Surgical treatment of frontal sinus fractures: a retrospective evaluation of 116 cases.

There are various treatment options for frontal sinus fractures. They mainly depend on whether the anterior or posterior table and the frontal sinus outflow tract (FSOT) are affected. Our study retrospectively assessed the surgical management of 116 frontal sinus fractures in terms of the different surgical treatment options as well as the resulting complications. In our cohort, all cases of displaced anterior table fractures (n = 73) were treated by open reduction and fixation (ORIF). In cases of posterior table fractures (n = 43), cranialization, obliteration, sinus preserving measures, or n

Impact of extent of parotid resection on postoperative wound complications: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Sialocele and salivary fistula are common complications after parotidectomy. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether extent of parotidectomy influences the incidence of these complications. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of 66 consecutive parotidectomies. Cases undergoing skin or bone resection or flap reconstruction were excluded. Patients were divided into 2 groups based on extent of surgery: group 1 (extracapsular dissection or partial superficial parotidectomy); and group 2 (superficial parotidectomy or more extensive resection). The incidence of

Incidental findings on MRI of the temporomandibular joint.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of incidental findings in MRI of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). METHODS: MRI reports of 730 patients were assessed. The reports were analysed by one consultant and one clinical lecturer in dental and maxillofacial radiology. The prevalence of intracranial and extracranial incidental findings was recorded and categorized. RESULTS: There were 53 (7.3%) incidental findings, of which 11 (1.5%) were intracranial and 42 (5.7%) were extracranial (divided into paranasal sinuses, mastoid air cells, muscle hypertrophy, lymphadenopat

Non-neoplastic cystic lesions of the sellar region presentation, diagnosis and management of eight cases and review of the literature.

The differential diagnosis of a sellar lesion includes pituitary adenoma, cranio-pharyngioma, tumour cyst, benign cyst, and other less common lesions such as aneurysm, squamous cell carcinoma and metastases. Pure cystic lesions within the sella turcica are not uncommon and may appear clinically and radiologically as pituitary adenoma. Intrasellar cysts are broadly classified as neoplastic or non-neoplastic; the latter may be primary lesions of the pituitary fossa or they may arise from the parasellar region and invade into the sella. The lesions occupy space and may cause disturbance of pituit

Computed tomographic evaluation of the cavernous sinus.

In evaluating over 300 patients with sellar and parasellar lesions, the computed tomographic (CT) appearance of the cavernous sinus was studied. Optimal visualization of the cavernous sinus was obtained with continuous contrast enhancement of both axial and coronal tomograms. The coronal projection and reformatted views provided imaging of the cranial nerves within the cavernous sinus. In addition to the physiologic CT appearance of the cavernous sinus, a variety of pathologic conditions are illustrated. CT criteria suggesting an abnormal cavernous sinus are: (1) asymmetry of size; (2) asymmet

Computed tomography or orbital lesions. A cooperative study of 210 cases.

Computed tomography (CT) has given us a new method for examining the orbit and its contents. The technique of examination is described, and the indications for the application of computed tomography in ophthalmology are considered: suspected orbital tumors, unilateral exophthalmos, pareses of the ocular muscles, traumatic lesions and malformations in the region of the orbit. The findings in 210 cases of orbital lesions examined in this study are reported and the differential diagnosis is discussed. Considerable improvement and greater accuracy in diagnosis have been achieved in the field of op

Distribution of oral and maxillofacial lesions in pediatric patients from a Brazilian southeastern population.

OBJECTIVES: Oral lesions affecting infants account for approximately 10% of all samples from diagnostic services and studies investigating the distribution of these lesions in pediatrics from different geographic areas are desired to improve the diagnostic knowledge of clinicians. Therefore, the aim of this study is to describe the distribution of oral lesions in a southeastern Brazilian population. METHODS: The oral pathology files of the University of Campinas was retrospectively reviewed for all cases diagnosed from 2000 to 2014 affecting patients 16-years-old and younger. Data on gender a

Bony Congenital Nasolacrimal Duct Obstruction: A Novel Phenotype of Aplasia of Lacrimal and Major Salivary Glands.

