Risk factors for vertebral deformities in men: relationship to number of vertebral deformities. European Vertebral Osteoporosis Study Group.

Recent epidemiological studies suggest a similar overall prevalence of vertebral deformity in men to that in women, though the influence of increasing age on the prevalence of vertebral deformity is less marked in men. However, most affected men have only a single or two vertebral deformities, which may be unrelated to osteoporosis. The aim of this study was to examine the role of risk factors, previously demonstrated to be associated with vertebral osteoporosis in females, in men with single/dual deformities compared to those with multiple deformities. Age stratified random samples of men age

Antibody diversification in cartilaginous fishes: Mechanistic insights from the nurse shark and comparative perspectives across jawed vertebrates.

Antibody diversity in vertebrates arises through the coordinated actions of V(D)J recombination and somatic hypermutation (SHM). Cartilaginous fishes occupy a key phylogenetic position as the sister lineage to bony vertebrates and therefore provide important comparative insights into the evolution of adaptive immunity. This review focuses on the nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum) as a representative model for examining antibody-diversification mechanisms in cartilaginous fishes. Shark immunoglobulin genes exhibit a multicluster organization, while immunoglobulin new antigen receptor (IgNAR),

Host-specific ubiquitination of prM orchestrates ESCRT recruitment to mediate efficient Japanese Encephalitis Virus assembly in vertebrates.

Mosquito-borne orthoflavivirus, such as Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), Dengue virus (DENV), and Zika virus (ZIKV), pose a serious global health threat. As obligate intracellular parasites, they often hijack the host ubiquitin system to modify their own proteins, thereby regulating the viral life cycle, host adaptation, transmission, and pathogenesis. Despite its critical roles, the precise molecular mechanisms and functional significance of viral protein ubiquitination in orthoflavivirus infection remain incompletely understood. Here, we identify JEV prM as a novel target for host-specific

Misbehaving Fish: The role of these simple vertebrates in the analysis of human brain function and dysfunction.

Analysis of behaviour was the first approach with which the functioning of the brain could be studied in the distant past. The simple beginnings have led to one of the most sophisticated, fast-paced, burgeoning fields of biology research, neuroscience. Analysis of behaviour remains an integral part of neuroscience, and has led to the formation of the subfield of behavioural neuroscience. Here, I focus on this subfield, and specifically on the role of research with fish in it. I review why behavioural analysis is important for brain research and why studying this cluster of phenotypes with fish

Deciphering the Origin of DNA Viruses (Replication-Associated Parvo-NS1) That Infect Vertebrates from Invertebrate-Infecting Viruses.

DNA replication is a standard and essential function among DNA viruses; however, this functional domain's common ancestor, origin, and evolutionary path in invertebrate- and vertebrate-infecting viruses are not yet fully understood. Here, we present evidence, using a combination of phylogenetic relationships, coevolution, and CLANS (cluster analysis of sequences) analysis, that the parvo-NS1 domain (nonstructural protein NS1, DNA helicase domain) of these DNA viruses that infect vertebrates potentially originated from the invertebrate (Platyhelminthes) parvo-NS1 domain of parvovirus-related se

An overview of the phylogeny of cardiorespiratory control in vertebrates with some reflections on the 'Polyvagal Theory'.

Mammals show clear changes in heart rate linked to lung ventilation, characterized as respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA). These changes are controlled in part by variations in the level of inhibitory control exerted on the heart by the parasympathetic arm of the autonomic nervous system (PNS). This originates from preganglionic neurons in the nucleus ambiguous that supply phasic, respiration-related activity to the cardiac branch of the vagus nerve, via myelinated, efferent fibres with rapid conduction velocities. An elaboration of these central mechanisms, under the control of a 'vagal system

Genetic basis for an evolutionary shift from ancestral preaxial to postaxial limb polarity in non-urodele vertebrates.

In most tetrapod vertebrates, limb skeletal progenitors condense with postaxial dominance. Posterior elements (such as ulna and fibula) appear prior to their anterior counterparts (radius and tibia), followed by digit-appearance order with continuing postaxial polarity. The only exceptions are urodele amphibians (salamanders), whose limb elements develop with preaxial polarity and who are also notable for their unique ability to regenerate complete limbs as adults. The mechanistic basis for this preaxial dominance has remained an enigma and has even been proposed to relate to the acquisition o

Whole organism concentration ratios of radionuclides and metals in terrestrial vertebrates of an Australian tropical savanna environment.

Preliminary values of whole organism concentration ratio (CRwo-soil) were derived for terrestrial vertebrates of an Australian tropical savanna environment. Wildlife groups included bird, bat, ground-dwelling mammal and reptile. Sample data for some of the wildlife groups (bird and bat in particular) were limited. The bird and bat CRwo-soil values were generally lower than the ground-dwelling mammal and reptile CRwo-soil values based on the available data. Arithmetic mean CRwo-soil values for two species of native marsupial and two species of non-native placental were not significantly differe

Evolution of IFN-λ in tetrapod vertebrates and its functional characterization in green anole lizard (Anolis carolinensis).

IFN-λ (IFNL), i.e. type III IFN genes were found in a conserved gene locus in tetrapod vertebrates. But, a unique locus containing IFNL was found in avian. In turtle and crocodile, IFNL genes were distributed in these two separate loci. As revealed in phylogenetic trees, IFN-λs in these two different loci and other amniotes were grouped into two different clades. The conservation in gene presence and gene locus was also observed for the receptors of IFN-λ, IFN-λR1 and IL-10RB in tetrapods. It is further revealed that in North American green anole lizard Anolis carolinensis, a single IFNL gene

Synchrotron-aided reconstruction of the conodont feeding apparatus and implications for the mouth of the first vertebrates.

