Ensuring food safety and consumer health are crucial elements of sustainable food safety management, requiring the use of substances that inhibit the growth of undesirable microorganisms at various stages of production. The negative impact of many of these on human health and the environment has led to increased interest in alternative solutions, such as plant extracts. The aim of this study was to determine the biological activity of extracts obtained from Nigella sativa seeds using various methods, including Soxhlet and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) using hexane and methanol and super

Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) can complicate the clinical course of COVID-19 and are associated with a significant increase in mortality, especially in critically ill patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU). This narrative review concerns 4099 cases of IFIs in 58,784 COVID-19 patients involved in 168 studies. COVID-19-associated invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA) is a diagnostic challenge because its non-specific clinical/imaging features and the fact that the proposed clinically diagnostic algorithms do not really apply to COVID-19 patients. Forty-seven observational studie

BACKGROUND: Fungal keratitis is a major cause of corneal blindness accounting for more than one-third of microbiologically proven cases. The management of fungal keratitis is through topical or systemic antifungal medications alone or in combination with surgical treatment. Topical medications such as natamycin and voriconazole pose major challenges due to poor penetration across the corneal epithelium. To address the issue various carrier molecules like nanoparticles, lipid vesicles, and cell penetrating peptides were explored. But the major drawback such as non-specificity and lack of bioava

An actinomycete strain NM94 was isolated from a Saharan soil sample by a dilution agar plating method using chitin-vitamins B medium supplemented with penicillin. The strain presented the morphological and chemical characteristics of the genus Nonomuraea. On the basis of 16S rDNA analysis and physiological tests, this isolate was found to be quite different from the known species of Nonomuraea and might be new. The strain NM94 secreted several antibiotics on yeast extract malt extract glucose medium that were active against some Gram-positive bacteria, yeast, and fungi. The antibiotics were ex

The growing burden of fungal diseases on human, animal, plant, and environmental health is a serious global problem that requires a "One Health" approach beyond disciplinary silos. Fungal diseases are often neglected, yet their prevalence and importance are increasing at an alarming rate. Complex interactions among different host organisms, coupled with human activities, anthropogenic environmental impacts, climate change, globalization, and antifungal drug use, particularly in agriculture, are significant contributing factors. The emergence and spread of resistance to existing antifungal agen

INTRODUCTION: Invasive fungal infections (IFI) remain a major therapeutic challenge due to limited antifungal options, emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains and high mortality rates. This has turned up the development of immune-based therapies to restore and/or enhance anti-fungal immune responses into a clinical priority. This is in line with the recent demonstration that antifungal activity of primary (cord blood-derived) NK cells can be potentiated by endowing them with a CD5-based second-generation chimeric antigen receptor (SRCD5CAR) targeting β-glucans, a constitutive and broadl

BACKGROUND: Patients with hematological malignancies are at a high risk of developing invasive fungal infections (IFI) because they undergo several cycles of treatment leading to episodes of neutropenia. In addition, they alternate between hospital stays and periods spent at home. Thus, when an IFI is diagnosed during their hospital stays, it is highly challenging to identify the origin of the fungal contamination. The objective of this study was to analyze at home fungal exposure of 20 patients with leukemia by taking air and water samples in their living residence.
METHODS: Air was sampled

Plant diseases caused by phytopathogens result in huge economic losses in agriculture. In addition, the use of chemical products to control such diseases causes many problems to the environment and to human health. However, some bacteria and fungi have a mutualistic relationship with plants in nature, mainly exchanging nutrients and protection. Thus, exploring those beneficial microorganisms has been an interesting and promising alternative for mitigating the use of agrochemicals and, consequently, achieving a more sustainable agriculture. Microorganisms are able to produce and excrete several

Deoxynivalenol (DON), a mycotoxin produced mainly by Fusarium graminearum and F. culmorum commonly contaminates food commodities across the globe. Due to this, exposure to DON might pose potential health hazards to humans and animals. Biological factors like sex and age can influence the toxicity of DON. However, in toxicological studies involving DON, the sex and age-dependent response has been often overlooked. Thereby, the objective of this study was to evaluate if sex differences are evident in DON's systemic effects in peripubertal rats. Juvenile animals (n = 24) with 28 days postnatal da

Despite the awareness that work in the sewage treatment plant is associated with biological hazards, they have not been fully recognised so far. The research aims to comprehensively evaluate microbiological and toxicological hazards in the air and settled dust in workstations in a sewage treatment plant. The number of microorganisms in the air and settled dust was determined using the culture method and the diversity was evaluated using high-throughput sequencing. Endotoxin concentration was assessed with GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) while secondary metabolites with LC-MS/MS (l

OBJECTIVES: Quinidine has pharmaceutical importance as an antimalarial, antiarrhythmia, antimicrobial, anticancer, antioxidant, astringent, and bitter flavoring agent. Quinidine is in high demand, yet its production from the bark of the quina tree (Cinchona calisaya) is limited. Quinidine production from quina tree fungal endophytes, namely Aspergillus sydowii, Diaporthe sp., Diaporthe lithicola, Fusarium oxysporum, and F. solani is lower than the quinidine content of the tree bark. This study attempted to increase quinidine production from these fungi. This research aimed to determine the opt

BACKGROUND: The incidence of invasive fungal infection is approximately 6 cases per 100 000 persons per year. It is estimated that only half of such infections are detected during the patient's lifetime, making this one of the more common overlooked causes of death in intensive-care patients. The low detection rate is due in part to the complexity of the diagnostic work-up, in which the clinical, radiological, and microbiological findings must be considered. Fungi with resistance to antimycotic drugs have been found to be on the rise around the world.
METHODS: This review is based on pertinen
