Causes of mortality in green turtles from Hawaii and the insular Pacific exclusive of fibropapillomatosis.

Fibropapillomatosis (FP) comprises a majority of green turtle stranding in Hawaii; however, green turtles in the Pacific are also susceptible to non-FP related causes of death. We present here necropsy findings from 230 free-ranging green turtles originating from Hawaii, the Mariana archipelago, Palmyra Atoll, American Samoa, and Johnston Atoll that died from non-FP related causes. Most turtles died from fishing-induced or boat strike trauma followed by infectious/inflammatory diseases, nutritional problems (mainly cachexia), and an array of physiologic problems. Infectious/inflammatory proble

Multistate outbreak of human Salmonella infections associated with exposure to turtles--United States, 2007-2008.

Turtles and other reptiles have long been recognized as a source of human Salmonella infections. To prevent turtle-associated Salmonella infections in humans, the sale and distribution of small turtles (i.e., those with a carapace length of less than 4 inches) has been prohibited in the United States since 1975. Despite this prohibition, small turtles remain available to the public from various sources, including pet shops, flea markets, street vendors, and Internet websites. In October 2007, the North Carolina Division of Public Health (NCDPH) notified CDC of human infections caused by Salmon

Surgical approach to the coelomic cavity through the axillary and inguinal regions in sea turtles.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a surgical approach to the coelomic cavity through the axillary and inguinal regions in sea turtles. DESIGN: Descriptive report. ANIMALS: 9 loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) that had ingested fishhooks or monofilament fishing line. PROCEDURE: Turtles known to have ingested foreign bodies were anesthetized. For the extraction of fish-hooks located in the stomach, an approach to the coelomic cavity through the soft tissues of the left axillary region (along the cranial margin of the plastron) was made. For the removal of fishhooks and long fishing lines in other

Trichinella papuae and Trichinella zimbabwensis induce infection in experimentally infected varans, caimans, pythons and turtles.

The discovery of Trichinella zimbabwensis in farm crocodiles of Zimbabwe has opened up a new frontier in the epidemiology of the Trichinella genus. The objective of the present study was to investigate the infectivity of encapsulated species (T. spiralis, T. nativa, T. britovi, T. murrelli and T. nelsoni) and non-encapsulated species (T. pseudospiralis, T. papuae and T. zimbabwensis) in caimans (Caiman crocodilus), varans (Varanus exanthematicus), pythons (Python molurus bivittatus) and turtles (Pelomedusa subrufa) raised at their natural temperature range (26-32 degrees C). Gonadotropin-releasing hormone from brains of reptiles: turtles (Pseudemys scripta) and snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis).

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-like peptides were present in whole brain extracts of turtle (Pseudemys scripta) and snake (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) with higher content and concentration in the turtle brain. The peptides were identified by cross-reactivity profiles with four GnRH antisera and by retention times on reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) compared with synthetic GnRH standards. Turtle brain extracts contained two HPLC peaks that cross-reacted with GnRH antisera; these peaks eluted from the HPLC in the same positions as chicken I and II GnRH. Snake b

Underestimated microplastics in sea turtles: Implications of a 200 μm detection limit for ingestion monitoring.

Marine litter, particularly plastic pollution, poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems. Sea turtles are especially vulnerable to plastic ingestion due to their feeding behaviour and migratory patterns, making them valuable bioindicators of marine plastic pollution. This study aimed to introduce a methodological improvement by reducing the minimum particle size analysed from 1 to 0.20 mm, and to quantify and characterize plastics found in the digestive tracts of sea turtles. We report a high incidence of plastic ingestion in nearly every turtle examined (n = 39; frequency of occurrence

Sex is determined by XX/XY sex chromosomes in Australasian side-necked turtles (Testudines: Chelidae).

Turtles demonstrate variability in sex determination and, hence, constitute an excellent model for the evolution of sex chromosomes. Notably, the sex determination of the freshwater turtles from the family Chelidae, a species-rich group with wide geographical distribution in the southern hemisphere, is still poorly explored. Here we documented the presence of an XX/XY sex determination system in seven species of the Australasian chelid genera Chelodina, Emydura, and Elseya by conventional (karyogram reconstruction, C-banding) and molecular cytogenetic methods (comparative genome hybridization,

Ultrasound examination of coelomic viscera through the plastron in stranded green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas).

Many projects have been developed in the last years for the conservation of sea turtles. Young green turtles (Chelonia mydas) often nest on the Brazilian coast. Because they nest in beaches along the coastline and islands, green turtles are susceptible to fishing and accidental ingestion of anthropogenic debris. Early detection of ingested debris is crucial for the survival of rescued sea animals. Ultrasound (US) has emerged as a viable imaging technique for visceral examination in veterinary medicine. Previous studies have suggested the left and right cervicobrachial, axillary, pre- and post-

Pharmacokinetics of ketorolac in wild Eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina) after single intramuscular administration.

