A 30-year-old woman who had a destructive Mycobacterium avium complex infection in the left inguinal fossa affecting the pubic bone underwent three-phase bone scanning to identify other possibly affected sites. Multiple skeletal lesions were seen scattered throughout the vertebral column, sternum, and pelvis. Sixteen patients (4 females, 12 males; ages: 15-80 yr) were admitted to our hospital and diagnosed as having acute disseminated tuberculosis (TB). Gallium-67-citrate scans and chest x-rays were used to localize the TB. Swiss mice were infected orally with 200 Trichinella spiralis larvae and injected intraperitoneally with a potent immunomodulator (isolated cell walls of Propionibacterium granulosum strain KP 45). In control mice 22 871 +/- 9913 larvae were found in the whole body, whereas in mice treated with P. granulosum KP 45 on the day of inoculation 9450 larvae +/- 8244 larvae were counted (p less than 0.01). Immunomodulation 7 days before or 7 days after T. spiralis inoculation gave less pronounced effects but the decreasing number of larvae was still significant. It is suggested that the above effects

Naive CBA/Ca mice and CBA/Ca mice vaccinated 4 weeks previously with radiation-attenuated cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni were subjected to 550 rad of whole body (gamma) irradiation and then challenged 3 days later with normal cercariae. The perfusion recovery data showed that this procedure reduced the primary worm burden in naive mice by 22% and the challenge worm burden in vaccinated mice by 82%.