The origin of jaws remains largely an enigma that is best addressed by studying fossil and living jawless vertebrates. Conodonts were eel-shaped jawless animals, whose vertebrate affinity is still disputed. The geometrical analysis of exceptional three-dimensionally preserved clusters of oro-pharyngeal elements of the Early Triassic Novispathodus, imaged using propagation phase-contrast X-ray synchrotron microtomography, suggests the presence of a pulley-shaped lingual cartilage similar to that of extant cyclostomes within the feeding apparatus of euconodonts ("true" conodonts). This would len

Similar localization of immunoreactive glutamate and aspartate in the pineal organ and retina of various nonmammalian vertebrates.

The localization of immunoreactive glutamate and aspartate was compared in the pineal organ and retina of various vertebrates (Raja clavata, Carassius auratus, Salvelinus alpinus, Triturus vulgaris, Triturus cristatus, Lacerta muralis, Lacerta agilis, Lacerta viridis, Columbia livia and white leghorn chicken) by postembedding immunoelectron microscopy. Immunoreaction of both excitatory amino acids was detected in the pinealocytes in a localization similar to that of retinal photoreceptors. The reaction was intense in the axonal processes of pinealocytes as well as retinal rods and cones, furth

Plastics as disruptors of feeding, digestive physiology, metabolism, and growth in fish and other aquatic ectothermic vertebrates.

Plastics, particularly microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs), are widespread contaminants in aquatic ecosystems that affect key physiological processes related to feeding, digestion, metabolism, and growth in aquatic ectotherms, particularly fish. Increasing evidence indicates that plastic exposure disrupts energy balance by reducing food intake through false satiety, gastrointestinal obstruction, and behavioral alterations, while also impairing digestive efficiency, nutrient absorption, and metabolic regulation. MPs and NPs can interfere with endocrine signaling pathways involved in appe

Vertebrates can be more important pollinators than invertebrates on islands: the case of Malva (=Lavatera) arborea L.

Premise of the study: On islands, flowering plants tend to be more generalist in their pollination needs, as insects (the main pollinators of flowering plants) are underrepresented in these ecosystems compared to the mainland. In addition, some vertebrate species that are typically insectivorous or granivorous on the mainland are forced to broaden their diet and consume other resources such as nectar or pollen on the islands. The shrub Malva arborea, with its large and colourful flowers, attracts different groups of potential pollinators. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of verteb

SOX2-Sensing: Insights into the Role of SOX2 in the Generation of Sensory Cell Types in Vertebrates.

The SOX2 transcription factor is a key regulator of nervous system development, and its mutation in humans leads to a rare disease characterized by severe eye defects, cognitive defects, hearing defects, abnormalities of the CNS and motor control problems. SOX2 has an essential role in neural stem cell maintenance in specific regions of the brain, and it is one of the master genes required for the generation of induced pluripotent stem cells. Sox2 is expressed in sensory organs, and this review will illustrate how it regulates the differentiation of sensory cell types required for hearing, tou

The transmission of Leishmania infantum chagasi by the bite of the Lutzomyia longipalpis to two different vertebrates.

BACKGROUND: Sandflies are vectors of Leishmania, the causative agent of leishmaniasis in mammalian hosts, including humans. The protozoan parasite is transmitted by the sandfly bite during salivation that occurs at the moment of blood feeding. The components of vector saliva include anticlotting and vasodilatory factors that facilitate blood flow and immunomodulatory factors that inhibit wound healing and quell the immune response. Not surprisingly, these factors also play important roles in the establishment of Leishmania infection. To date, the majority of knowledge that has been generated r

The use of tetracycline hydrochloride as a rapid fluorescent stain for myelin membranes in vertebrates and invertebrates.

We report here the use of tetracycline as a fast and reliable histological stain of myelinated nerves. These results are significant in that they point to tetracyclines as potentially important probes to study the role of divalent and trivalent cations in myelinated nerves. The usefulness and specificity of tetracycline as a supravital probe for calcium and iron metabolism in myelinated nerves is currently under study.

Phylo- and -ontogenetically determined local changes in the structure of the arterial wall of vertebrates. Macroscopical findings.

It has been shown, by means of comparative anatomical, phylo- and -ontogenetic studies, that the focal structural changes occuring at seven points in the wall of the aortic arch and brachiocephalic arteries of reptiles, birds, and mammals, and in human-beinmnants of certain vessels which have regressed during embryonic development. They are considered to be loci minoris resistentiae and might therefore represent a site of predilection for pathological lesions, such as atherosclerosis. The existence of these "scars" in human-beings and birds has already been described. This paper presents defin

Adjacent vertebral fractures after percutaneous vertebral augmentation of osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture: a comparison of balloon kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty.

INTRODUCTION: It is still controversial whether adjacent level compression fractures after balloon kyphoplasty (BK) and vertebroplasty (VP) should be regarded as the consequence of stiffness achieved by augmentation with bone cement or if the adjacent level fractures are simply the result of the natural progression of osteoporosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the adjacent level fracture risk after BK as compared with VP and to determine the possible dominant risk factor associated with new compression fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 73 consecutive patients with painful vertebr