Ketorolac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that possesses potent analgesic activity comparable to morphine. The opioid shortage in the United States has led to an unreliable supply of opioids for use in rehabilitation facilities, thus underscoring the need for research on the safe and effective use of nonopioid alternatives. The goal of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetics of ketorolac after a single 0.25 mg/kg intramuscular injection administered to injured Eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina). A sparse blood sampling protocol was used to collect samples from

Incidental catch of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) along the Sicilian coasts by longline fishery.

Somatostatin (SM), a peptide inhibiting the release of GH, is present and plays an inhibitory role in the regulation of several organ systems in men and other species. Various SM analogs (SM-As) have been developed and used in clinical practice because the short half-life of SM makes it unsuitable for routine treatment. Recently it has been shown that SM-As might be of therapeutic value in the treatment of active thyroid ophthalmopathy. So far, 61 patients have been treated with octreotide and the results have been published in the literature. It was found that in 41 patients the drug had a be

Thermal biology of eastern box turtles in a longleaf pine system managed with prescribed fire.

Fire can influence the microclimate of forest habitats by removing understory vegetation and surface debris. Temperature is often higher in recently burned forests owing to increased light penetration through the open understory. Because physiological processes are sensitive to temperature in ectotherms, we expected fire-maintained forests to improve the suitability of the thermal environment for turtles, and for turtles to seasonally associate with the most thermally-optimal habitats. Using a laboratory thermal gradient, we determined the thermal preference range (Tset) of eastern box turtles

Case descriptions of fibropapillomatosis in rehabilitating loggerhead sea turtles Caretta caretta in the southeastern USA.

Fibropapillomatosis (FP) is a debilitating neoplastic disease that affects all species of hard-shelled sea turtles, including loggerhead turtles Caretta caretta. FP can represent an important clinical concern in rehabilitating turtles, since managing these infectious lesions often requires special husbandry provisions including quarantine, and FP may affect clinical progression, extend rehabilitation duration, and complicate prognoses. Here we describe cases of rehabilitating loggerhead turtles with FP (designated FP+). Medical records of FP+ loggerhead cases from 3 sea turtle rehabilitation f

Ranavirus infection of free-ranging and captive box turtles and tortoises in the United States.

Iridoviruses of the genus Ranavirus are well known for causing mass mortality events of fish and amphibians with sporadic reports of infection in reptiles. This article describes five instances of Ranavirus infection in chelonians between 2003 and 2005 in Georgia, Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania, USA. Affected species included captive Burmese star tortoises (Geochelone platynota), a free-ranging gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus), free-ranging eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina), and a Florida box turtle (Terrepene carolina bauri). Evidence for Ranavirus infection was also

Seasonal variation in reproductive steroids of male and female yellow-blotched map turtles, Graptemys flavimaculata.

From April to October of 1996 and 1997, we measured seasonal changes in plasma testosterone (T) in male and plasma T and estradiol-17beta (E(2)) in female yellow-blotched map turtles, Graptemys flavimaculata, from the Pascagoula River, Mississippi. In 1996, plasma from females was analyzed for progesterone. In 1997, ovaries of adult females were ultrasound imaged to determine stages of follicular development. Males exhibited peak T levels in September and October of both years, indicating fall gonadal activity. Males also exhibited a low level spring peak in T during April. Female E(2) levels

Detection of herpesviral sequences in tissues of green turtles with fibropapilloma by polymerase chain reaction.

An alpha-herpesvirus has been associated recently with green turtle fibropapilloma (FP). To further clarify the role of this newfound green turtle herpesvirus (GTHV) in the pathogenesis of FP, various normal-appearing tissues and organs (including skin, eye, brain, heart, liver, spleen, intestine, lung, kidney, nerve, gonad, tongue, gall bladder, urinary bladder, thyroid and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from blood) and tumor tissues from 19 green turtles (Chelonia mydas) with FP, and tissues from three green turtles without FP, collected during 1997 to 1999 in the Hawaiian Islands

Evaluation of a portable glucometer for blood glucose measurement in juvenile green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas).

Blood glucose is a key physiological indicator in sea turtles, but its measurement in field settings can be challenging. Portable point-of-care (POC) glucometers offer practicality, yet their agreement with reference laboratory methods has not been established for juvenile green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) from the Southwestern Atlantic. We compared glucose concentrations from a portable glucometer with a reference enzymatic method using blood samples from 30 free-ranging juvenile green turtles captured in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Agreement was assessed by Wilcoxon signed-rank test, Passing-Ba

Morphological Investigation of Uncharacterised Cardiovascular Structures in Shallow-Diving, Semi-Aquatic Freshwater Turtles (Chelidae: Emydura macquarii).

Reptiles with diving capabilities have evolved physiological adaptations as well as conformational changes to temporarily sustain life underwater. Despite the importance of both respiratory and cardiovascular systems during diving, most studies have focused on respiratory adaptations. Thus, characterisation of previously undescribed cardiovascular anatomical variations in diving vertebrates is of broad interest. Thirteen clinically healthy, free-ranging adult female Murray River turtles (Chelidae: Emydura macquarii) were collected for research purposes, euthanised and autopsied. Prominent, val
