinfections are spatially structured or interact with each other. Here, we determined the associations and risk factors of infection by lymphoproliferative dis

Experimental model for the reproduction of necrotic enteritis in turkeys using different Clostridium perfringens strains.

Necrotic enteritis (NE) is a disease affecting poultry caused by virulence factors, primarily toxins, produced by Clostridium perfringens (Cp). Although NE is well documented in turkey flocks, only one study describes its pathogenesis suggesting a protocol for the induction of the disease. The aim of this study was to set up a challenge model for the experimental reproduction of NE in turkeys, in line with clinical signs currently observed in the field. To this purpose, the disease was induced based on the administration of some well-known predisposing factors for chicken (sudden switch to a h

Early post-hatching effects of antibiotics and ionophore coccidiostat supplementation on immune parameters in turkeys.

Numerous factors can disrupt the development and function of the turkey immune system. The post-hatching period is critical because poults are exposed to various substances, microorganisms, and vaccines when their immune system is immature. The aim of this experiment was to determine whether the administration of antimicrobials to young turkeys affects their immune responses. The experiment was designed two-factorially, with four treatments - C (untreated control), M, E, and D -and two vaccination schedules - vaccinated (+) and unvaccinated (-). Groups M+ and M- received the coccidiostat monen

A scoping review of factors potentially linked with antimicrobial-resistant bacteria from turkeys (iAM.AMR Project).

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a complex problem that is a threat to global public health. Consumption of turkey meat may be an important source of foodborne exposure to resistant bacteria; recent outbreaks of multi-drug-resistant Salmonella Reading in Canada and the USA have implicated raw turkey products. To better understand the epidemiology of AMR in farmed turkey production, a scoping review was conducted. The objectives were to identify (1) modifiable factors potentially associated with antimicrobial-resistant Campylobacter, Enterococcus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica along

Differential Transcriptome Responses to Aflatoxin B₁ in the Cecal Tonsil of Susceptible and Resistant Turkeys.

The nearly-ubiquitous food and feed-borne mycotoxin aflatoxin B₁ (AFB₁) is carcinogenic and mutagenic, posing a food safety threat to humans and animals. One of the most susceptible animal species known and thus a good model for characterizing toxicological pathways, is the domesticated turkey (DT), a condition likely due, at least in part, to deficient hepatic AFB₁-detoxifying alpha-class glutathione S-transferases (GSTAs). Conversely, wild turkeys (Eastern wild, EW) are relatively resistant to the hepatotoxic, hepatocarcinogenic and immunosuppressive effects of AFB₁ owing to functional gene

Amino acid pattern in the liver and blood of fattening turkeys suffering from hepatic lipidosis.

Hepatic lipidosis (HL) is a well-known disease in fattening and in parent turkey flocks. Among others, dietary effects like (a lack of) essential amino acids (AA) as lipotrophic factors (e.g., methionine) have been considered as potentially predispositing for HL. Several studies have reported abnormal AA profiles in hepatic diseases of humans and other livestock. The ratio of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) to aromatic amino acids (AAA) in plasma is used to predict hepatic cirrhosis. In this study, the state of supply of AA was investigated by comparing non-affected (NA) animals and those af

Changes in the intestinal mucosal proteome of turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) infected with haemorrhagic enteritis virus.

Haemorrhagic enteritis (HE) is a viral disease affecting intestinal integrity and barrier function in turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) and resulting in a significant economic loss. Sequential Windowed Acquisition of All Theoretical Fragment Ion Mass Spectra (SWATH-MS) was applied to identify crucial proteins involved in HE infection. A total of 938 proteins were identified and used to generate a reference library for SWATH-MS analysis. In total, 523 proteins were reliably quantified, and 64 proteins were found to be differentially expressed, including 49 up-regulated and 15 down-regulated proteins

Evaluation of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) ts-304 vaccine as a live attenuated vaccine in turkeys.

Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) is an important pathogen of poultry worldwide that causes chronic respiratory disease (CRD) in chickens and infectious sinusitis in turkeys. Vaxsafe MG (strain ts-11) is a live attenuated temperature sensitive vaccine that has been proven to be effective in controlling CRD in chickens, but it is not efficacious in turkeys. The gapA gene, which encodes a mature cytadhesin protein with a molecular weight of approximately 105 kDa, is not expressed in strain ts-11 because a 20 base pair reiterated sequence introduces a frame shift and causes premature truncation of th

Metronidazole pharmacokinetics during rapid growth in turkeys - relation to changes in haemodynamics and drug metabolism.

Whereas interspecies variation in pharmacokinetics is a commonly investigated issue, variations in drug kinetics within a species are less documented. The aim of the study was to assess the influence of age-related changes in haemodynamics on the pharmacokinetics of metronidazole (MTZ) and its hydroxy metabolite (MTZ-OH) in turkeys. MTZ was administered intravenously and orally at a dose of 25 mg/kg. Plasma drug and metabolite concentrations were assessed by high-performance liquid chromatography, and pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated by noncompartmental analysis. Haemodynamic paramet

Isolation and characterization of Ochrobactrum anthropi and Ochrobactrum pecoris from caecal content of commercial turkeys.

Two Gram negative, micro-aerophilic, non-motile and non-spore-forming coccoid bacteria were isolated from female turkey caecal samples collected from a slaughterhouse. The biochemical reaction profiles (API 20 E and API 20 NE) typed both strains as Ochrobactrum anthropi. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene and recA gene sequence similarities the strains were identified as O. anthropi and Ochrobactrum pecoris, respectively. Both strains were highly resistant against beta-lactam antibiotics, chloramphenicol and sulphonamides but variable in susceptibility to ciprofloxacin, gentamicin and tetracycline.
