Cross-situational statistically based word learning intervention for late-talking toddlers.

PURPOSE: To explore the efficacy of a word learning intervention for late-talking toddlers that is based on principles of cross-situational statistical learning. METHODS: Four late-talking toddlers were individually provided with 7-10 weeks of bi-weekly word learning intervention that incorporated principles of cross-situational statistical learning. Treatment was input-based meaning that, aside from initial probes, children were not asked to produce any language during the sessions. Pre-intervention data included parent-reported measures of productive vocabulary and language samples. Data co

Executive functions in deaf and hearing children: The mediating role of language skills in inhibitory control.

This study aimed to analyze one of the critical components of inhibitory control-the ability to suppress interference-in deaf and hearing children and to investigate the mediating role of language skills in this central component of executive functions. To this end, a cross-sectional study was carried out with 40 deaf children with and without cochlear implants (CIs) and 21 hearing children age 7-10 years. The ability to suppress interference was assessed with the children's version of the Attentional Network Test (child-ANT), and language skills were assessed with a computerized version of th

The relationship between phonological processing skills and word and nonword identification performance in children with mild intellectual disabilities.

Word and nonword identification skills were examined in a sample of 80 elementary school age students with mild intellectual disabilities and mixed etiologies who were described as struggling to learn to read by their teachers. Performance on measures of receptive and expressive vocabulary, measures of phonological awareness, and measures of word and nonword identification were included for analyses. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that, after controlling for chronological age and vocabulary knowledge, phonological processing accounted for a large and significant amount of unique va

Little time travelers: Future thinking and temporal language in the second year of life.

Episodic future thinking-the ability to anticipate and prepare for future events-is a central component of mental time travel. Although most research on episodic future thinking has focused on preschool-aged children, much less is known about its earliest emergence in toddlerhood. The present study investigated whether precursors of episodic future thinking, such as future-oriented object selection, can be observed in the second year of life and whether this ability is associated with temporal language use beyond general vocabulary. Eighty-one typically developing Polish toddlers (M = 22.04 mo

Follow-up of expressive language and general development at 12, 18 and 36 months for children with no canonical babbling at 10 months.

Little is known about the developmental trajectories in children who do not use canonical babbling (CB) at 10 months. The aim was to examine how speech, language, cognitive and motor abilities developed in children without CB. For 15 children identified as not having CB, consonant production, expressive vocabulary and general development were assessed at 12, 18 and 36 months from audio-video recordings. Twelve (79%) children still lacked CB at 12 months. At 18 months, six (40%) had parent-reported expressive vocabulary results below the 10th percentile, and two (14%) did not use dental/alveola

Association Between Symbolic Play and Language: A Comparison Between Typically Developing Children and Children with Down Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Language and symbolic play require the same underlying symbolic ability and develop parallel to one another. The aim of this study was to determine the association between symbolic play and vocabulary in typically developing children and children with Down syndrome in Malaysia. METHODS: Twenty-five typically developing children and 25 children with Down syndrome aged between 12 and 36 months were involved in this study. They were recruited from an early intervention center and various kindergartens from the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Their play skills were assessed using th

The effects of book exposure and reading interest on oral language skills of children with and without a familial risk of dyslexia.

The potential role of home literacy environment (HLE) in children's language development has been widely studied. However, data on the HLE of children with familial risk (FR) of dyslexia are limited. In this longitudinal study, we examined (a) whether amount of book exposure and reading interest at age 4 were different in samples of Norwegian FR and no FR-children, respectively, (b) whether these home literacy-related factors exerted different effects depending on family-risk status on vocabulary and grammar skills at school entry age (6 years) and (c) whether they contributed independently to

Reading comprehension skills of young adults with childhood diagnoses of dyslexia.

This study explores the contribution of cognitive processes to comprehension skills in adults who suffered from childhood developmental dyslexia (CD). The performance of adults with CD (ages 17 to 23), chronological age-matched (CA) adults, and reading level-matched (RL) children was compared on measures of phonological processing, naming speed, working memory (WM), general knowledge, vocabulary, and comprehension. The results showed that adults with CD scored lower on measures of phonological processing, naming speed, WM, general knowledge, and vocabulary when compared to CA readers but were

Novel Neurocognitive Profile in a Minority of Boys with 47,XXY (Klinefelter Syndrome).

INTRODUCTION: 47,XXY, also known as Klinefelter syndrome, is the most commonly occurring sex chromosomal variation (1:660). The neurocognitive profile of boys with 47,XXY, in addition to verbal abilities, language skills, and general intelligence, has been explored in this study. METHODS: Fifty-five participants with 47,XXY were segregated into groups according to their performance on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC): (1) those with a higher performance intelligence quotient (PIQ) in comparison with their verbal IQ (VIQ) and (2) those with a higher VIQ compared with their P

Lexicogrammatical skills in 2-year-old children with and without repaired cleft palate.

The purpose of the current research was to compare the lexical-grammatical skills of two-year-old children with and without repaired cleft palate (CP), accounting for the effect of variables such as vocabulary size at 18 months of age, maternal education level, and gender. Participants included 52 children with CP and 25 typically developing (TD) children. The CDI-WS was employed to measure vocabulary and grammatical skills. Significant differences were observed between the CP and TD groups with respect to the number of words, word forms (irregular nouns and verbs), word endings (overuse of pl

Screen Use and Children's Language Development From Ages 5 to 7 Years.

IMPORTANCE: Concerns about screen use and early language development are widespread, and prior research has reported mixed findings. Many studies have not distinguished baseline differences from developmental change, leaving uncertainty about whether screen use is associated with actual language development in early childhood. OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between children's and parental screen use and children's language development from ages 5 to 7 years. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based prospective cohort study included children recruited through municipalitie

Development of a 3-Step theory of suicide ontology to facilitate 3ST factor extraction from clinical progress notes.

OBJECTIVE: Suicide risk prediction algorithms at the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) do not include predictors based on the 3-Step Theory of suicide (3ST), which builds on hopelessness, psychological pain, connectedness, and capacity for suicide. These four factors are not available from structured fields in VHA electronic health records, but they are found in unstructured clinical text. An ontology and controlled vocabulary that maps psychosocial and behavioral terms to these factors does not exist. The objectives of this study were 1) to develop an ontology with a controlled vocabulary

Academic verb knowledge of DHH college students and their hearing peers.

This study addressed the critical gap in research on the academic English vocabulary knowledge of deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students at the college level, with a specific focus on academic English verbs. An English vocabulary test was developed to assess knowledge of academic verbs at three distinct corpus-defined lexical frequency ranges. The test was administered to the DHH students along with two comparison groups of college peers-students of English as an Additional Language (EAL)1 and hearing native-English-speaking students. Results revealed near-ceiling performance by hearing nativ

Intervention focus moderates the association between initial receptive language and language outcomes for toddlers with developmental delay.

This ex-post facto study reanalyzed data from Romski et al. to examine whether intervention focus moderated the relationship between pre-intervention standardized measures of receptive language and post-intervention standardized measures of receptive and expressive language age and observations of expressive target vocabulary size. In all, 62 toddlers with developmental delay were randomly assigned to augmented communication-input (AC-I), augmented communication-output (AC-O), or spoken communication (SC) interventions. AC-I provided augmented language input via spoken language and a speech-ge
