BACKGROUND: Water irrigant is discouraged in ureteroscopy due to risks demonstrated in more invasive endoscopic procedures. However, water is not well studied in ureteroscopy and may provide better visualization than standard saline.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether water irrigant increases the risk of hyponatremia compared with saline and provides better visualization in ureteroscopy.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A randomized, prospective, double-blinded trial was conducted. In 2017, eligible adult ureteroscopy patients at a university hospital were recruited for the study.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the incidence of urinary stone disease reportedly has been increasing. The use of shockwave lithotripsy has seen low success rates, the inefficacy of a single session, and the need for general anaesthesia in children; additionally, children are exposed to radiation. These suboptimal treatment conditions have all led to ureteroscopy (URS) becoming the treatment method of choice for paediatric ureter stones. The aim of this study is to examine the effectiveness of 4.5-Fr URS when used on children younger than 1 year of age.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The operation result

INTRODUCTION: The traditional procedure for the management of bilateral ureteral stones is staged ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URS). However, in recent years particularly, some urologists advocate same-session bilateral URS on the ground of success rates and minimal morbidity. This systematic review is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of same-session bilateral ureteroscopy for the treatment of ureteral calculi.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a bibliographic search using MEDLINE (1980 to August 2015) and EMBASE (1980 to August 2015). Review articles and abstract data were excluded and on

Between May 1985 and September 1990, 291 ureteroscopies were performed either for primary or secondary stone therapy or for diagnostic purposes. Rigid ureteroscopes (12.5 or 9.5 French) were used without dilation of the ureteral orifice. 83% of the stones could be removed either by direct extraction or electrohydraulic or ultrasound lithotripsy. The highest failure rates (25.6%) occurred in stones located in the upper ureter, the lowest failure rate (9.6%) resulted from treatment of lower ureteral stones. 3.4% complications were observed such as perforation, leakage, stenosis and septicemia. OBJECTIVE: To measure temperature of the outer ureteral wall and calculate thermal dose with different irrigation and laser power settings during ureteroscopy in a porcine in vivo model.
METHODS: The ureters of two porcine subjects were exposed through laparotomy incisions. A length of PFA tubing, with equally spaced windows, was inserted into the ureter through a ureterotomy. An array of thermocouples was positioned on the outside of the ureter, colocated with the windows. A LithoVue Elite (Boston Scientific) ureteroscope with a wire thermocouple attached was inserted into the tube adjacent

Perioperative vision loss following non-ophthalmic surgical procedures represents a rare but potentially serious complication. Although its occurrence in urology is infrequent, the consequences for patients and legal implications are significant. We present the case of a 53-year-old woman with no notable medical history, treated for renal lithiasis. Following the ureteroscopy, the patient experienced a sudden reduction in visual acuity. The diagnosis made was that of posterior ischemic optic neuropathy. This case illustrates a rare complication associated with ureteroscopy, highlighting the im

OBJECTIVE: To compare intrarenal pressure (IRP) and irrigation flow by varying suspended water heights and hand-held pressure pumping during flexible ureteroscopy using an in vitro 3D printed kidney model.
METHODS: A 3D-printed silicone model was used to simulate the kidney. The ureteral access sheath(UAS) was connected to the kidney model and positioned at the ureteropelvic junction. Central venous pressure tubing was used to monitor the pressure in the renal pelvis under different conditions. Sheath sizes of 12Fr and 14Fr were tested with flexible ureteroscope (fURS) sizes of 7.5, 8.5, and

Introduction: Ureteral thermal injury has been reported in patients following ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy due to overheating of fluid within the ureter. Proper understanding of this risk necessitates knowing the volume of fluid available to absorb laser energy. This can be approximated as the volume of fluid that mixes during laser activation, since energy transfer through fluid is dominated by convection. Objectives of this study were to determine the volume of fluid that mixes during laser activation at different irrigation rates and to characterize the temporal/spatial temperature d

OBJECTIVES: To create an in vitro anatomic bench model that can mimic in vivo intrapelvic pressure (IPP) during ureteroscopy (URS) and compare it against existing in vivo and ex vivo data.
METHODS: A silicone kidney model (Simagine Health) that permits intrarenal endoscopic navigation was engineered to have a fluid-tight seal for the ureteral opening and a Tuohy-Borst valve in the renal pelvis incorporating a 0.2 mm pressure sensor (Opsens). To calibrate the model, a Cobra ureteroscope (Wolf) was inserted to the pelvis with 200cmH2O irrigation, and the valve adjusted until an IPP of 54cmH2O w

INTRODUCTION: Ureteral duplication is the most common ureteral anomaly, occurring in 0.6%-0.7% of the population. Our objective was to compare urolithiasis treatment outcomes in patients with and without ureteral duplication.
METHODS: Patients with ureteral duplication who underwent ureteroscopy (URS) were identified in a stone registry at a high-volume, tertiary care center from 1998 to 2015. Preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative data were collected retrospectively. A 1:1 control cohort of patients without duplication was identified, matched by stone location and size, as well as a
