Evaluation of brain volume alterations in HCV-infected patients after interferon-free therapy: A pilot study.

The study was performed to evaluate cerebral volume changes in HCV-infected subjects before and after interferon-free therapy with direct-acting antiviral agents (DAA). We aimed also to estimate the impact of successful DAA therapy on the neuropsychological state of patients. Eleven HCV genotype 1 (GT1) patients treated with ombitasvir/paritaprevir (boosted with ritonavir) and dasabuvir, with or without ribavirin underwent brain magnetic resonance (MR) before and 24 weeks after completion of therapy. All patients achieved sustained viral response. Precise automatic parcellation was made using

Executive functioning and suicidal behavior among veterans with and without a history of traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between executive dysfunction, as a multidimensional construct (ie, decision-making, impulsivity, aggression, concept formation), and suicide attempt (SA) history in a high-risk sample of veterans with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). DESIGN: Observational, 2×2 factorial design. To estimate group differences, linear regression was used to model the primary and secondary outcomes of interest as a function of history of SA, TBI, and the interaction between the 2 variables. Additionally, to determine the pattern of performance over the cours

Baseline glymphatic efficiency is associated with plasma BDNF changes following rTMS: an exploratory biomarker study in mood disorders.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been proposed as a potential biological correlate of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). However, its relationship with clinical and cognitive outcomes in mood disorders remains unclear. In this prospective exploratory pre-post study, 28 adults with major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder underwent 12 sessions of high-frequency left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) rTMS while continuing pharmacological treatment. Assessments included Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HDRS-24), Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), plas

Engineering a Timing-Accurate VR-EEG-Oculomotor Fusion System for Objective Assessment of Executive Function in ADHD.

Objective, scalable assessment of executive function in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is limited by subjective rating scales and single modality tests. We present a timing-characterized virtual-reality (VR) implementation of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) synchronized with EEG and oculomotor/cephalic sensing for objective ADHD assessment in children. Stimulus-onset timing was empirically validated with a dedicated photodiode measurement across screen locations and distractor conditions. One hundred and one children (7-15 years; 64 ADHD, 37 control) completed a tutoria

The associations between glucose, inflammation, cognitive functions, and white matter structural connectivity in euthymic bipolar patients.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that human white matter structural connectivity is independently associated with glucose metabolism, inflammation, and cognitive function. However, an integrative understanding of these relationships in bipolar disorder (BD) remains unclear. METHODS: This study included 44 euthymic patients with BD and 59 healthy controls (HCs). White matter structural connectivity was assessed using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Metabolic parameters, including fasting glucose and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), were measured. Cognitive function was evalu

Childhood neglect is associated with corticostriatal circuit dysfunction in bipolar disorder adults.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized with cognitive impairment, which may be mediated by corticostriatal dysfunction. Here we examined whether history of childhood trauma, a risk factor for BD, was linked to corticostriatal dysfunction in BD patients. Furthermore, the possible associations between childhood trauma and cognitive impairment were examined. Thirty-eight BD participants who met the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria were enrolled. Childhood trauma was identified via the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Participants completed the Wisconsin Card-Sorting Test (WCST). Resting-state func

The cognitive profile of occipital lobe epilepsy and the selective association of left temporal lobe hypometabolism with verbal memory impairment.

We investigated the cognitive profile of structural occipital lobe epilepsy (OLE) and whether verbal memory impairment is selectively associated with left temporal lobe hypometabolism on [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET). Nine patients with OLE, ages 8-29 years, completed presurgical neuropsychological assessment. Composite measures were calculated for intelligence quotient (IQ), speed, attention, verbal memory, nonverbal memory, and executive functioning. In addition, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) was used as a specific measure of frontal lobe functionin

Clinical investigation of set-shifting subtypes in anorexia nervosa.

While evidence continues to accumulate on the relevance of cognitive inflexibility in anorexia nervosa (AN), its clinical correlates remain unclear. We aimed at examining the relationship between set-shifting and clinical variables (i.e., eating psychopathology, depression, and personality) in AN. Ninety-four individuals affected by AN and 59 healthy controls (HC) were recruited. All participants were assessed using: Eating Disorders Inventory-2 (EDI-2), Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). The AN group scored worse

Neuropsychological impairment as a consequence of football (soccer) play and football heading: preliminary analyses and report on university footballers.

Previous research has claimed neuropsychological impairment occurs as a result of professional and amateur football play, and, specifically, football heading. However, much of this research exhibits substantial methodological problems. By investigating less committed amateur level footballers, the current study sought to gain some insight into the developmental history of any neuropsychological consequences of football play. University football, rugby and noncontact sports players were compared on a range of biographical and neuropsychological test variables. While playing their chosen sports,

Executive function abnormalities in pathological gamblers.

BACKGROUND: Pathological gambling (PG) is an impulse control disorder characterized by persistent and maladaptive gambling behaviors with disruptive consequences for familial, occupational and social functions. The pathophysiology of PG is still unclear, but it is hypothesized that it might include environmental factors coupled with a genetic vulnerability and dysfunctions of different neurotransmitters and selected brain areas. Our study aimed to evaluate a group of patients suffering from PG by means of some neuropsychological tests in order to explore the brain areas related to the disorder

Abnormal saccadic distractibility in patients with schizophrenia: a 99mTc-HMPAO SPET study.

Recent research has shown that some patients with schizophrenia have a severe impairment in the suppression of reflexive saccadic eye movements in the ANTI-saccade task. This saccadic distractibility has previously been found in patients with lesions of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, implicating an abnormality of prefrontal cortex. The objective of the present study was to determine the contribution of these and other areas to the ANTI-saccadic abnormality in schizophrenia by functional neuroimaging. Using 99mtechnetium-HMPAO high resolution multidetector single-photon emission tomography, re
