High hemodialysis vascular access flow and impaired right ventricular function in chronic hemodialysis patients.

There are limited data showing right ventricular preload increase due to high-flow arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs). This cross-sectional study investigated whether high AVF flow had an impact on right ventricular function in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Sixty-four patients aged between 18 and 85 years who were on routine hemodialysis with >2 hemodialysis sessions per week for at least 3 months via an AVF were studied. Patients with inadequate flow fistulas, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, history of pulmonary embolism, primary pulmonary hypertension, severe mitral, aortic or p

Da Silva's cone repair for Ebstein's anomaly: effect on right ventricular size and function.

OBJECTIVES: Da Silva's cone repair is a novel technique for surgical reconstruction of the tricuspid valve and the right ventricle (RV) in Ebstein's anomaly. The technique consists of extensive leaflet mobilization, longitudinal plication of the atrialized ventricle and cone-shaped reconstruction of the tricuspid valve, allowing for leaflet-to-leaflet coaptation. We evaluated the influence of Da Silva's cone repair on tricuspid competency, right ventricular size and function. METHODS: From February 2010 until July 2013, 20 patients (median age 30.0 years, range 6.6-68.3 years) underwent Da Si

Effect of inhaled nitric oxide on right ventricular function in adult respiratory distress syndrome.

To determine whether inhaled nitric oxide (NO) affects pulmonary circulation, thereby improving right ventricular (RV) function in adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), we studied 13 patients with both a lung injury severity score of 2.5 or more and a mean pulmonary artery pressure higher than 30 mm Hg. RV function was assessed by a thermodilution technique using a pulmonary artery catheter equipped with a rapid response thermistor before and 15 min after initiation of inhalation of NO (5 ppm). At baseline, stroke volumes were in a normal range (46 +/- 14 ml/m2), with a RV dilation (end-

Studies in clinical shock and hypotension: VI. Relationship between left and right ventricular function.

Left ventricular end diastolic (LVEDP) and mean right atrial (RAP) pressures were recorded simultaneously in 30 patients with shock (14 acute myocardial infarction, 10 acute pulmonary embolism or severe bronchopulmonary disease, and 6 sepsis). Myocardial infarction was characterized by a predominant increase in LVEDP, pulmonary disease by a predominant increase in RAP, and sepsis by a normal relationship between LVEDP and RAP. In all three groups a significant positive correlation was noted between RAP and LVEDP, with the regression line in cor pulmonale deviated significantly toward the RAP a

Correlation of Echocardiographic Right Ventricular Functional Parameters with CMR-Derived Right Ventricular Ejection Fraction in Pulmonary Hypertension: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is associated with increased pulmonary arterial pressure and impairment of right ventricular (RV) function. Reliable characterization of RV performance is important for prognosis, risk assessment, and therapeutic planning. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is considered the reference technique for quantifying RV volumes and function, but its expense and limited availability can restrict routine implementation. Echocardiography is more widely accessible; however, the extent to which individual echocardiographic indices correspond with CMR-derived RV ejecti

[A case of tricuspid pouch associated with ventricular septal defect and functional left ventricular-right atrial communication].

We reported a 60-year-old woman with tricuspid pouch associated with ventricular septal defect and subsequent left ventricular-right atrial communication. Preoperative angiographic findings suggested the presence of membranous septal aneurysm, ventricular and atrial septal defects, and tricuspid insufficiency. However, at operation, besides perimembranous inlet type ventricular septal defect, a pouch, 1.5 cm in diameter was found in the adjacent part to the septal leaflet within the anterior one of the tricuspid valve. The ventricular septal defect was closed with a patch. From these findings,

Stabilization of RyR2 maintains right ventricular function, reduces the development of ventricular arrhythmias, and improves prognosis in pulmonary hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Right ventricular (RV) dysfunction and its associated arrhythmias are recognized as important determinants of the prognosis of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). OBJECTIVE: Here, we aimed to investigate whether direct pharmacological intervention in the RV muscle with dantrolene (DAN), a stabilizer of the cardiac ryanodine receptor (RyR2), has a protective effect against RV dysfunction and arrhythmia in a monocrotaline (MCT)-induced PAH rat model. METHODS: Male 8-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats were injected with MCT for the induction of PAH. Induction of ventricular tachycardia

Right ventricular function after repair of tetralogy of Fallot: an echocardiographic and clinical evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Right ventricular dysfunction is a major determinant of long-term outcomes after tetralogy of Fallot repair, particularly in the presence of chronic pulmonary regurgitation. Strain analysis may detect early right ventricular dysfunction more sensitively than conventional echocardiographic parameters. METHODS: This retrospective single-centre study included 63 patients after tetralogy of Fallot repair who underwent postoperative echocardiographic evaluation during mid-term follow-up. Right ventricular function was assessed using tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion, right ven

Detailed quantification of right ventricular function in tetralogy of Fallot: a 3D echocardiography study.

AIMS: Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) is a congenital heart disease requiring surgical repair in early childhood. Affected patients cope with severe right ventricle (RV)-related morbidity during adulthood, which is mostly attributed to RV remodelling. Improved understanding of RV remodelling patterns is essential for advancements in clinical decision-making and treatment planning. Consequently, a method to enable detailed quantification of directional components of RV function was developed using 3D echocardiography (3DE). METHODS AND RESULTS: From RV-focused 3DE studies of 50 ToF patients and 50 h
