[Trichinelliasis in western Podolia].

Situation with trichinosis in the Ternopol Province (Ukraine) in the period from 1962 to 1987 was studied. Muscle samples taken from 6695 animals of 20 species were investigated by the compressor method and by the method of digestion in artificial gastric juice. Trichinosis was detected in wolves, foxes, martens, ferrets, domestic dogs, cats and gray rats. In 1954--1979 39 trichinosis cases were registered in humans with 4 lethal cases. Domestic pigs proved to be the source of invasion. Since 1980 up to the end of investigation trichinosis cases have not been registered in people or in domesti

[Epidemiology of rabies virus and other lyssaviruses].

Rabies is a zoonosis that infects domestic and wild animals through close contacts with saliva from infected animals. The annual number of deaths worldwide caused by rabies is estimated approximately 55,000 by World Health Organization (WHO). There has been no indigenous rabies case in Japan since 1957; however, there was only one imported case, a traveler who was bitten by a stray dog in Nepal and died in 1970. Dogs in Asia and Africa remain the main reservoir and transmitter of rabies to humans. The others are mainly coyotes, foxes, jackals, mongooses, raccoons, skunks, wolves and bats. The

Ancylostomatidae in wild canids and felids from Romania: new host associations and haplotype diversity.

BACKGROUND: Hookworms (Ancylostomatidae) significantly impact on the health of both domestic animals and humans worldwide, with some species capable of causing zoonotic diseases. While hookworm infections in pets are frequently reported in Europe primarily through coproscopic studies, there are limited data regarding their presence in wild carnivores. To address this, this study aimed to assess the diversity, prevalence, and distribution of hookworms in wild canids and felids from Romania through both morphological and molecular analyses. METHODS: From November 2011 to February 2025, 319 carc

Wild canids as reservoirs of zoonotic Bartonella species in Israel.

BACKGROUND: Bartonella species are Gram-negative bacteria transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods and maintained in a wide range of mammalian hosts worldwide. They are emerging and re-emerging pathogens at the wildlife-domestic, animal-human interface. Wild canids are considered important reservoirs and sentinels for vector-borne pathogens, including zoonotic species of Bartonella. This study evaluated the eco-epidemiological traits and diversity of Bartonella infections among wild canids from Israel. METHODS: Between 2018 and 2025, blood samples from wild canids were collected across 158 sam

Role of chemotherapeutic agents in the management of cystic echinococcosis.

Hydatid disease is caused by infection with the metacestode stage of Echinococcus tapeworms of the family Taeniidae. The primary carriers are dogs and wolves, and humans are accidental hosts that do not contribute to the normal life cycle of this organism. The liver is the most commonly involved organ in the body by cystic echinococcosis (CE) secondary to infection with Echinococcus granulosus . Management options for CE should depend on the World Health Organization (WHO) diagnostic classification. Small (<5 cm) WHO stage CE1 and CE3a cysts may be primarily treated with benzimidazoles; the fi

Unusual presentation of telangiectasia macularis eruptiva perstans at the site of healed herpes zoster; Wolf's isotopic response.

There are several reported cases of Wolf's isotopic response, including infections, cancers, inflammatory and immune-related disorders. It is interesting that the majority of these occurred after herpes zoster (HZ) had healed. In this article, we describe an unusual case of adult mastocytosis/telangiectasia macularis eruptiva perstans (TMEP) at the location of recovered HZ. Given that adult mastocytosis is thought to be caused by dysregulation of the mast cell growth factor receptor, the c-Kit proto-oncogene (CD117), and the fact that the varicella zoster virus-infected cutaneous lesions conta

Evidence of coat color variation sheds new light on ancient canids.

We have used a paleogenetics approach to investigate the genetic landscape of coat color variation in ancient Eurasian dog and wolf populations. We amplified DNA fragments of two genes controlling coat color, Mc1r (Melanocortin 1 Receptor) and CBD103 (canine-β-defensin), in respectively 15 and 19 ancient canids (dogs and wolf morphotypes) from 14 different archeological sites, throughout Asia and Europe spanning from ca. 12 000 B.P. (end of Upper Palaeolithic) to ca. 4000 B.P. (Bronze Age). We provide evidence of a new variant (R301C) of the Melanocortin 1 receptor (Mc1r) and highlight the pre

Emergence of lyssaviruses in the Old World: the case of Africa.

Rabies has a long history of occurrence throughout Africa, spanning hundreds of years. At least four distinct Lyssavirus species persist throughout the continent, among carnivores, bats and other mammals. Rabies virus is the most cosmopolitan member, with primary reservoirs within dogs and mongoose, but other wildlife vectors are important in viral maintenance, such as jackals. Besides a prominent toll on humans and domestic animals, the disease has an underappreciated role in conservation biology, especially for such highly endangered fauna as African wild dogs and Ethiopian wolves. Both Duve

Landscape heterogeneity buffers the impact of an extreme weather event on wildlife.

Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, with poorly known consequences for wildlife. In December 2021, an atmospheric river brought record-shattering amounts of rain and snow to interior Alaska, creating conditions expected to cause mass mortality in grazing ungulate populations that need to access ground forage. We characterized snowpack conditions following the storm and used a 36-year monitoring dataset to quantify impacts on caribou (Rangifer tarandus) and their primary predator, wolves (Canis lupus). December precipitation was 7.3 SD above the 99-year mean and 2.5-fold higher t

LupiQuant: A real-time PCR based assay for determining host-to-parasite DNA ratios of Onchocerca lupi and host Canis lupus from onchocercosis samples.

Onchocerca lupi is a filarial nematode that causes ocular onchocercosis in canines globally including North America and areas of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Reported incidence of this parasite in canines has continued to steadily escalate since the early 21st century and was more recently documented in humans. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) of this parasite can provide insight into gene content, provide novel surveillance targets, and elucidate the origin and range expansion. However, past attempts of whole genome sequencing of other Onchocerca species reported a substantial port

Environmental Exposure of Wild Carnivores to Zoonotic Pathogens: Leptospira Infection in the First Free Living Wolf (Canis lupus Linnaeus, 1758) Found Dead in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region.

Leptospirosis is a worldwide-spread zoonosis causing disease and death in dogs and in humans. A Leptospiral infection has been recorded in several wild carnivore species in Europe, but tissue pathological changes were not commonly described. The Grey wolf (Canis lupus) has been expanding its distribution range in north-eastern Italy during the last decade. A young wolf, representing the first individual handled in the region, was found road-killed and then submitted to necropsy. Pathological changes included erosive lesions of gingival mucosa, mild liver enlargement, and multifocal degenerativ
