OBJECTIVE: To determine characteristics of the foot and ankle in people with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
METHODS: Medline, CINAHL, Sports-Discus, Scopus and Cochrane Library databases were searched up to January 2018. Studies reporting foot- and ankle-related outcomes in the following domains were included: vascular, neurological, musculoskeletal, cutaneous (skin and nail) or pain/function. The Quality Index tool was used to assess methodological quality. Where appropriate, odds ratio (OR) and mean difference meta-analyses were conducted for case-control studies; and pooled mean preva

The isolated gastrocnemius contracture present in neurologic healthy patients results in a significant limitation of ankle dorsiflexion causing pathologic gait patterns and a greater risk of further foot disorders. Gastrocnemius recession is an established procedure to increase ankle dorsiflexion. However, little evidence is available of the use of gastrocnemius recession in these patients. Complication rates, recurrence of gastrocnemius contracture, and the prevalence of additional foot disorders needs further evaluation. A study group of 64 operated limbs undergoing gastrocnemius recession w

BACKGROUND: Subtle hypermobility of the first tarsometatarsal joint can occur concomitantly with other pathologies and may be difficult to diagnose. Peroneus Longus muscle might influence stability of this joint. Collapse of the medial longitudinal arch is common in flatfoot deformity and the muscle might also play a role in correcting Meary's angle.
METHODS: A radiolucent frame was used to simulate weightbearing during CT examination. Eight pairs fresh-frozen lower legs were imaged in neutral position under non-weightbearing (75N), weightbearing (700N) and with 15kg weights hung from Peroneu

Shear forces under the human foot are thought to be responsible for various foot pathologies such as diabetic plantar ulcers and athletic blisters. Frictional shear forces might also play a role in the metatarsalgia observed among hallux valgus (HaV) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Due to the absence of commercial devices capable of measuring shear stress distribution, a number of linear models were developed. All of these have met with limited success. This study used nonlinear methods, specifically neural network and fuzzy logic schemes, to predict the distribution of plantar shear f

First metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) arthrodesis remains a commonly used and reliable procedure for a variety of pathologies of the first MTPJ. Many costly fixation constructions have been described to achieve union with first MTPJ arthrodesis. We hypothesized that the incidence of union would be the same for both buried Kirchner (K)-wire and solid crossed screw fixation with immediate weightbearing. To test this hypothesis, we retrospectively reviewed first MTPJ fusions performed by the senior author (C.A.C.) during a 6-year period and compared the incidence of union. Only patients who were

Absorbable polyglycolide pins were used for fixation of 94 chevron osteotomies in 70 patients at the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Helsinki University Central Hospital, between 1986 and 1992. Postoperative osteolytic changes around the degrading pin occurred in 21 of 94 (22%) metatarsal heads. In 17 of 21 metatarsal heads, polydioxanone-coated polyglycolide pins were used. This type of pin has not been used since 1988. At follow-up, 16 of 21 osteolytic changes resolved completely and four partially resolved. In the remaining one, the osteolytic area remained visible after 6 year

BackgroundBone grafting is a commonly used adjunct in foot and ankle surgery to enhance osseous healing in fracture fixation and arthrodesis. Although autologous corticocancellous bone is commonly used, donor site morbidity and limited graft availability have driven the development of allogenic alternatives such as demineralized bone matrix (DBM).FormulationsDemineralized bone matrix is produced through decalcification of donor bone, preserving a collagen-rich scaffold and biologically active proteins that support osteoconduction and osteoinduction. Commercial formulations vary in carrier syst

PURPOSE: Along with the improvement in the outcomes of breast cancer treatment being observed in the recent years, long-term studies to assess distant adverse effects of the treatment have become increasingly important. The objective of this study was to assess the foot posture in patients subjected to breast-conserving therapy. The assessment was made 5 years after the surgical procedure.
METHODS: 116 female patients (mean age of 58.75 years) were qualified into a case-control study. Foot posture on the operated breast side (F1) as well as on the contralateral side (F2) was evaluated using a

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis results in postural instability, pain and functional limitations. As rheumatoid arthritis progresses, localised forefoot deformities such as hallux valgus and clawing of the lesser toes occur, leading to a high proportion of people with rheumatoid arthritis wearing sandals. Sandals may affect postural stability due to poor motion control. The aim was to assess two different open-toe sandals on postural stability in people with rheumatoid arthritis.
METHODS: Twenty women with rheumatoid arthritis were assessed in quiet standing under four conditions: (1) open-b

BACKGROUND: Partial or incomplete osteotomy (IO) of the phalanx is recently described in the literature. However, the clinical outcome and the rate of complications when applied to lesser toe deformities (LTD) have been never addressed. This study aims to find out if the association of tenotomies to incomplete or partial phalanx osteotomies has a significant impact on the clinical outcomes, the occurrence of complications, and the recovery time after surgery.
METHODS: A retrospective review of two cohorts of cases operated in our institution for hallux abductus valgus (HAV) and associated LTD

Metatarsus adductus is usually a morphologic feature of the clubfoot or occurs as an isolated defect. Such deformation causes shortening of the medial foot column and lengthening of the lateral. The purpose of the study is a retrospective evaluation of long-term therapeutic effects in a group of patients, who underwent closing wedge cuboid osteotomy and opening wedge medial cuneiform osteotomy. Surgery was performed in 19 persons, procedure was applied to 26 feet, of which 3 presented congenital metatarsus adductus and 23 presented recurrent clubfoot. During ostoetomy we performed additional c

BACKGROUND: Previous research has identified separate sagittal plane instantaneous centers of rotation for the metatarso-phalangeal and metatarso-sesamoid joints, but surprisingly, it does not appear that any have integrated the distinctive morphological characteristics of all three joints and their respective axes into a model that collectively unifies their functional motions. Since all joint motion is defined by its centers of rotation, establishing this in a complicated multi-dimensional structure such as the metatarso-phalangeal-sesamoid joint complex is fundamental to understanding its f

BACKGROUND: Foot alterations have been identified in the literature as a significant risk factor for falls in older adults. However, the contribution of specific types of alterations, such as digital deformities and skin alterations, has not been studied in detail. These findings highlight the importance of improving understanding of podiatric factors that contribute to fall risk.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify which podiatric alterations, such as hyperkeratosis, corns, reduced plantar fat pad, onychomycosis, heel xerosis, and digital deformities, including hallux valgus (HAV), claw

BACKGROUND: Hallux valgus, lesser toe deformity, and muscle weakness of the toe flexors contribute to falls in older people. This study aimed to examine the differences in toe flexor strength and foot morphology in older people requiring long-term care due to changes in the way they mobilize in everyday life.
METHODS: This study included 84 people aged ≥70 years without motor paralysis who underwent rehabilitation. They were divided into those who could mobilize without a wheelchair (walking group, n = 54) and those who used a wheelchair to mobilize (wheelchair group, n = 30). The presence or
