Comparison of visual acuity measurements and Purkinje's vessel shadow perception for prediction of postoperative visual acuity in different ophthalmological diseases.

PURPOSE: Prediction of postoperative visual acuity (VA) is extremely important to the patient and highly relevant to the surgeon. However, objective evaluation of the macula is frequently impossible in cases such as mature cataract, cataract in high myopia or vitreous haemorrhage. This study compares different preoperative examination techniques used to predict postoperative VA. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the charts of all patients who underwent any of the following procedures at our hospital in 2004: phacoemulsification for mature cataract or cataract in high myopia; vitrectomy fo

Pattern of Visual-Motor Integration, Visual Perception, and Fine Motor Coordination Abilities in Children Being Assessed for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Motor skill assessment is part of the fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) multidisciplinary assessment. Some clinicians opt to exclude assessment of the subcomponents of visual-motor integration (visual perception and motor coordination), on the assumption that challenges will be revealed based on the assessment of visual-motor integration. The objective is to describe the visual-motor integration, visual perception, and fine motor coordination pattern of abilities in children with confirmed prenatal alcohol exposure being assessed for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. METHODS: T

Relationship between reaction time, fine motor control, and visual-spatial perception on vigilance and visual-motor tasks in 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome (22q11DS) is a common microdeletion disorder associated with mild to moderate intellectual disability and specific neurocognitive deficits, particularly in visual-motor and attentional abilities. Currently there is evidence that the visual-motor profile of 22q11DS is not entirely mediated by intellectual disability and that these individuals have specific deficits in visual-motor integration. However, the extent to which attentional deficits, such as vigilance, influence impairments on visual motor tasks in 22q11DS is unclear. This study examines visual-motor abilitie

Affective priming through Indian ragas: influence on perception of ambiguous visual stimuli and creativity.

Indian ragas have captivated a sustained scholarly interest over the past few years owing to their capacity to evoke emotional, therapeutic and physiological benefits. A conspicuous research gap persists: ragas have seldom been examined as an affective prime; their unconscious influence on subsequent perception, behavior, and creativity remains unexplored and antecedent research into music and creativity has predominantly been confined to background music only. This research endeavored to ascertain whether ragas of two contrasting emotional valences of happiness and sadness unconsciously influ

Visual Perception of 3D Shape: From Local 2D Image Measurements to 3D Surface Properties.

Inferring 3D surface structure is one of the most fundamental functions of vision. There are many well-known depth cues, such as shading, texture, and highlights. However, how these cues are extracted from images-and what exactly they tell the brain about 3D shape-is not fully understood. Here, we describe how these seemingly distinct 3D shape cues could share a common currency for the first stages of shape estimation. The key insight is that when patterns such as shading or texture are projected from a 3D object into the 2D retinal image, they are spatially distorted, with profound consequenc

Lightweight Semantic Perception from UAV-Borne Visual Sensors via Conflict-Suppressed Heterogeneous Expert Distillation.

UAV-borne visual sensors provide high-resolution aerial observations for low-altitude scene understanding, urban monitoring, traffic observation, emergency inspection, and infrastructure assessment. However, semantic perception from UAV visual sensor data remains challenging because aerial images often contain dense small objects, elongated road structures, fragmented boundaries, scale variations caused by flight-altitude changes, oblique viewpoints, and strict onboard or edge computational constraints. To address these challenges, this paper proposes MEKD-UAVSeg, a lightweight semantic percep

Cortical vestibular-visual interactions and cross-modal plasticity-adaptive neural processes for stable perception.

The integration of vestibular and visual signals is essential for spatial orientation, self-motion perception, and postural stability. However, sensory conflicts and environmental changes demand adaptive neural mechanisms to maintain perceptual reliability. Cross-modal plasticity provides a key mechanism for this adaptation by dynamically recalibrating sensory representations in response to discordant or altered inputs. In this review, we summarize the cortical pathways underlying vestibular and visual processing, discuss how multisensory integration and segregation are implemented through dis

Perception of audio-visual synchrony is modulated by walking speed and step-cycle phase.

Investigating sensory processes in active human observers is critical for a holistic understanding of perception. Recent research shows that locomotion can rhythmically alter visual detection performance, illustrating how natural behaviours influence sensory processing. Here, we tested whether the speed and phase of locomotion also modulate temporal perception, focusing on the perceived synchrony of supra-threshold audio-visual stimuli. Participants made synchrony judgements over a range of stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) while walking at either slow or natural walking speeds. Slow walking

Prefrontal-Dependent and Gender-Specific Modulation of Guilt Emotion on Human Early Visual Perception.

Negative emotions can shape human visual perception, which is mainly investigated using basic emotions such as fear. Whether guilt emotion, which is a negative moral emotion originating late in our evolutionary ancestry, has similar modulatory effects as basic emotions is largely unexplored. Here, we employed a dot estimation task to induce feelings of guilt and subsequently measured the Ebbinghaus illusion strength. The photos of victims' faces were projected on the central circle of the Ebbinghaus configuration. The results showed that guilt significantly strengthened the illusion effect rel

The effects of acute alcohol intake on endogenous vs. exogenous attention in visual perception.

Acute alcohol consumption is known to impair visual perception, yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Visual perception is influenced by visual attention, which comprises two distinct components: endogenous (voluntary) and exogenous (involuntary) attention. This study investigated how a moderate alcohol dose alters attentional modulation of visual perception. Participants performed an orientation discrimination task, reporting the tilt of a peripheral Gabor patch target. Valid, neutral, or invalid precues-central (endogenous) or peripheral (exogenous)-were presented to manipu

Using network science to examine audio-visual speech perception with a multi-layer graph.

To examine visual speech perception (i.e., lip-reading), we created a multi-layer network (the AV-net) that contained: (1) an auditory layer with nodes representing phonological word-forms and edges connecting words that were phonologically related, and (2) a visual layer with nodes representing the viseme representations of words and edges connecting viseme representations that differed by a single viseme (and additional edges to connect related nodes in the two layers). The results of several computer simulations (in which activation diffused across the network to simulate word identificatio

Investigating Visual Perception Impairments through Serious Games and Eye Tracking to Anticipate Handwriting Difficulties.

Dysgraphia is a learning disability that causes handwritten production below expectations. Its diagnosis is delayed until the completion of handwriting development. To allow a preventive training program, abilities not directly related to handwriting should be evaluated, and one of them is visual perception. To investigate the role of visual perception in handwriting skills, we gamified standard clinical visual perception tests to be played while wearing an eye tracker at three difficulty levels. Then, we identified children at risk of dysgraphia through the means of a handwriting speed test.

Remediation of Allophonic Perception and Visual Attention Span in Developmental Dyslexia: A Joint Assay.

Categorical perception of phonemes and visual attention span are cognitive processes that contribute independently to poor reading skills in developmental dyslexia. We here explored whether training programs specifically targeting one or the other process do improve reading performance in dyslexic children. The dyslexic participants were trained using either the RapDys© program designed to improve phonemic perception or the MAEVA© program targeting visual attention span. Each participant was provided the two programs successively for intensive training. Results show specific effects of RapDys©