PURPOSE: Aplasia of lacrimal and salivary glands (ALSG) is a syndromic disorder characterized by aplasia of lacrimal and salivary systems. Reported ophthalmic manifestations of ALSG include aplasia of lacrimal glands, punctal agenesis, lacrimal sac mucocele, and membranous congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO). Bony CNLDO, a rare clinical entity, has not been associated with any syndromic disorder. This study investigated the relationship between genetic mutations and bony CNLDO in 3 Chinese families with ALSG. DESIGN: Single-center observational case study. PARTICIPANTS: Three Ch

CT of the inferomedial orbit and the lacrimal drainage apparatus: normal and pathologic anatomy.

The normal and pathologic CT anatomy of the lacrimal drainage apparatus was examined during study of the orbits, nasal cavity, and paranasal sinuses in 100 patients with a variety of clinical complaints related to the inferomedial orbit. The bony lacrimal fossa, the nasolacrimal canal, and the fluid- or air-filled lacrimal sac and nasolacrimal duct were readily recognized in all cases. The lacrimal fossa and sac are found at the inferomedial orbit and are preseptal structures. Cystic expansion of the lacrimal sac (dacryocystitis) may mimic orbital abscess clinically; however, the radiographic

Case of an appendiceal mucinous adenocarcinoma presenting as a left adnexal mass.

INTRODUCTION: Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms represent an exceptionally rare form of pathology with an incidence rate ranging between 0.2 and 0.3% of all appendectomies.(1,2) The most common presentation is right lower quadrant pain with a palpable abdominal mass present in 50% of cases.(8-12) Patients may also present with nausea, vomiting, change in bowel habits, weight loss, appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, ureteral compression, or lower gastrointestinal bleeding. Early diagnosis and proper surgical precautions must be implemented to prevent iatrogenic rupture of the appendix and the w

[Surgical occlusion of cerebrospinal fistulas of the anterior skull base using intrathecal sodium fluorescein].

BACKGROUND: For more than 25 years, intrathecal 5% sodium fluorescein has been routinely used at the University ENT Hospital at Graz during surgical closures of CSF leaks of the anterior skull base. Especially with endoscopic approaches, this technique has been of significant help in identifying and localizing dural defects. No fluorescein-related complications occurred in the series reported. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a retrospective study, indications, techniques, and results of surgical closures of CSF leaks of the anterior skull base are reviewed. During 5 1/2 years from 1990-1995, 72 pati

Long-term follow-up confirms patients with high-risk breast lesions can be successfully managed at a multidisciplinary conferences.

BACKGROUND: The management of high-risk breast lesions is controversial. There is a lack of long-term follow-up studies to evaluate clinical management decisions. METHODS: We included 267 consecutive high-risk breast lesions with pathology-radiology concordance that were prospectively recommended for surgery or follow-up at a multidisciplinary conference. The 267 lesions included 149 papillomas and 118 other high-risk lesions. The 149 papillomas included 119 benign papillomas, 17 atypical papillomas, 6 papillomas with adjacent atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH), 7 papillomas with adjacent atyp

Dacryoscintigraphy: an effective tool in the evaluation of postoperative epiphora.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Dacryoscintigraphy is a grossly underutilized nuclear medicine procedure for assessing the patency of nasolacrimal ducts. It is an alternate noninvasive modality requiring no added expertise when compared with dacryocystography, an invasive radiological counterpart. Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is a surgical procedure in which a patent rhinostomy is made so that a low-pressure lacrimal bypass system is created, thus relieving epiphora, dacryocystitis or mucocele. DCR has been accepted as a highly successful procedure in the management of epiphora from nasolacrimal duct obstr

Respiratory epithelial cysts of the orbit.

To describe post-traumatic and congenital respiratory epithelial cysts in the orbit, which are rare lesions with only 5 and 13 published cases, respectively. We reviewed all cases of respiratory epithelial cysts diagnosed at three institutions (two tertiary referral hospitals, one private clinic) between 1995 and 2015. We describe 10 cases of post-traumatic respiratory epithelial cyst (age range 23 - 82), presenting a mean of 17.4 years after their original trauma; and 3 congenital cases (age range 17-34). All but one case underwent surgical excision of the cyst and its lining, along with any
