Effects of an extended version of the lee silverman voice treatment on voice and speech in Parkinson's disease.

PURPOSE: The present study examined vocal SPL, voice handicap, and speech characteristics in Parkinson's disease (PD) following an extended version of the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT), to help determine whether current treatment dosages can be altered without compromising clinical outcomes. METHOD: Twelve participants with idiopathic PD received the extended treatment version (LSVT-X), similar to LSVT except that it was administered twice a week in 1-hr sessions over 8 weeks and required substantially more home practice. Recordings were made in a sound-treated booth immediately before

[Voice therapy according to Smith. Comments on the accent method of treating voice and speech disorders].

The accent method (A.M.) is based on the myoelastic and aerodynamic phonatory theory. The aim of the respiration exercises is to establish a predominantly abdominal respiration. Following the exercises of accentuated phonatory pulsations, patients work on reading special texts designed to enable them to become aware of the accentuated or unaccentuated sections. The AM is based on a holistic understanding of the voice and of speech. Whilst the exercise of AM is linked to a physiological phenomenon, such as phonatory aerodynamics and muscular function, the method is to be understood as a therapy

Voice Signatures of Momentary Psychological Stress in Real-Life Environments: Results from the Colive Voice Study.

INTRODUCTION: Voice is hypothesized to be modulated by stress and thus could be used as a potential stress detection and monitoring solution. In the literature, vocal biomarkers for stress have mostly been developed on experimental data, with limited samples. Therefore, this study aimed to present insights into the effect of momentary psychological stress on voice in real-life recordings, across different languages, genders, and vocal tasks. METHODS: Participants from the Colive Voice study reported their stress level on a 1 to 5 Likert scale. Two tasks were performed: a text reading task and

Mapping Schema Modes in Voice Hearers: Investigating the Role of Schema Modes in Voice Hearers' Experience.

Auditory verbal hallucinations, or hearing voices, occur across various mental health conditions and can vary widely in distress and content. Understanding the factors that influence these experiences is essential for effective therapy. Schema therapy, particularly its concept of schema modes, offers a framework to explore how emotional states and coping strategies shape the nature and distress of voice hearing. Despite this, there is limited research on the relationship between schema modes and voice-hearing experiences. This study aimed to address this gap by developing a schema mode profile

Voice Characteristics and Parent-Reported Voice Handicap in Children With Mucopolysaccharidosis: A Pilot Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are inherited lysosomal storage disorders characterized by glycosaminoglycan accumulation and multisystem involvement. Ear, nose, and throat manifestations are common and may appear early; however, pediatric voice characteristics in MPS remain under-described. OBJECTIVE: To compare acoustic and cepstral voice measures, maximum phonation time (MPT), and parent-reported voice-related handicap (Pediatric Voice Handicap Index-pVHI) between children with MPS and age- and sex-matched typically developing peers, and to describe upper-airway and laryngeal mucos

Objective Voice Analysis in Partial Deafness: Comparison of Multi-Dimensional Voice Program (MDVP) and VOXplot Results.

Acoustic analysis of voice enables objective assessment of voice to diagnose changes in voice characteristics, and track the progress of therapy. In contrast to subjective assessment, objective measurements provide mathematical results referring to specific parameters and can be analyzed statistically. Changes in the voice of patients with partial deafness (PD) were not widely described in the literature, and recent studies referred to the voice parameters measured in this group of patients only using the multi-dimensional voice program (MDVP) by Kay Pentax. This paper describes the results of

A Comprehensive Application for Grading Severity of Voice Based on Acoustic Voice Quality Index v.02.03.

Acoustic Voice Quality Index is a six-variable acoustic model for the multiparametric measurement developed by Maryn et al. Studies have provided evidence regarding the practical usefullness, internal consistency, external validity, diagnostic accuracy, and responsiveness to change of AVQI. Recently, researchers have been exploring the utility of AVQI in classifying the voice severity. The aim of the present study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of the AVQI v.02.03 in discriminating across the perceptual levels of dysphonia severity in 18-40 years age range in Kannada speaking populat

The 2016 G. Paul Moore Lecture: Lessons in Voice Rehabilitation: Journal of Voice and Clinical Practice.

