Machine learning assessment of myocardial ischemia using angiography: Development and retrospective validation.

BACKGROUND: Invasive fractional flow reserve (FFR) is a standard tool for identifying ischemia-producing coronary stenosis. However, in clinical practice, over 70% of treatment decisions still rely on visual estimation of angiographic stenosis, which has limited accuracy (about 60%-65%) for the prediction of FFR < 0.80. One of the reasons for the visual-functional mismatch is that myocardial ischemia can be affected by the supplied myocardial size, which is not always evident by coronary angiography. The aims of this study were to develop an angiography-based machine learning (ML) algorithm fo

Machine Learning and Causal Approaches to Predict Readmissions and Its Economic Consequences Among Canadian Patients With Heart Disease: Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Unplanned patient readmissions within 30 days of discharge pose a substantial challenge in Canadian health care economics. To address this issue, risk stratification, machine learning, and linear regression paradigms have been proposed as potential predictive solutions. Ensemble machine learning methods, such as stacked ensemble models with boosted tree algorithms, have shown promise for early risk identification in specific patient groups. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to implement an ensemble model with submodels for structured data, compare metrics, evaluate the impact of optimize

From a Multi-Omics Signature to a Therapeutic Candidate: Computational Prediction and Experimental Validation in Liver Fibrosis.

Background: Advanced liver fibrosis (LF) is a major determinant of prognosis across chronic liver diseases. Current biomarkers are often etiology-specific and lack cross-cohort robustness. Shared molecular drivers across etiologies remain incompletely defined, and effective anti-fibrotic therapies are limited. Methods: We developed a multi-algorithm consensus machine-learning framework to derive a robust LF progression signature. In the training non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) cohort GSE213621 (n = 368), samples were formulated as a binary classification task (mild fibrosis, F0-F2; a

A novel three-CpG signature for lung adenocarcinoma diagnosis: integrating multi-omics, machine learning, and clinical validation.

BACKGROUND: Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. The identification of non-invasive biomarkers for early detection is critical to improving patient outcomes. Integrative analysis of DNA methylation and gene expression represents a promising approach for identifying cancer-specific diagnostic markers. This study aimed to identify and validate a LUAD-specific DNA methylation signature for the early detection of LUAD. METHODS: An integrated analysis of DNA methylation data from the Illumina HumanMethylation450K array, including 455 tumor samples, 3

Development and Validation of an Interpretable Machine Learning Model for Staging Helicobacter pylori-Initiated Intestinal-Type Gastric Cancer in the Correa Cascade: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common malignant tumors worldwide, with Helicobacter pylori-associated intestinal-type gastric cancer (IGC) being the most prevalent subtype, accounting for approximately 85% of cases. Because most patients are diagnosed at intermediate or advanced stages, early screening and accurate stage stratification of IGC progression remain major clinical challenges. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop an interpretable machine learning (ML) model that leverages routine laboratory indicators to perform stage-specific diagnosis for patients across dif

Predicting generalized anxiety disorder among Chinese depressed adolescents: an explainable machine learning approach.

BACKGROUND: The co-occurrence of depression and anxiety in adolescents is associated with a greater risk than the presence of depressive symptoms alone. Predicting anxiety disorders among depressed adolescents is critical for interventions and therapeutic tools. METHODS: We recruited 2316 depressed adolescents through the Chinese Adolescent Depression Cohort (CADC) and collected 34 predictive factors for model construction. The Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM) prediction model and Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) algorithm were implemented for in-depth interpretation of the pred

Optimizing prediction of metastasis among colorectal cancer patients using machine learning technology.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Colorectal cancer is among the most prevalent and deadliest cancers. Early prediction of metastasis in patients with colorectal cancer is crucial in preventing it from the advanced stages and enhancing the prognosis among these patients. So far, previous studies have been conducted to predict metastasis in colorectal cancer patients using clinical data. The current research attempts to leverage a combination of demographic, lifestyle, nutritional, and clinical factors, such as diagnostic and therapeutical factors, to construct an ML model with more predictive insights and g

Cross-algorithm machine learning and consensus features for early disseminated intravascular coagulation risk prediction in sepsis-induced coagulopathy.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis-induced coagulopathy (SIC) represents an early and potentially reversible stage of coagulation dysfunction in sepsis, whereas progression to disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is associated with multi-organ failure and markedly increased mortality. Although existing diagnostic criteria and machine learning (ML) models have demonstrated utility in broad sepsis populations, they lack specificity for identifying high-risk subgroups within SIC patients who are most likely to deteriorate into DIC. Timely and precise risk stratification at this critical transition point

The association of origin and environmental conditions with performance in professional IRONMAN triathletes.

We have (i) little knowledge about where the fastest professional IRONMAN triathletes originate from and where the fastest races take place and (ii) we have no knowledge of the optimal weather conditions for an IRONMAN triathlon. The aims of the present study were, therefore, (i) to investigate the origin and the fastest IRONMAN race courses for professional triathletes and (ii) to evaluate the best environmental conditions (i.e. water and air temperatures and type of race course) for the fastest IRONMAN race times in professional IRONMAN triathletes. Data of all professional female and male I

Race course characteristics are the most important predictors in 48 h ultramarathon running.

Ultra-marathon running - where races are held in distance-limited (50 km, 50 miles, 100 km, 100 miles, etc.), time-limited (6 h, 12 h, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, etc.), and multi-stage races - is gaining in popularity. However, we have no knowledge of where the fastest 48-hour runners originate and where the fastest 48-hour races are held. This study tried to determine the origin of the fastest 48-hour runners and the predictor factors associated with 48-hour ultra-marathon performance, such as age, gender, event country, country of origin and race course specific characteristics. Telemedicine adoption in cardiology: Determinants and predictors identified using Bayesian Model Averaging and Machine Learning.

In this secondary analysis of a German cross-sectional survey data, we investigated key determinants and predictors of telemedicine (TM) use among healthcare professionals (HCPs) treating cardiology patients. We applied Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA) for explanatory analysis and Machine Learning (ML) for predictive modeling. BMA identified TM determinants after excluding collinear variables and selecting variables based on LASSO regression. The extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) ML algorithm predicted TM use and identified key predictors, using nested cross-validation to prevent overfitting.
