The role of Mannose Binding Lectin in the immune response against Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato.

The causative agents of Lyme borreliosis, spirochetes belonging to the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato group, have developed several ways to protect themselves against killing by the host complement system. In addition, it has been shown that serum sensitive isolates are (partially) protected by the Ixodes Tick Salivary Lectin Pathway Inhibitor (TSLPI) protein; a salivary gland protein that inhibits the function of Mannose Binding Lectin (MBL). MBL is a C-type lectin that recognizes oligosaccharides on pathogens and activates the complement system via the lectin pathway. MBL deficiency has bee

Seasonal dynamics of Anaplasma phagocytophila in a rodent-tick (Ixodes trianguliceps) system, United Kingdom.

We investigated the reservoir role of European wild rodents for Anaplasma phagocytophila using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of blood collected from individually tagged rodents captured monthly over 2 years. The only tick species observed in the woodland study site was Ixodes trianguliceps, and ruminant reservoir hosts were not known to occur. A. phagocytophila infections were detected in both bank voles and wood mice but were restricted to periods of peak nymphal and adult tick activity. Most PCR-positive rodents were positive only once, suggesting that rodent infections are genera

Seroprevalence of Q Fever (Coxiellosis) in Small Ruminants of Two Districts in Punjab, Pakistan.

Coxiellosis caused by Coxiella burnetii is a cosmopolitan zoonosis, which causes significant losses through abortions and stillbirths in small ruminants. A cross-sectional seroprevalence study was conducted in two major sheep and goat farming districts of Punjab (Layyah and Muzaffargarh), Pakistan. In total, 542 small ruminants (271 sheep and goats each) of both sexes (60 males and 482 females) of different age groups from 104 flocks (52 flocks of either species) were randomly selected for the collection of sera and related epidemiological information. The sampling plan was devised at the expe

Detection of Leishmania infantum in Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks from Brazil and Italy.

Canine leishmaniosis is a widespread disease caused by Leishmania parasites, which are transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies. However, in some areas where canine leishmaniosis is endemic, but the primary vectors have not been found, ticks have been suspected to play a role in transmitting the infection. Herewith, we report the detection of Leishmania infantum kinetoplast minicircle DNA (kDNA) in ticks collected from naturally infected dogs living in rural areas of Southern Italy (site A) and Northeastern Brazil (site B). Between March and October 2007, ticks were collected from 26 dogs positi

Ixodes ricinus: the potential of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis as a tool for studying host-vector-pathogen interactions.

Ixodes ricinus is a three-host tick, with three active instars. For moulting to occur the tick has to find a host where it can take a blood meal. Throughout feeding I. ricinus can be infected or infect the host with different pathogens, e.g., Tick-Borne Encephalitis virus or Borrelia burgdorferi. The host-vector-pathogen interaction is very complex, making a detailed study difficult. Here we analyse the potential of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) to study the host-vector-pathogen interaction. We examined 20 nymphs, which as larvae parasitised either mouse or hen. After moulting, the

Distribution and prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in Ixodes ricinus ticks of canton Ticino (Switzerland).

Free-living Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected from 12 different sites of canton Ticino, south of the Alps (Switzerland). Each tick was examined for the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (sl), the etiologic agent of Lyme borreliosis using direct fluorescent antibody assay, and isolation of the bacteria. Borreliae were characterized by PCR followed by RFLP. The abundance and infection rates of I. ricinus ticks varied greatly between the areas. Two localities were found free of Borrelia. The prevalence of infected ticks ranged from 5 to 19%. Most ticks (96%) were found infected by < 5

Dermacentor everestianus Hirst, 1926 (Acari: Ixodidae): phylogenetic status inferred from molecular characteristics.

Dermacentor everestianus Hirst, 1926, is only reported in Northwestern China and Nepal. Few researches about this species have been involved, especially for molecular characteristics. The taxonomy studies of D.everestianus are mainly based on morphological features, and its taxonomic status is an ongoing controversy. To clarify the molecular characteristics and phylogenetic status of D.everestianus and other related species, the sequences of mitochondrial 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and cox1 fragments were analyzed in the present study. Analysis of 16S rDNA and cox1 sequences showed 99.3-100% ide

Parasites of importance for human health in Nigerian dogs: high prevalence and limited knowledge of pet owners.

BACKGROUND: Dogs are the most common pet animals worldwide. They may harbour a wide range of parasites with zoonotic potential, thus causing a health risk to humans. In Nigeria, epidemiological knowledge on these parasites is limited. METHODS: In a community-based study, we examined 396 dogs in urban and rural areas of Ilorin (Kwara State, Central Nigeria) for ectoparasites and intestinal helminths. In addition, a questionnaire regarding knowledge and practices was applied to pet owners. RESULTS: Nine ectoparasite species belonging to four taxa and six intestinal helminth species were identi

Migratory songbirds disperse ticks across Canada, and first isolation of the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, from the avian tick, Ixodes auritulus.

During a 3-yr comprehensive study, 196 ixodid ticks (9 species) were collected from 89 passerine birds (32 species) from 25 localities across Canada to determine the distribution of avian-associated tick species and endogenous Lyme disease spirochetes, Borrelia burgdorferi Johnson, Schmid, Hyde, Steigerwalt, and Brenner. We report the following first records of tick parasitism on avian hosts: the rabbit-associated tick, Ixodes dentatus Marx, from Manitoba and Ontario; the mouse tick, Ixodes muris Bishopp and Smith, from British Columbia; and the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis Say, from Ne

Serologic evidence of human Rickettsia infection found in three locations in Panamá.

INTRODUCTION: Since the middle of last century, cases of rickettsiosis have been found in Panamá when outbreaks of murine typhus and spotted fever were reported. Since then, little information exists about its prevalence in this country, since it is most often is misdiagnosed as another disease. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the presence of Rickettsia infections in humans in three locations in Panamá. These locations are agricultural areas, near forested areas or those who work in zoo. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three locations where chosen for this study: Tortí, El Valle d

The Complete Mitogenome of Haemaphysalis parva (Arachnida: Ixodidae) and Comparative Mitogenomics of Haemaphysalis Species.

IntroductionTicks are globally recognised as the second most important vectors of infectious diseases, posing significant threats to human and animal health. Haemaphysalis parva (Acari: Ixodidae) is frequently reported infesting humans and domestic animals and has been experimentally demonstrated to transmit Babesia ovis, with field associations to ovine babesiosis during the colder months. It has also been reported to harbour several zoonotic pathogens, including Coxiella burnetii, Francisella tularensis, and various Rickettsia species. Here, we aim to report the complete mitochondrial genome

Potential of ferritin 2 as an antigen for the development of a universal vaccine for avian mites, poultry red mites, tropical fowl mites, and northern fowl mites.

INTRODUCTION: Poultry red mites (PRMs, Dermanyssus gallinae), blood-sucking ectoparasites, are a threat to the poultry industry because of reduced production caused by infestation. In addition, tropical fowl mites (TFMs, Ornithonyssus bursa) and northern fowl mites (NFMs, Ornithonyssus sylviarum) are hematophagous, distributed in various regions, genetically and morphologically close to PRMs, and cause similar problems to the poultry industry. Vaccine approaches have been studied for PRM control, and several molecules have been identified in PRMs as candidates for effective vaccine antigens. T
