The British journal of psychiatry : the journal of mental science2012eng
BACKGROUND: Visual hallucinations and visuoperceptual deficits are common in dementia with Lewy bodies, suggesting that cortical visual function may be abnormal.
AIMS: To investigate: (1) cortical visual function using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI); and (2) the nature and severity of perfusion deficits in visual areas using arterial spin labelling (ASL)-MRI.
METHOD: In total, 17 participants with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB group) and 19 similarly aged controls were presented with simple visual stimuli (checkerboard, moving dots, and objects) during fMRI and subsequently un

In the cat or primate primary visual cortex (V1), normal vision corresponds to a state where neural excitation patterns are driven by external visual stimuli. A spectacular failure mode of V1 occurs when such patterns are overwhelmed by spontaneously generated spatially self-organized patterns of neural excitation. These are experienced as geometric visual hallucinations. The problem of identifying the mechanisms by which V1 avoids this failure is made acute by recent advances in the statistical mechanics of pattern formation, which suggest that the hallucinatory state should be very robust. Categorization is a basic mental process that helps individuals distinguish among groups of negative and positive objects, e.g., poisons and nutrients, or predators and prey. Monkey experiments have suggested that lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) participates in learning and processing visual categories. However, in humans category specific visual agnosia follows inferior temporal cortex but not LPFC damage. Here, we use a new behavioral approach to show that both normal monkeys and those with bilateral removal of LPFC learn and generalize perceptual categories of related visual stimuli rapidl

The extrastriate visual cortex forms a complex system enabling the analysis of visually presented objects. To gain deeper insight into the anatomical basis of this system, we cytoarchitectonically mapped the ventral occipital cortex lateral to BA 18/V2 in 10 human postmortem brains. The anatomical characterization of this part of the ventral stream was performed by examination of cell-body-stained histological sections using quantitative cytoarchitectonic analysis. First, the gray level index (GLI) was measured in the ventral occipital lobe. Cytoarchitectonic borders, i.e., significant changes

Recent evidence suggests that priming of objects across different images (abstract priming) and priming of specific images of an object (form-specific priming) are mediated by dissociable neural processing subsystems that operate in parallel and are predominantly linked to left and right hemispheric processing, respectively [Marsolek, C. J. Dissociable neural subsystems underlie abstract and specific object recognition. Psychological Science, 10, 111-118, 1999]. Previous brain imaging studies have provided important information about the neuroanatomical regions that are involved in form-specif

The occipital lobes were obtained after death from six adult subjects with monocular visual loss. Flat-mounts were processed for cytochrome oxidase (CO) to reveal metabolic activity in the primary (V1) and secondary (V2) visual cortices. Mean V1 surface area was 2643 mm2 (range, 1986-3477 mm2). Ocular dominance columns were present in all cases, having a mean width of 863 microm. There were 78-126 column pairs along the V1 perimeter. Human column patterns were highly variable, but in at least one person they resembled a scaled-up version of macaque columns. CO patches in the upper layers were

We hypothesized the coordinate induction of mitochondrial regulatory genes in the hypertrophied right ventricle to sustain mitochondrial respiratory capacity and contractile function in response to increased load. Wistar rats were exposed to hypobaric hypoxia (11% O(2)) or normoxia for 2 wk. Cardiac contractile and mitochondrial respiratory function were separately assessed for the right and left ventricles. Transcript levels of several mitochondrial regulators were measured. A robust hypertrophic response was observed in the right (but not left) ventricle in response to hypobaric hypoxia. Mit

We describe the first systematic functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) measurements of visual field maps in macaque visual cortex. The boundaries of visual areas V1, V2, V3, V3A, V4, MT/V5, and TEO/V4A were identified using stimuli that create traveling waves of activity in retinotopically organized areas of the visual cortex. Furthermore, these stimuli were used to measure the dimensions of the representations of the central 11 degrees in V1-V3, quantitative visual field eccentricity functions for V1-V3 and MT, and the distribution of foveal and peripheral signals within the occipital

We studied visual representation in the parietal cortex by recording whole-scalp neuromagnetic responses to luminance stimuli of varying eccentricities. The stimuli were semicircles (5.5 degrees in radius) presented at horizontal eccentricities from 0 degree to 16 degrees, separately in the right and left hemifields. All stimuli evoked responses in the contralateral occipital and medial parietal areas. The waveforms and distributions of the occipital responses varied with stimulus side (left, right) and eccentricity, whereas the parietal responses were remarkably similar to all stimuli. The eq

The relationship between brain activity and reading performance was examined to test the hypothesis that dyslexia involves a deficit in a specific visual pathway known as the magnocellular (M) pathway. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to measure brain activity in dyslexic and control subjects in conditions designed to preferentially stimulate the M pathway. Dyslexics showed reduced activity compared with controls both in the primary visual cortex and in a secondary cortical visual area (MT+) that is believed to receive a strong M pathway input. Most importantly, significant corre

In the search for human neural correlates of visual awareness, cortical magnetic responses to coherent and meaningful objects were compared with responses to disorganized and meaningless non-objects when observers tried to detect the coherent objects. Three brief stimulus durations were included to vary the detection rate of the objects. Of the multiple brain regions activated, only the right lateral occipital cortex showed signals correlating with the proportion of correct object detections. The results suggest an important role for this area in visual awareness of objects.

