Detection of radiation induced lung injury in rats using dynamic hyperpolarized (129)Xe magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

PURPOSE: Radiation induced lung injury (RILI) is a common side effect for patients undergoing thoracic radiation therapy (RT). RILI can lead to temporary or permanent loss of lung function and in extreme cases, death. Combining functional lung imaging information with conventional radiation treatment plans may lead to more desirable treatment plans that reduce lung toxicity and improve the quality of life for lung cancer survivors. Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the lung following inhalation of hyperpolarized(129)Xe may provide a useful nonionizing approach for probing changes in lung function

Blood flow of free gingival grafts measured by xenon-133 clearance.

Blood circulation of free gingival grafts by Xe-133 clearance was evaluated in this study with special attention to the relationship between the amount of circulation and graft thickness, surface area and contraction during the initial healing phase. Following baseline clinical examination and initial periodontal therapy, 32 patients received mucogingival surgery with free gingival grafts for treatment of insufficient attached gingiva. Blood flow in recipient and donor areas was measured by injection of Xe-133. Xenon clearance in the free gingival grafts was measured at the first, tenth, twent

Pulmonary blood flow distribution after the total cavopulmonary connection for complex cardiac anomalies.

In total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC), the anastomotic portion of the caval veins to the pulmonary artery (PA) is decided empirically based on personal experience. To compare the pulmonary flow distribution from both caval veins in various types of cavopulmonary anastomosis, intrapulmonary ventilation-perfusion distribution after TCPC was studied using lung scanning. We studied 11 patients, 2 to 37 years old, at 30-84 months after TCPC. Lung scanning was performed by administering 185 MBq of xenon-133 saline solution from their upper extremities and, after xenon-133 was washed out, from the

Brain functional imaging SPECT in agyria-pachygyria.

Agyria-pachygyria or lissencephaly type I, a diffuse cortical malformation, provides infantile spasms (IS) which are refractory and persisting after the first decade, an age at which IS have disappeared in the other causes. In order to study the functional postnatal development of the lissencephalic cortex, we measured regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) using SPECT (Single photon emission computed tomography) and 133Xe in 14 children with lissencephaly, aged from 4 months to 12 years (mean = 40 months) compared to normal children of the same age range and to children with cryptogenic IS aged

Hemodynamic study of internal carotid artery stenosis and occlusion: value of combined isotopic measurements of regional cerebral blood flow and blood volume.

The assessment of the intracranial hemodynamic consequences of obstructive lesions of the carotid artery by measuring resting rCBF is inadequate because cerebral blood flow may remain constant in spite of significant drops in the intraluminal pressure due to autoregulation. Moreover, flow may be permanently decreased following cerebral infarction, even if the arterial anatomical conditions have resumed their normal state because of the decreased metabolic demand of an infarcted area. Measurement of the regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV) helps with the hemodynamic assessment of these conditi

Radionuclide imaging in the assessment of lung injury.

Nuclear medicine imaging techniques are being more widely applied to study a variety of lung injuries. Ventilation and perfusion imaging is often superior to other roentgenographic techniques for establishing the diagnosis and demonstrating the extent of such injuries. At several large burn centers, the Xe-133 washout technique has become the cornerstone for diagnosing early inhalation injury. The overall accuracy of this procedure is 92%. Regional decreases in ventilation and perfusion can reliably localize aspirated radiolucent foreign bodies. Disproportionate perfusion changes are often the

Regional cerebral blood flow, diaschisis, and steal after stroke.

Regional CBF was measured by 133Xe inhalation in unilateral cerebral infarction, carotid TIAs, and normal volunteers. Regional CBF values were bilaterally and symmetrically reduced in patients measured within 3 weeks after stroke. Later, rCBF values returned toward normal in the contralateral hemisphere of patients with infarction and in both hemispheres with carotid TIAs. In cases with carotid occlusive disease, flow reduction was seen in the contralateral posterior cerebral artery distribution, with hyperemia in ipsilateral occipital lobe caused by interhemispheric steal. Brainstem-cerebella

Critical appraisal of cerebral blood flow measured from brain stem and cerebellar regions after 133 Xe inhalation in humans.

Validity of regional blood flow (rCBF) measurements recorded over the human posterior fossa after 133Xe inhalation was tested. Recording of counts from both brain stem and cerebellum (BSC) was reproducible and contamination by counts derived from surrounding anatomical structures was low and no greater than that found over hemispheres. BSC values were F1 = 99 +/- 19 ml/100g brain/min, F2 = 17 +/- 4 in reasonable agreement with data reported from experimental animals. BSC flow values showed significant correlation with the state of awareness as judged by clinical and EEG evaluation with lowest

Cardiopulmonary performance at rest and during exercise in seven patients with increased transradiancy of one lung ("Macleod's syndrome").

A group of seven patients with increased transradiancy of one lung included four with chronic bronchitis. The function of the two lungs combined was assessed by measurement of the lung volumes, airway resistance, and carbon monoxide uptake at rest, and by measurement of pulmonary ventilation, gas exchange, blood gases, and cardiac output at rest and during steady state exercise. The contribution of the hypertransradiant lung to the overall functional abnormalities at rest was estimated using a radioactive gas technique. All the patients had airway obstruction. Pulmonary gas exchange was only m

Regional cerebral blood flow in childhood autism: a SPECT study.

OBJECTIVE: The authors investigated a possible cortical brain dysfunction associated with infantile autism. METHOD: They measured regional cerebral blood flow with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and xenon-133 in 21 children with primary autism (according to DSM-III-R criteria). Five cortical brain areas including frontal, temporal, and sensory association cortices were examined in order to test the recent hypothesis of cerebral dysfunction in primary autism. Anatomical references for each subject were obtained with computerized tomography or magnetic resonance imaging and

Role of scintigraphy in focally abnormal sonograms of fatty livers.

Fatty infiltration of the liver may cause a range of focal abnormalities on hepatic sonography which may simulate hepatic nodular lesions. Discrete deposits of fat or islands of normal tissue which are uninvolved by fatty infiltration may stand out as potential space-occupying lesions on the sonograms. Twelve patients with such focally abnormal ultrasound images were referred for liver scintigraphy with 133Xe and 99mTc colloidal SPECT studies to clarify the issue. These examinations helped identify, in nine of 12 patients, the innocent nature of the sonographic abnormalities which were simply

[Regional cerebral blood flow in the acute stage with ischemic cerebrovascular disease studied by xenon-133 inhalation and single photon emission computerized tomography].

The papers about cerebral blood flow (CBF) in patients with cerebrovascular diseases have been already reported by positron emission computerized tomography (PET), single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT), Xray CT (CT) using cold Xe, and so on. However the literature about the CBF changes in acute stage is few. We studied CBF in 68 patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease within 48 hours after the onsets from February 1984 through February 1985. CBF was measured by a rapidly rotating single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) using non-invasive Xenon-133 inhalat

High-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance imaging and single photon emission computerized tomography--cerebral blood flow in a case of pure sensory stroke and mild dementia owing to subcortical arteriosclerotic encephalopathy (Binswanger's disease).

Pure sensory stroke (PSS) is typically caused by a lacunar infarct located in the ventral-posterior (VP) thalamic nucleus contralateral to the paresthetic symptoms. The lesion is usually so small that it cannot be seen on computerized tomography (CT), as illustrated by our case. In our moderately hypertensive, 72-year-old patient with PSS, CT scanning and conventional nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (NMRI) scanning using a 7-mm-thick slice on a 1.5 Tesla instrument all failed to visualize the thalamic infarct. Using the high-resolution mode with 2-mm slice thickness it was, however, clearly
