Psychophysiologic effects of Hatha Yoga on musculoskeletal and cardiopulmonary function: a literature review.

Yoga has become increasingly popular in Western cultures as a means of exercise and fitness training; however, it is still depicted as trendy as evidenced by an April 2001 Time magazine cover story on "The Power of Yoga." There is a need to have yoga better recognized by the health care community as a complement to conventional medical care. Over the last 10 years, a growing number of research studies have shown that the practice of Hatha Yoga can improve strength and flexibility, and may help control such physiological variables as blood pressure, respiration and heart rate, and metabolic rat

Yoga Therapy During Chemotherapy for Early-Stage and Locally Advanced Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy is associated with decreased quality of life (QOL), fatigue, depression, and weight gain in patients with breast cancer. Weight gain is associated with poorer prognosis. Yoga improves QOL, fatigue, and mood in women with breast cancer but its effect on treatment-related weight gain has not been studied. The aim of this trial was to determine the feasibility of personalized yoga therapy in women receiving treatment for early-stage or locally advanced breast cancer and assess its impact on weight gain. METHODS: Thirty women were randomized 1:1 to receive yoga therapy by

Yoga therapy for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD): A case series from India.

Yoga is an ancient science which has been found to be helpful in the management of several psychiatric disorders including Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Yoga as add-on treatment in OCD may help address issues like partial response and adverse effects of medications. However, research in this area is sparse, which led us to explore it through this case series. In this case series we have described the benefits of 1 month of yoga as add-on treatment in patients with OCD. All patients were on stable doses of medications prior to and during yoga practice. Pre-post assessments for the core s

Functional status in adhesive capsulitis - yoga vs. physiotherapy: a quasi experimental study.

OBJECTIVES: Adhesive capsulitis results in a multidimensional disability which demands a polygonal approach. Although physiotherapy proves an essential for a complete and comprehensive recovery in adhesive capsulitis, evidence also suggest the role of yoga in the management, hence this study investigate their effectiveness. METHODS: This is a quasi-randomised control study. A pre-diagnosed subacute and chronic adhesive capsulitis of shoulder, between the age group of 35-60 years of both genders of total 40 participants were randomly divided into Group 'A' (yogasana) and Group 'B' (physiothera

A Radical RN- BS Nursing Class: Outcomes from an Integrative Yoga Elective.

With the knowledge of psychoneuroimmunological responses and the known high stress levels of nursing students, as caring nurse educators, we have become ethically obligated to revise and re-vision our current nursing educational practices. Nurse educators should be motivated to create innovative and radical caring science curricular approaches, so that our nurses of the future are in turn supported in creating caring- healing sustainable bedside practices. This paper details the outcomes from an upper level yoga elective in an RN- BSN program. The course is just one within an innovative holist

Multicenter, randomized controlled trial of yoga for sleep quality among cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: Thirty percent to 90% of cancer survivors report impaired sleep quality post-treatment, which can be severe enough to increase morbidity and mortality. Lifestyle interventions, such as exercise, are recommended in conjunction with drugs and cognitive behavioral therapy for the treatment of impaired sleep. Preliminary evidence indicates that yoga-a mind-body practice and form of exercise-may improve sleep among cancer survivors. The primary aim of this randomized, controlled clinical trial was to determine the efficacy of a standardized yoga intervention compared with standard care for

Yoga lessons for consciousness research: a paralimbic network balancing brain resource allocation.

Consciousness has been proposed to play a key role in shaping flexible learning and as such is thought to confer an evolutionary advantage. Attention and awareness are the perhaps most important underlying processes, yet their precise relationship is presently unclear. Both of these processes must, however, serve the evolutionary imperatives of survival and procreation. They are thus intimately bound by reward and emotion to help to prioritize efficient brain resource allocation in order to predict and optimize behavior. Here we show how this process is served by a paralimbic network consistin

Mapping Conditional Associations Among Wellbeing, Distress, Spirituality, and Yoga Practice: A Network Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Yoga practice is associated with enhanced wellbeing and reduced psychological distress; however, the conditional interrelations among yoga frequency, perceived health, wellbeing, distress, and spirituality remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to map these associations and identify variables uniquely relevant to wellbeing among yoga practitioners. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 326 yoga practitioners (94.2% women; Mage = 39.84, SD = 14.81). A Gaussian graphical model with EBIC-graphical LASSO regularization was used to estimate

Heated yoga thaws depression: A dose-response analysis from a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Heated yoga has promise as an adjunctive and standalone treatment for depression, yet the dose-response relationship is not well understood. This secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial evaluated the relationship between yoga "dose" and change in depressive symptoms. METHODS: Eighty adults with moderate-to-severe depression (Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology-Clinician Rated [IDS-CR] ≥23) were randomized to an 8-week (1) community-based heated yoga intervention (90 min per session, encouraged at least twice weekly) or (2) a waitlist-first control group that subsequ

Specific Dimensions of Treatment Satisfaction with Yoga and Allied Therapies Predict Health Outcomes.

Previous studies showed that patients' satisfaction with conventional medical treatment positively influences their health outcomes. However, this association is less clear for complementary and integrative medicine and has not been reported for yoga therapy. Three hundred four people (age 49.48 ± 14.73; 145 males, 159 females) were recruited from admissions to a residential wellness center in India. Their most common conditions were: (1) endocrine, nutritional, or metabolic diseases (25.99%); (2) digestive system disorders (22.37%); and (3) diseases of the musculoskeletal system or connective
