Hepatitis C antibody testing among opioid agonist therapy recipients, Victoria, Australia, 2012 to 2020.

BACKGROUND: The high burden of hepatitis C among people who inject drugs in Australia underscores the need to increase testing within this population. Understanding hepatitis C screening uptake in primary care settings is therefore critical to the development of effective and targeted strategies to improve hepatitis C testing for people who inject drugs. Primary care services that prescribe OAT are well-positioned to provide hepatitis C testing among a priority population at-risk of hepatitis C. METHODS: This study used linked data from 5,429 individuals attending ten clinical services partic

An idiopathic upper alimentary tract ulcerative syndrome in weaned dairy calves in Victoria, Australia.

An idiopathic clinical syndrome had been described in weaned dairy calves in the state of Victoria, Australia, where affected animals presented with diarrhoea, ill-thrift, enteritis and ulceration of the upper alimentary tract, with occasional oral/nasal ulcers. Between 7 November 2016 and 31 March 2019, 34 Victorian cattle herds were investigated, after each reported five or more weaned calves with diarrhoea and/or ill-thrift, or at least one calf with oral/nasal ulceration. Primary study objectives included the development of a detailed case definition for the clinical syndrome, termed upper

Prolonged Outbreak of Multidrug-Resistant Shigella sonnei Harboring blaCTX-M-27 in Victoria, Australia.

In Australia, cases of shigellosis usually occur in returned travelers from regions of shigellosis endemicity or in men who have sex with men. Resistance to multiple antibiotics has significantly increased in Shigella sonnei isolates and represents a significant public health concern. We investigate an outbreak of multidrug-resistant S. sonnei in Victoria, Australia. We undertook whole-genome sequencing of 54 extended-spectrum-beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing S. sonnei isolates received at the Microbiological Diagnostic Unit Public Health Laboratory between January 2019 and March 2020. The popu

Chlamydia pecorum Infection in Free-ranging Koalas ( Phascolarctos cinereus ) on French Island, Victoria, Australia.

We detected Chlamydia pecorum in two koalas ( Phascolarctos cinereus ) from a closed island population in Victoria, Australia, previously free of Chlamydia infection. The ompA and multilocus sequence type were most closely related to published isolates of livestock rather than koala origin, suggesting potential cross-species transmission of C. pecorum .

Acquisition of HIV by African-born residents of Victoria, Australia: insights from molecular epidemiology.

African-born Australians are a recognised "priority population" in Australia's Sixth National HIV/AIDS Strategy. We compared exposure location and route for African-born people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Victoria, Australia, with HIV-1 pol subtype from drug resistance assays and geographical origin suggested by phylogenetic analysis of env gene. Twenty adult HIV positive African-born Victorian residents were recruited via treating doctors. HIV exposure details were obtained from interviews and case notes. Viral RNA was extracted from participant stored plasma or whole blood. The env V3 region

Population-based carrier screening for cystic fibrosis in Victoria: the first three years experience.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common inherited, life-shortening condition affecting Australian children. The carrier frequency is one per 25 and most babies with CF are born to parents with no family history. Carrier testing is possible before a couple has an affected infant. AIMS: To report the outcomes of a carrier screening program for CF. METHOD: Carrier screening was offered to women and couples planning a pregnancy, or in early pregnancy, through obstetricians and general practitioners in Victoria, Australia. Samples were collected by cheek swab and posted to the laborat

Schistosoma mansoni in infants (aged < 3 years) along the Ugandan shoreline of Lake Victoria.

In two complementary epidemiological surveys of villages on the Ugandan shoreline of Lake Victoria, the putative occurrence of intestinal schistosomiasis in the local infants (children aged < 3 years) was investigated. When, during the first survey, 136 mother-and-infant pairs from a total of 12 villages were studied, only 7% of the infants but 45% of the mothers were found to be egg-patent for Schistosoma mansoni infection. The use of dipstick tests for urine-circulating cathodic antigen indicated, however, a much higher prevalence, of approximately 40%, among the infants. In the second surve

Compliance with surgical antibiotic prophylaxis--reporting from a statewide surveillance programme in Victoria, Australia.

A statewide assessment of the compliance of surgical antibiotic prophylaxis (SAP) with guidelines was undertaken for large public hospitals in Victoria, Australia. This was carried out using data collected as part of a surveillance system for hospital-acquired infections. The study population comprised patients in Victorian public hospitals with >100 beds (N=27) undergoing cardiac surgical procedures, hip or knee arthroplasty, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, colon surgery or hysterectomy over a 21-month period. Australian guidelines recommend SAP for all 10 643 surgical procedures included in t

Compulsory blood alcohol testing of road crash casualties in Victoria: the first three years.

The history, rationale and implementation of legislation for compulsory blood alcohol tests on adult road crash casualties presenting at Victorian hospitals are reviewed. Drinking drivers admitted to casualty departments can now be identified and prosecuted; doctors can obtain blood alcohol test results on road crash casualties without threat of litigation; drinking drivers with alcohol problems may be directed to appropriate re-education or rehabilitation programmes; the opportunity also exists for treatment of non-driver casualties with alcohol problems. In the first three years of testing,

Volatile Compounds from Vishniacozyma victoriae Induce Glandular Trichome Development in Humulus lupulus.

H. lupulus (hops) is an essential ingredient in beer brewing owing to specialized metabolites stored in glandular trichomes (GTs) within cones. While metabolic pathways in GTs have been partially elucidated, the factors that trigger the GT formation remain unclear. Here, we found that volatile compounds produced by the phyllosphere yeast Vishniacozyma victoriae (V. victoriae) induced GT formation. We also identified 2-nonanone, a methyl ketone, as the bioactive compound in the volatiles released from V. victoriae that induced GT formation. Gene expression analyses revealed that treatment with

Geographic region variation in patient characteristics, clinical outcomes and treatment of HFrEF in the VICTORIA trial.

AIMS: Heterogeneity in demographics, aetiology, healthcare access and guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT), and survival bias of patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is evident from international trials and registries. The current study examines conventional geographic variation in participants' phenotypes, standard of care, clinical outcomes and treatment effects of vericiguat versus placebo within the VICTORIA trial. We then evaluate an alternative approach to assessing the relationship between geographic variation in the efficacy of new therapeutics. METH
