Using medical incidents to teach: effects of vicarious experience on nursing students' self-efficacy in performing urinary catheterization.

This study compared the effects of instruction on nursing students' self-efficacy in urinary catheterization, using positively and negatively worded examples after vicarious experience of a medical incident. Nursing students (n = 128) completed measures on urinary catheterization performance, general self-efficacy, and self-efficacy in urinary catheterization before being assigned to one of three groups: the instruction with negative examples (NE), the instruction with positive examples (PE), or the control group. Each group read the same medical incident. The instruction with NE and PE groups

Optimum method for urinary drainage in major abdominal surgery: a prospective randomized trial of suprapubic versus urethral catheterization.

The outcome of suprapubic and urethral catheterization in abdominal surgery was compared in a prospective randomized trial. Twenty-eight patients received a suprapubic and 29 a urethral catheter. The groups were similar in terms of age, sex, operation performed and postoperative analgesia. There was no difference in the duration of catheterization (suprapubic: median 5 (range 4-10) days; urethral: median 4 (range 2-11) days). Urinary sepsis occurred in three patients in each group. Urethral catheters caused pain in significantly more patients (urethral 13; suprapubic two; chi 2 = 8.6, 1 d.f. P

Postoperative Urinary Catheterization in Children Treated with or without Epidural Analgesia after Orthopedic Surgery: A Retrospective Review of Practice.

Epidural analgesia is effective and an accepted treatment for postoperative pain. Urinary retention is a known complication, but its description is mostly in the adult literature. Management of urinary catheter (UC) placement and removal is an important consideration in children receiving epidural analgesia. This is a single-center, retrospective observational study which examined UC management in children undergoing lower extremity orthopedic surgery under general anesthesia with or without epidural analgesia from January 2019−June 2021. Of 239 children included, epidural analgesia was used i

Ventral Spinal Epidural Hematoma Triggered by Self-Urinary Catheterization and the Role of Diffusion-Weighted Imaging in Early Detection.

Spontaneous spinal epidural hematomas (SSEHs) are extremely rare and clinically recognized by sudden onset of severe neck pain and progressive neurological deficits. Ventral SSEH is particularly uncommon, accounting for less than 10% of SSEH cases. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial, especially using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, conventional MRI sequences occasionally exhibit unclear signal changes during the early stages of hemorrhage, which may be overlooked by clinicians unfamiliar with this uncommon disease. This report presents the case of an 81-year-old man who develop

Chronic suprapubic catheterization in the management of patients with spinal cord injuries: analysis of upper and lower urinary tract complications.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether chronic suprapubic catheterization (SPC) in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) is associated with a higher incidence of significant urinary tract complications than in patients whose urinary tracts are managed by other methods. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Our experience suggested that the incidence of complications in patients with SCI and SPC was acceptable and relatively low. Between 1988 and 2001, 1018 patients were admitted to our unit after SCI; 149 were managed by SPC and we retrospectively reviewed them, with a mean follow-up of 6 years. There were no complic

Correlation of periurethral bacterial flora with bacteriuria and urinary tract infection in children with neurogenic bladder receiving intermittent catheterization.

Periurethral bacteria are inoculated daily into the urine of children with neurogenic bladder during clean intermittent catheterization (CIC). We examined how frequently periurethral bacterial species produced bacteriuria in children followed longitudinally. When Escherichia coli was detected on the periurethra, bacteriuria was also present 93% of the time. When Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, or Enterococcus species or nonpathogens were detected on the periurethra, bacteriuria was present 80%, 40%, 40%, and 25% of the time, respectively. Clonal typing of multiple colonies of E. coli from each periur