Afferent connections of rat primary visual cortex (area 17 or V1 area) and the rostral and caudal parts of areas 18a and 18b were studied, by placing in each of the areas, small electrophoretic injections of enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP) or wheat germ agglutinated-HRP. The results indicate that: 1) each of the areas has a distinct pattern of distribution of afferent neurons in the ipsilateral visual thalamus - area 17 receives its principal thalamic input from the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus, the caudal parts of areas 18a and 18b receive a major thalamic input from the lateral post

UNLABELLED: Self-disorder is a hallmark characteristic of schizophrenia. This deficit may stem from an inability to efficiently integrate multisensory bodily signals. Twenty-nine schizophrenia patients and thirty-one healthy controls underwent resting-state fMRI in this study. A data-driven method, functional connectivity density mapping (FCD), was used to investigate cortical functional connectivity changes in the patients. Areas with significantly different FCD were chosen to calculate functional connectivity maps. The schizophrenia patients exhibited increased local FCD in frontal areas whi

BACKGROUND: Although no more traumatic stimuli exists, a variety of symptoms are persisting in chronic Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) patients. It is therefore necessary to explore the spontaneous brain activity of treatment-naïve PTSD patients during resting-state.
METHOD: Seventeen treatment-naïve PTSD patients and twenty traumatized controls were recruited and underwent a resting functional magnetic resonance imaging (Rs-fMRI) scan. The differences of regional brain spontaneous activity between the participants with and without PTSD were measured by Amplitude of Low-frequency fluctua

Natural environments contain behaviorally relevant information along many stimulus dimensions, each of which sensory systems must encode in order to guide behaviors. For example, the mammalian visual cortex encodes features of visual scenes such as spatial information related to object identity and temporal information about the motion of those objects in space. In order to reliably encode these behaviorally relevant visual features, neural representations should be robust to changes in environmental conditions. Further, information about changes in environmental conditions, such as the lumina

Objects in real-world scenes are often poorly or partially visible, for example because they are occluded or appear in the periphery. An additional challenge of real-world vision is that it is dynamic, causing the appearance of objects (e.g., their size and orientation) to change as we move. Notably, however, these changes are predictable from the three-dimensional structure of the surrounding scene. In two functional magnetic resonance imaging studies, we find that the visual cortex dynamically updates object representations using this predictive contextual information. First, visual cortical

Neural activity in sensory cortex is modulated by behavioral and cognitive factors, and this modulation is thought to contribute to the selection of specific sensory information needed to achieve behavioral goals. In contrast, more abstract behavioral variables that are independent of stimulus selection, such as stimulus-response mapping, are thought to be encoded by neurons outside of sensory cortex. We show that information about such mapping is robustly encoded in the responses of neurons in primate visual cortex. Monkeys were trained to alternate between two tasks that differed in the rule

Listening to natural auditory scenes leads to distinct neuronal activity patterns in the early visual cortex (EVC) of blindfolded sighted and congenitally blind participants.1,2 This pattern of sound decoding is organized by eccentricity, with the accuracy of auditory information increasing from foveal to far peripheral retinotopic regions in the EVC (V1, V2, and V3). This functional organization by eccentricity is predicted by primate anatomical connectivity,3,4 where cortical feedback projections from auditory and other non-visual areas preferentially target the periphery of early visual are

The retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) receive different combinations of L, M, and S cone inputs and give rise to one achromatic and two chromatic postreceptoral channels. The goal of the current study was to determine temporal sensitivity across the three postreceptoral channels in subcortical and cortical regions involved in human vision. We measured functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) responses at 7 T from three participants (two males, one female) viewing a high-contrast, flickering, spatially uniform wide field (∼140°). Stimulus flicker frequency varied logarithmically between 2 and 6

INTRODUCTION: Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA), a visual variant of Alzheimer's disease, initially manifests with higher-order visual disorders and parieto/temporo-occipital atrophy. Recent studies have shown remote functional impairment in both distant brain networks and along the calcarine sulcus (V1). Functional alteration in the calcarine differs along its length, reflecting center to periphery visual space differences. Herein, we aim to connect between these two sets of findings by looking at the retinotopic patterns of functional connectivity between large-scale brain networks and V1, co
