Memory impairments identified in people at ultra-high risk for psychosis who later develop first-episode psychosis.

OBJECTIVE: While cognitive deficits are frequently reported in psychotic disorders, it is unclear whether these impairments predate the onset of illness and to what extent they are predictive of later transition to psychosis. METHOD: The authors studied 37 healthy volunteers and 98 symptomatic, help-seeking patients meeting the inclusion criteria of a treatment program for people at ultra-high risk for psychosis. Of the ultra-high-risk patients, 34 (34.7%) developed psychosis over the course of the investigation. Premorbid and current IQ, attention, memory, and executive functioning were meas

Association between adolescent alcohol use and cognitive function in young adulthood: A co-twin comparison study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Studies on adolescent alcohol use and cognition are often unable to separate the potential causal effects of alcohol use on cognition from shared etiological influences, including genetic influences or other substance use comorbidities also known to be associated with cognition, such as nicotine use. The present study aimed to fill this gap and clarify the relationship between adolescent alcohol use and young adult cognition by accounting for both measured and unmeasured confounders. DESIGN: A random effects model accounting for nesting in families was used to control for

The Effects of Combining Sensory Integrative Techniques With Direct Reading Comprehension on Improving Working Memory and Attention Span in Students With Developmental Dyslexia.

One of the most important theories proposed in the explanation and etiology of dyslexia are theories that consider the cognitive deficits of these children, including attention, working memory, planning and organization to be involved in the occurrence of this disability. The aim was to investigate the effects of combining sensory integrative techniques with direct reading comprehension on improving working memory and attention span in students with Developmental dyslexia. This randomized trial with blinded assessors study was performed with a between-subjects factor 'group' (control group vs.

Longitudinal MRI identifies associations between cognitive decline, inflammatory markers, and hippocampal subregion volumes in individuals with knee osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is common in older adults and may relate to cognitive decline. We explore whether changes in specific brain areas and body inflammation levels help explain this connection, focusing on the hippocampus-a memory-critical brain region. METHODS: We studied 36 older adults with KOA over time. Using brain scans, we measured volumes of hippocampal subregions (especially the fimbria). Blood tests tracked six inflammation markers, including brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), programmed death 1(PD-1), recombinant cannabinoid recepto

The Effect of Brainwave Synchronization Using Binaural Beats on Improving Working Memory and Reducing the Severity of Symptoms in Women With Obsessive-compulsive Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Binaural beats are one of the new methods of brainwave synchronization. However, there is little knowledge about its clinical applications. The positive effect of this method on executive functions, such as attention and working memory, in the γ band has been mainly confirmed in healthy individuals. Still, its effectiveness on disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), with a prominent cognitive profile, has not been established. Therefore, the present study was conducted to examine the effect of binaural beats on working memory and the severity of OCD symptoms in the

Electroconvulsive Therapy Alone for Schizophrenia: A Meta-analysis of Randomized, Single-blind, Controlled Trials [RETRACTED].

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

PURPOSE: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a common treatment in practice for schizophrenia in most developing countries. This is a meta-analysis of the efficacy and safety of ECT alone versus antipsychotic (AP) monotherapy for schizophrenia using randomized, single-blind, controlled trial (RCT) data. METHODS: Two assessors independently extracted data. Standardized and weighted mean difference (SMD/WMD), odds ratios (ORs) ± 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and number needed to harm (NNH) were calculated by Review Manager Version 5.3 and the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis Version 2 software. Neurocognitive screening of lead-exposed andean adolescents and young adults.

This study was designed to assess the utility of two psychometric tests with putative minimal cultural bias for use in field screening of lead (Pb)-exposed Ecuadorian Andean workers. Specifically, the study evaluated the effectiveness in Pb-exposed adolescents and young adults of a nonverbal reasoning test standardized for younger children, and compared the findings with performance on a test of auditory memory. The Raven Coloured Progressive Matrices (RCPM) was used as a test of nonverbal intelligence, and the Digit Span subtest of the Wechsler IV intelligence scale was used to assess auditor

The Link between APOE4 Presence and Neuropsychological Test Performance among Mexican Americans and Non-Hispanic Whites of the Multiethnic Health & Aging Brain Study - Health Disparities Cohort.

