Investigation of physiological, metabolomics analysis and HvSOS1 genes of priming with azelaic acid in barley seeds under salt stress.

Azelaic acid (AzA) is a nine-carbon dicarboxylic acid that plays a role in the systemic acquired resistance (SAR) mechanism. Upon consulting the published data on the topic, many studies were available, dedicated on the mechanism of action of azelaic acid in plants under normal conditions and biotic stress, but remarkably few on the abiotic stress. Barley seeds (Hordeum vulgare L.) from the cultivars Bülbül89 and Avcı2002 (salt tolerant and sensitive), were pre-treated with three different concentrations of azelaic acid (2, 4, 8 ppm) and later the seedlings were exposed to salt stress with 300

Design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of oxime ether derivatives containing 1,5-dimethyl-6-thioxo-1,3,5-triazinane-2,4-dione as protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: Herbicides based on protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (PPO; EC 1.3.3.4) are widely used for weeding control in agricultural fields to safeguard food security. PPO herbicides, because of their low dosage, rapid action on weeds, slow accumulation in the environment and low toxicity to mammals, have become an important field of research in the development of new herbicides. This study presents a novel molecular scaffold with remarkably potent herbicidal activity. RESULTS: A series of novel oxime ether derivatives containing 1,5-dimethyl-6-thioxo-1,3,5-triazinane-2,4-dione 6a-6z were desi

External application of growth regulators modulates morpho-physiological traits and biochemical profiles of fennel.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill) is a valuable medicinal plant from the Apiaceae family, cultivated for its essential oil, seeds, and leaves, which are used in the pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetics industries. This study tested the hypothesis that plant growth regulators (PGRs) positively modulate the morphological, physiological, and phytochemical properties of fennel. To test this hypothesis, a factorial experiment was carried out with foliar applications of four plant growth regulators, including salicylic acid (SA: 1 and 2 mM), gibberellic acid (GA: 0.25 and 0.5 mM), gamma-aminobutyric a

Intraspecific variation for heat stress tolerance in wild emmer-derived durum wheat populations.

High temperatures pose a major threat to wheat productivity and necessitate the development of new cultivars that are resilient to future heat stress. Wild emmer (Triticum turgidum L. ssp. dicoccoides), which is a direct progenitor of domesticated durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. ssp. durum) and contributor to the A and B genome of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum), offers a valuable genetic reservoir for developing climate-resilient wheat. However, the morphology of wild emmer is different from that of durum and bread wheat, in particular, the spikelets are fragile and naturally fall off, maki

Individual and Interactive Effects of Temperature and Watering Regime on Canola Growth and Physiological Characteristics.

Although many studies have considered the effects of temperature and water on plants, the combined effects of these factors on canola (Brassica napus) growth, physiological traits, and fatty acids require more attention. Canola is an important oilseed crop in Canada and around the world and fatty acids act as regulators of stress signaling. We grew plants under two temperature regimes (22°C/18°C and 28°C/24°C; 16 h light and 8 h dark) and two watering regimes (well-watered and water stressed) in controlled-environment growth chamber for 3 weeks after 1 week of initial growth under 22°C/18°C. Comprehensive Assessment of Local and Exotic Sorghum Genotypes for Forage Production and Quality Under Drought Conditions.

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.), locally known as jowar, is a vital summer fodder crop in Pakistan, significantly contributing to livestock sustenance. However, drought stress poses a critical challenge by reducing plant biomass and elevating hydrogen cyanide (HCN) content, a toxic antiquality component that endangers livestock health. This study aimed to identify sorghum genotypes with improved fodder yield and reduced HCN content under drought stress. Seventy diverse genotypes were evaluated in a hydroponic system under three polyethylene glycol (PEG) levels (0%, 5%, and 10%) in a two-factor fa

Novel nanocomposite and biochar insights to boost rice growth and alleviation of Cd toxicity.

Cadmium (Cd) is an unessential and pervasive contaminant in agricultural soil, eventually affecting the food and instigating health issues. The implication of nanocomposites in agriculture attained significant attention to drive food security. Nanocomposites possess exceptional characteristics to stun the challenges of chemical fertilizers that can enhance plant yield and better nutrient bioavailability. Similarly, biochar has the ability to immobilize Cd in soil by reducing mobility and bioavailability. Rice husk biochar is produced at high temperature pyrolysis under anoxic conditions and a

Synergizing Bacillus halotolerans, Pseudomonas sihuiensis and Bacillus atrophaeus with folic acid for enhanced drought resistance in wheat by metabolites and antioxidants.

Drought stress imposes a serious challenge to cultivate wheat, restricting its growth. Drought reduces the capability of plant to uptake essential nutrients. This causes stunted growth, development and yield. Traditional ways to increase wheat growth under drought stress have shortcomings. Using plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) has proved feasible and eco-friendly way to enhance wheat growth even under the drought stress. Combining PGPR in consortiums further boosts up their effects. In this study, we have checked the efficacy of drought-tolerant Bacillus halotolerans, Pseudomonas s

Mitigation of water scarcity with sustained growth of Rice by plant growth promoting bacteria.

Climate change augments the risk to food security by inducing drought stress and a drastic decline in global rice production. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) have been known to improve plant growth under drought stress. Here in the present study, we isolated, identified, and well-characterized eight drought-tolerant bacteria from the rice rhizosphere that are tolerant to 20% PEG-8000. These strains exhibited multiple plant growth-promoting traits, i.e., 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase activity, exopolysaccharide production, phosphate (P)-solubilizing activity (51-3

Proteomics analysis reveals novel host molecular mechanisms associated with thermotherapy of 'Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus'-infected citrus plants.

BACKGROUND: Citrus Huanglongbing (HLB), which is linked to the bacterial pathogen 'Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus' (Las), is the most devastating disease of citrus plants, and longer-term control measures via breeding or genetic engineering have been unwieldy because all cultivated citrus species are susceptible to the disease. However, the degree of susceptibility varies among citrus species, which has prompted efforts to identify potential Las resistance/tolerance-related genes in citrus plants for application in breeding or genetic engineering programs. Plant exposure to one form of stress has

Air-water CO2 exchange in transformed saltmarshes for different uses and under various management models.

The rise of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) caused by anthropogenic activities is accelerating global warming. Assessing the capacity of natural ecosystems to act as sources or sinks for atmospheric CO2 is fundamental to elaborate CO2 global budgets and to establish climate change mitigation strategies. This work analyses the air-water exchange of CO2 in saltmarshes of the Bay of Cadiz (SW Spain), which have been transformed for different uses and commercial practises and are managed distinctly. Specifically, the study examines four kind of saltmarsh systems (an artisanal saltpan, two industr
