Mental health and well-being in children and adolescents.

The guideline discusses the various milestones in typical neurodevelopment and the various checkpoints where atypical development can be picked up. There is also a remarkable influence of epigenetics and parenting on child development and well - being. It is also essential to establish effective communication to facilitate healthy child development. Well being in children is largely impacted by schooling, curricular design, inclusivity, teacher training and awareness of newer developments, parent teacher interaction. A clinician must also be well acquainted with the National Education Program

[Myalgia during warming-up in a 12-year-old boy].

INTRODUCTION: McArdle disease is a hereditary myopathy caused by muscle phosphorylase deficiency. Patients experience painful muscle cramps after strenuous exercise; the condition is sometimes associated with rhabdomyolysis, myoglobinuria and resulting acute renal failure. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 12-year-old boy visited the Paediatric and Neurology outpatients' departments with symptoms of leg myalgia, occurring during the warming-up phase of soccer practice, which disappeared after a short rest. Detailed history-taking revealed that he already experienced pain while walking during early childhoo

Cold weather training: a risk factor for Achilles paratendinitis among recruits.

In a prospective study of risk factors for Achilles tendinopathy among four induction cycles of infantry recruits, 95 out of 1405 recruits, (6.8%) were found to suffer from Achilles tendinopathy. In more than 94% of the cases, the tendinopathy was considered to be paratendinitis. Training season had a statistically significant effect on the incidence of Achilles paratendinitis with 3.6% suffering in the summer and 9.4% in the winter (p = .001). This increased risk for Achilles paratendinitis in cold weather outdoor training can be explained by a fall in temperature of the Achilles paratenon wh

Impingement syndrome in the athletic shoulder.

The repetitive overhead use of the arm required by many sports may lead to impingement in the vulnerable avascular region of the supraspinatus and biceps tendons. The impingement syndrome may spill over at any time to involve the adjacent biceps tendon, subacromial bursa, and acromioclavicular joint and, as a continuum, with the passage of time, may eventuate in degeneration and partial, even complete thickness, rotator cuff tears later in life. Physical findings, particularly a positive impingement sign, confirm the diagnosis. In the young competing athlete, therapeutic measures consist of ca

Variability in Baseball Throwing Metrics During a Structured Long-Toss Program: Does One Size Fit All or Should Programs Be Individualized?

BACKGROUND: The variability of throwing metrics, particularly elbow torque and ball velocity, during structured long-toss programs is unknown. HYPOTHESES: (1) Elbow torque and ball velocity would increase as throwers progressed through a structured long-toss program and (2) intrathrower reliability would be high while interthrower reliability would be variable. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 3. METHODS: Sixty healthy high school and collegiate pitchers participated in a structured long-toss program while wearing a validated inertial measurement unit, w

Acute Ketone Monoester Supplementation Impairs 20-min Time-Trial Performance in Trained Cyclists: A Randomized, Crossover Trial.

Acute ketone monoester (KE) supplementation can alter exercise responses, but the performance effect is unclear. The limited and equivocal data to date are likely related to factors including the KE dose, test conditions, and caliber of athletes studied. We tested the hypothesis that mean power output during a 20-min cycling time trial (TT) would be different after KE ingestion compared to a placebo (PL). A sample size of 22 was estimated to provide 80% power to detect an effect size dz of 0.63 at an alpha level of .05 with a two-tailed paired t test. This determination considered 2.0% as the

An Island Rash: A Case Study of Exercise-Induced Vasculitis.

Exercise-induced vasculitis, also known as the Disney rash or Golfer's vasculitis, is a benign, self-limiting, cutaneous small vessel vasculitis that can develop following prolonged physical activity, especially in hot weather. A 65-year-old female teacher with obesity, diabetes, and dyslipidemia contacted her family physician via email regarding a one-day history of a bilateral lower limb rash. Her medications included metformin and atorvastatin. While vacationing in Madeira, she developed an erythematous, petechial rash above the ankles, circumferentially distributed, following prolonged wal

Effect of different sports drink compositions on endurance performance and substrate oxidation: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study in trained athletes.

BACKGROUND: The consumption of sports drinks before, during, and after endurance exercise is a common practice among athletes. These drinks typically contain a variety of components, each of which has been shown to offer individual benefits. However, the combined effects of these components, as formulated in many sports drinks, have not been thoroughly investigated. This study aims to evaluate the impact of typical sports drink components on endurance performance, perceived exertion, and carbohydrate and fat metabolism, using a sequential additive design. METHODS: Twelve healthy, trained endu

Study to Weigh the Effect of Exercise Training on BONE quality and strength (SWEET BONE) in type 2 diabetes: study protocol for a randomised clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is associated with an increased fracture risk despite normal-to-increased bone mineral density, suggesting reduced bone quality. Exercise may be effective in reducing fracture risk by ameliorating muscle dysfunction and reducing risk of fall, though it is unclear whether it can improve bone quality. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The 'Study to Weigh the Effect of Exercise Training on BONE quality and strength (SWEET BONE) in T2D' is an open-label, assessor-blinded, randomised clinical trial comparing an exercise training programme of 2-year duration, specifically de