INTRODUCTION: The APOEε4 allele is the single strongest genetic risk for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). Prior work demonstrates that not only the APOEε4 allele varies by race/ethnicity but also the risk for AD and cognitive impairment conveyed by the APOEε4 allele varies by the racial/ethnic group as well as genetic ancestry. Here, we sought to examine the link between the APOEε4 and neuropsychological functioning among Mexican Americans (MAs). METHODS: Data were examined from 1,633 (852 MAs and 781 non-Hispanic Whites [NHWs]) participants of the Health & Aging Brain Study - Health

Volumetric Differences in Cerebellar Lobes in Individuals from Multiplex Alcohol Dependence Families and Controls: Their Relationship to Externalizing and Internalizing Disorders and Working Memory.

Offspring from families with multiple cases of alcohol dependence have a greater likelihood of developing alcohol dependence and related substance use disorders. Greater susceptibility for these disorders may be related to cerebellar morphology. Because posterior regions of the cerebellum are associated with cognitive abilities, we investigated whether high-risk offspring would display regionally specific differences in cerebellar morphology and whether these would be related to working memory performance. The relationship to externalizing and internalizing psychopathology was of interest beca

Blood pressure interacts with APOE ε4 to predict memory performance in a midlife sample.

OBJECTIVE: Elevated blood pressure and the Apolipoprotein ε4 allele (APOE ε4) are independent risk factors for Alzheimer's disease. We sought to determine whether the combined presence of the APOE ε4 allele and elevated blood pressure is associated with lower cognitive performance in cognitively healthy middle-aged adults. METHODS: A total of 975 participants aged 30-54 (mean age = 44.47) were genotyped for APOE. Cardiometabolic risk factors including blood pressure, lipids, and glucose were assessed and cognitive function was measured using the Trail Making Test and the Visual Reproduction a

Memory Impairment and Hippocampal Volume after Carbon Monoxide Poisoning.

OBJECTIVE: We report longitudinal changes in neuroimaging and neuropsychological measurements in a case of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning showing reversible changes in hippocampal volume, which was closely linked to the degree of memory impairment. METHODS: The current study presents a female in her early 20s, with a high school level of education. She became aware of headaches and drowsiness while working in a restaurant that operated charcoal braziers, and she was urgently transported to our hospital. Her high blood carboxyhemoglobin concentration led to a diagnosis of CO poisoning, but no

Lateralizing value of memory recognition index difference scores (RIDS) in patients with right versus left temporal lobe epilepsy.

INTRODUCTION: The lateralizing value of neuropsychological data remains an important topic. However, no research has examined the utility of Wechsler Memory Scale - Fourth Edition (WMS-IV) recognition memory composites and difference scores between these to assess their accuracy in differentiating patients with right temporal lobe epilepsy (RTLE) from left temporal lobe epilepsy (LTLE). METHODS: This observational study analyzed archival data among 41 presurgical patients with TLE to examine the predictive utility of memory recognition indices and the difference score between these composites

Cognitive Impairment in Adult Patients with 5q-Associated Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

In previous studies, a below-average, average, or above-average intelligence quotient (IQ) in children with SMA was detected but, aside from a severe physical disability, the cognitive performance of adult SMA patients has not yet been evaluated. The intelligence test used in this study, the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, fourth edition (WAIS-IV), was used to measure major intelligence components of adult SMA patients. The WAIS-IV determines four index scores representing verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory, and processing speed. Due to time-dependent demands on moto

Abnormalities in parentally rated executive function in methamphetamine/polysubstance exposed children.

Methamphetamine/polysubstance abuse in women of childbearing age is a major concern because of the potential long-term detrimental effects on the brain function of the fetus following in utero exposure. A battery of established tests, including the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence, Conners' Continuous Performance Test II, Behavioral Rating Inventory of Executive Function, the CMS Family Pictures and Dot Location tests, the Spatial Span test from the WISC-IV-Integrated, and a recently developed spatial learning and memory measure (Memory Island), was used to assess the effects of pren

Familial aggregation of dyslexia phenotypes.

There is evidence for genetic contributions to reading disability, but the phenotypic heterogeneity associated with the clinical diagnosis may make identification of the underlying genetic basis difficult. In order to elucidate distinct phenotypic features that may be contributing to the genotypic heterogeneity, we assessed the familial aggregation patterns of Verbal IQ and 24 phenotypic measures associated with dyslexia in 102 nuclear families ascertained through probands in grades 1 through 6 who met the criteria for this disorder. Correlations between relatives were computed for all diagnos
