Between-rater reliability of the 6-minute walk test, berg balance scale, and handheld dynamometry in people with multiple sclerosis.

This study investigated the between-rater reliability of the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), 6-Minute Walk test (6MW), and handheld dynamometry (HHD) in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Previous studies that examined BBS and 6MW reliability in people with MS have not used more than two raters, or analyzed different mobility levels separately. The reliability of HHD has not been previously reported for people with MS. In this study, five physical therapists assessed eight people with MS using the BBS, 6MW, and HHD, resulting in 12 pairs of data. Data were analyzed using intraclass correlation coe

Validation of the Polar Fitness Test for Estimation of Maximal Oxygen Consumption at Rest in Medically Supervised Exercise Training: Comparison with CPET and the 6-Minute Walk Test.

The Polar Fitness Test (PFT) estimates maximal oxygen consumption (V̇O2max) under resting conditions using heart rate data from the manufacturer's wearable devices. We aimed to validate the PFT in a population with cardiovascular risk factors and to compare its results with five established equations predicting V̇O2max based on the 6-min walk test (6MWT). Twenty-four participants (9 female; age 57.4 ± 10.2 years) undergoing medically supervised exercise training-including seven individuals on heart rate-limiting medication-completed the PFT, 6MWT, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), w

Concurrent validity of walking speed values calculated via the GAITRite electronic walkway and 3 meter walk test in the chronic stroke population.

The purpose of this study was to provide novel information regarding the concurrent validity (primary aim) and reliability (secondary aim) of walking speed (WS) calculated via the GAITRite electronic walkway system and 3 meter walk test (3MWT) in the chronic stroke population. The 3MWT is a feasible option for clinicians working in environments where space is limited. Psychometric properties of the test have not been established. Participants with chronic stroke were stratified into three groups: (1) household ambulators (HA) (self-selected WS < 0.4 m/s, 12 participants, 31 observations); (2)

Validity of the 10-s step test: prospective study comparing it with the 10-s grip and release test and the 30-m walking test.

Cervical compressive myelopathy (CCM) is one of the common neurological disorders seen in the geriatric population. The 10-s Grip and Release ("G and R") Test and the 30-m Walking ("Walking") Test are widely known as quantifiable physical assessments for the severity of cervical myelopathy. We developed the 10-s Step ("Step") Test as another easily performable quantifiable measure for this. However, it is not clear if the Step test can adequately reveal the severity of myelopathy like the other established tests, given its simple method. The purpose of this study was to verify the practical ef

Testing the limits: the impact of extreme functional hip width on the muscular demands of walking.

The obstetrical dilemma (OD) posits that hominin pelvic morphology reflects a trade-off between obstetric demands and efficient bipedal locomotion - wider pelves facilitate childbirth but increase mechanical demands on stabilizing muscles, potentially raising the energetic cost of walking. Several studies challenge this view, however, demonstrating no strong associations between pelvic width and increased energy expenditure, suggesting that musculoskeletal compensation minimizes locomotor costs via muscle coordination and posture dynamics. Because assessment of evolutionary constraints require

Usefulness of the instrumented timed up and go test for walking assessment in older adults.

PURPOSE: The Up and Go test is a widely used tool among physical therapists for assessing functional mobility. Advances in inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors enable the analysis not only of total walk duration but also of the duration of individual walk phases, as well as the determination of spatiotemporal and kinematic parameters for each phase. Consequently, the IMU-supported version of the test up and go, referred to as the instrumented up and go, enables a substantially more comprehensive analysis of locomotor patterns. The aim of this study was to evaluate the extent to which spatio

Functional assessment of patients with systemic sclerosis by the use of 'Six-minutes-walking-test'.

AIMS: Systemic Sclerosis (SS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the connective tissues, characterised by alterations in the functions and structures of the small blood vessels (capillaries and arterioles) and by modifications associated with the disposition of collagen in the tissues. One of the most frequent complication of the SS is the pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Aim of this study was to assess the various pathophysiological relationships betweens SS and PAH in order to establish whether the presence of this systemic disease can represent a risk factor. Evaluation of novel indices of walking performance taking oxygen desaturation into account during six-minute walk test in cardiovascular disease patients.

In pulmonary disease patients since oxygen desaturation during 6-min walk test (6MWT) affects walk distance (6MWD), some novel indices such as desaturation/distance ratio [DDR, oxygen desaturation area (DAO2)/6MWD] and distance-saturation product [DSP, 6MWD × minimum peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2)] are evaluated. However, there has been no study examining these indices that consider exercise-induced desaturation (EID) in patients with cardiovascular disease. In 94 cardiovascular disease patients without pulmonary complications, 6MWT and echocardiography were performed at the entry of card

Brisk walking can be a maximal effort in heart failure patients: a comparison of cardiopulmonary exercise and 6 min walking test cardiorespiratory data.

AIMS: Cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) and 6 min walking test (6MWT) are frequently used in heart failure (HF). CPET is a maximal exercise, whereas 6MWT is a self-selected constant load test usually considered a submaximal, and therefore safer, exercise, but this has not been tested previously. The aim of this study was to compare the cardiorespiratory parameters collected during CPET and 6MWT in a large group of healthy subjects and patients with HF of different severity. METHODS AND RESULTS: Subjects performed a standard maximal CPET and a 6MWT wearing a portable device allowing breath-

School-based predictive contributors to six-minute walk test performance across pubertal stages: an explainable machine learning study in Tunisian adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The six-minute walk test (6MWT) provides a practical measure of submaximal functional exercise capacity in adolescents and reflects the integrated response of cardiovascular, respiratory, and musculoskeletal systems during walking. Traditional age-based linear models inadequately capture nonlinear, maturation-dependent interactions among anthropometric, behavioral, and physiological factors. This study aimed to (i) identify stage-specific predictive contributors to 6MWT performance using supervised machine learning, (ii) improve interpretability through explainable artificial intel

Pulmonary function and physical fitness in obese children and adolescents: a comparison of impulse oscillometry, spirometry, and 6-min walk test.

UNLABELLED: Obesity-associated alterations in pulmonary function have been inconsistently identified by spirometry in pediatric populations. Impulse oscillometry (IOS) offers sensitive detection of peripheral airway resistance, yet data remain limited. Moreover, the relationship between obesity indices and pulmonary function has not been comprehensively evaluated. This study aimed to compare pulmonary function and physical fitness between obese and normal-weight children and adolescents using spirometry, IOS, and the 6-min walk test (6-MWT), and assessed obesity indices as predictors of pulmon
