ATV deaths among older adults in West Virginia: evidence suggesting that "60 is the new 40!".

OBJECTIVES: Describe the epidemiology of all-terrain vehicle (ATV) deaths among persons > or =65 years of age in West Virginia from 1999-2007. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a review of death certificates identifying ATV fatalities from ICD-10 diagnostic codes V86.0, V86.1, V86.3, V86.5, V86.6, and V86.9. RESULTS: ATV deaths increased 155% from 11% during 1985-1998 to 28% during 1999-2007. Injuries to the upper and lower trunk (62%) were the most common injuries, followed by head and neck injuries (28%). Fatality rates increased substantially from 0.37 deaths per 100,000 in 1990 to 2.14

Urinary bladder incarceration and infarction by an intra-abdominal fat pad in a Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana).

A 2.5-year-old, female opossum had acute stranguria. Based on radiography and ultrasonographic examination a cystic structure was identified in the caudal abdomen associated with bilateral hydroureter and hydronephrosis. This structure contained a neutrophilic fluid, determined to be urine. There was a neutrophilic leukocytosis. Serum chemistry values were within normal limits. The opossum was euthanized. An intra-abdominal fat pad incarceration of the urinary bladder above the trigone was present, resulting in complete obstruction of the urinary bladder and partial obstruction of the ureters.

Genetics and developmental psychopathology: 1. Phenotypic assessment in the Virginia Twin Study of Adolescent Behavioral Development.

We introduce an overlapping cohort sequential longitudinal study of behavioral development and psychopathology in a representative sample of 1412 pairs of twins aged 8 through 16 years. Multiple phenotypic assessments involve a full psychiatric interview with each child and each parent, and supplementary parental, teacher, and child interview material and questionnaires. For the first wave of assessments, the numbers of reported DSM-III-R symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Separation Anxiety Disorder (SAD), Overanxious Disorder (OAD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Conduct Diso

Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis) Home Range and Oral Rabies Vaccine Bait Distribution in West Virginia, USA.

Oral rabies vaccination (ORV) has successfully prevented appreciable spread of the raccoon rabies virus variant (RRVV) west of the Appalachian Mountains in the US. However, local and regional elimination of RRVV has been challenging, particularly in areas of the eastern US with routine spillover transmission to striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) populations. We used rabies antibody seroprevalence monitoring data from two ORV baiting strategies, a 75 baits/km2 applied from 2012 to 2013 and a 300 baits/km2 applied from 2014 to 2016, in West Virginia, US, and home range estimates on the basis of d

Tick Species Composition, Collection Rates, and Phenology Provide Insights into Tick-Borne Disease Ecology in Virginia.

To better understand tick ecology in Virginia and the increasing Lyme disease incidence in western Virginia, a comparative phenological study was conducted in which monthly collections were performed at twelve sampling locations in southwestern Virginia (high Lyme disease incidence) and 18 equivalent sampling locations in southeastern Virginia (low Lyme disease incidence) for one year. In western Virginia, we also explored the effect of elevation on collection rates of Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae) and Amblyomma americanum (L.) (Acari: Ixodidae). In total, 35,438 ticks were collected

Can antenatal ultrasounds help predict postnatal outcomes in babies born with gastrochisis? The West Virginia experience.

OBJECTIVE: Gastrochisis is a congenital condition resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. Multiple studies have been done to evaluate the value of prognostic indicators with conflicting results. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of ultrasound in this condition at a single institution while limiting the provider variables that may affect neonatal outcome. METHODS: The antepartum charts of expectant mothers of affected fetuses as well as the neonatal hospital charts were reviewed at length. The cases were identified over a period of 4 years from April 1998 to February 200

Crowdsourced, Community-Engaged Volatile Organic Compound Monitoring and Source Apportionment near the Bristol Virginia Solid Waste Landfill.

Municipal solid waste landfills can emit complex mixtures of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), but community exposures are difficult to characterize because concentrations vary across space and time and may be influenced by episodic odor events, meteorology, and nonlandfill sources. Community-engaged research approaches can help address these challenges while incorporating residents' local knowledge and concerns into monitoring study design. We conducted a community-engaged citizen-science study using a modified Ultrasonic Personal Air Sampler operated in accordance with U.S. EPA Method TO-17

Overdose Experiences among People Who Inject Drugs in West Virginia: Personal Loss, Psychological Distress, Naloxone, and Fentanyl.

Background: As overdose remains a major public health concern in the United States, it is important to understand the experiences people who inject drugs (PWID) have with overdose. Past experiences during such emergencies are an important determinant of future behavior, including help seeking, which can be lifesaving. Methods: We explored experiences with overdose, using data from 21 in-depth interviews collected from PWID in a rural county in West Virginia (Cabell County). We used an iterative, modified constant comparison approach to synthesize resulting interview data. Results: Participants

Genetic variation of Borreliella burgdorferi in Fairfax County, Virginia, targeting the OspC gene in white-footed mice.

Outer surface protein C (OspC) is a commonly used marker in population studies of Borreliella to differentiate types and establish evolution over time. Investigating the ospC genetic types of Borreliella burgdorferi across multiple organ tissues of white-footed mice has the potential to contribute to our understanding of Lyme disease and the wide spectrum of clinical presentation associated with infection. In this study, five unique tissue types were sampled from 90 mice and screened for B. burgdorferi infections. This initial screening revealed a 63% overall B. burgdorferi infection rate in t