This Paul Moore Lecture honors the contributions made by authors to the Journal of Voice during a period of 30 years, from 1987. Fifty articles were selected and included under the following five topics: (1) normalcy of the larynx and voice; (2) the clinical speech-language pathologist's evaluation; (3) the patient's perspective; (4) the core of vocal rehabilitation; and (5) behavioral versus organic dysphonias. The analysis reflects a vivid landscape of the specific area and significant advances in knowledge. It also shows the valuable interdependence between science and clinical practice. Th

The Norwegian Voice Handicap Index (VHI-N) patient scores are dependent on voice-related disease group.

The aim of this study is to determine to what extent the Voice Handicap Index-Norwegian (VHI-N) is scored depending on specific laryngological disease. In a multi-center study, 126 healthy subjects and 355 patients with different voice-related diseases answered the VHI-N. The VHI-N scores showed high Cronbach's alpha. Analyses of variance were performed with VHI-N dependent and specific voice-related disease as independent variable, and showed highly significant dependence by group allocation (F(7,461) = 28.0; p < 0.001). When studying post hoc analyses secondary to this ANOVA analysis, we hav

Collaboration and conquest: MTD as viewed by voice teacher (singing voice specialist) and speech-language pathologist.

This study was designed as a qualitative case study to demonstrate the process of diagnosis and treatment between a voice team to manage a singer diagnosed with muscular tension dysphonia (MTD). Traditionally, literature suggests that MTD is challenging to treat and little in the literature directly addresses singers with MTD. Data collected included initial medical screening with laryngologist, referral to speech-language pathologist (SLP) specializing in voice disorders among singers, and adjunctive voice training with voice teacher trained in vocology (singing voice specialist or SVS). Botulinum neurotoxin for management of intractable central leakage through a voice prosthesis in surgical voice restoration.

Rehabilitation of voice and speech after total laryngectomy has become established practice in recent years. A voice prosthesis is placed within a surgically produced fistula between the trachea and upper oesophagus and acts as a one way valve, allowing passage of pulmonary air from the trachea into the oesophagus and preventing aspiration of food and fluid from the oesophagus into the trachea. Persistent leakage through or around these prostheses is a recognized complication, the aetiology of which can vary widely, from mechanical issues with the prostheses themselves to anatomical and physio

The Nijdam voice prosthesis: a self-retaining valveless voice prosthesis for vocal rehabilitation after total laryngectomy.

Voice prosthesis-assisted speech rehabilitation after total laryngectomy has proven to be successful in the majority of patients and exceeds the results of traditional oesophageal speech. Nevertheless 10-30% failure rates are still reported. In part this is due to prosthesis-related problems, in particular ingrowth of Candida species in the valve-bearing parts of the devices. A new indwelling, low-resistance and valveless voice prosthesis is described; the Nijdam voice prosthesis. The device has an average device lifetime of 19 weeks which appears to be superior to other indwelling voice prost

Relations between voice range profiles and physiological and perceptual voice characteristics in ten-year-old children.

Pitch and intensity range of 60 children were recorded and plotted in voice range profiles (VRPs). Different aspects were investigated: minimum phonation threshold, pitch range, and maximum dynamic range. Vocal fold status was determined via laryngoscopic examination. Ten percent of the children had vocal nodules, 23% glottal chinks. Seven voice experts listened to the voices recorded on two separate occasions and rated their properties along 16 parameters including hoarseness. Fourteen percent were rated as hoarse on both recordings and were thus classified as being chronically hoarse. Depart

Does mindfulness help employees express ethical voice? a moderated mediation model of mindfulness and ethical voice.

Following a series of major ethical scandals in various organizations, researchers have increasingly sought to understand the role of ethical voice in the workplace. Existing ethical voice research centres on leadership-focused models and overlooks the individual psychological mechanisms connecting traits to ethical voice, creating a key gap in understanding the micro-foundations of such behaviour. The results of a longitudinal field study featuring 453 participants from one Chinese firm were used to investigate the model hypothesized in this research. The results reveal that employee mindfuln

Acoustic and Sentiment Analyses for Voice and Life Quality Characterisation After Medical Intervention in Voice Pathologies.

Standardised questionnaires for dysphonic patients allow clinicians to understand the psychophysiological response to medical intervention. Self-reports, however, cannot encompass all possible aspects of living with a voice disorder; they may not be adequate for certain professionals or pathologies, and they are time-consuming. This study proposes a combined approach of sentiment and acoustic analyses to investigate patients' states of mind and vocal quality, along with their possible interrelationship, before and after clinical treatment. Twenty-six patients completed a free speech task pre-
