Exploratory Analysis of the Effect of Foot Deformities on Hindfoot Alignment Measurement: A Comparison of Second Ray, Ankle Mortise, and Forefoot Alignment on Weight-bearing CT.

BACKGROUND: Accurate hindfoot alignment (HA) assessment is essential for surgical planning of foot and ankle procedures, as measurement errors may lead to inappropriate indication. Weight-bearing computed tomography (WBCT) enables HA assessment through coronal images, typically aligned perpendicular to the second ray. However, this forefoot-based reference may not be appropriate in all clinical scenarios, particularly when isolated hindfoot evaluation is required. This exploratory study sought to evaluate how 3 anatomical reference axes affect HA measurements in patients with different foot de

Anesthetic and airway management for inguinal hernia repair in a pediatric patient with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the progressive heterotopic ossification of soft connective tissues, ultimately leading to cumulative disability and ankylosis. Airway management during general anesthesia in patients with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva is particularly challenging because of anatomical abnormalities and the risk of triggering flare-ups due to minor trauma. However, reports on the anesthetic management of pediatric patients remain limited. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 10-year-old Japanese girl wi

Association of Tarsometatarsal Joint Slippage With Distal Screw Removal After Third-Generation Minimally Invasive Bunion Surgery: A Retrospective Controlled Study.

BackgroundFollowing Minimally Invasive Bunionectomy (MISB), some patients undergo the removal of hardware (ROH) due to medial-sided pain near the distal metatarsal screw site. Medial pain following MISB has been attributed to multiple factors, including hardware prominence, residual medial bony prominence, and construct-specific considerations. One potential radiographic finding observed postoperatively is medial translation of the first metatarsal base at the tarsometatarsal (TMT) joint, referred to here as "TMT slippage." This study investigated the association between postoperative TMT slip

Impact of Foot Surgery and Pharmacological Treatments on Functionality and Pain in Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Five-Year Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) frequently leads to foot deformities, significantly impacting pain, mobility, and quality of life. Surgical and pharmacological treatments are prescribed to manage symptoms, but their long-term effects on foot function remain unclear. This study evaluates the impact of different treatment approaches, including surgery, methotrexate (MTX), and biological therapy (Bio), on foot functionality and pain progression over five years. METHODS: A longitudinal cohort study was conducted with 103 RA patients classified into five groups: surgery, MTX < 10 years, MTX

A Cost Analysis of Opioid/Acetaminophen Therapy Versus a Multidrug, Opioid-Free Multimodal Postoperative Pain Control Regimen.

Background: Opioids are often part of the post-operative pain regimen after orthopaedic surgery. Novel multimodal post-operative pain control regimens have been developed to decrease the amount of opioid usage due to their negative side effects including nausea, constipation, and addiction. The purpose of this study was to compare the cost of postoperative pain management treatment methods after orthopaedic surgery between opioid/acetaminophen therapy and an opioid-free, multidrug, multimodal pathway. Methods: This is a secondary analysis of data collected from 2 IRB approved prospective studi

Factors Affecting Subjective Symptoms in Children with Pes Planovalgus Deformity: A Study Using the Oxford Ankle Foot Questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pes planovalgus is one of the most common foot deformities in children and adolescents. However, there is a discrepancy between subjective symptoms and radiographic severity in idiopathic planovalgus deformity, and very few studies have investigated this aspect. Further, the assessment of subjective symptoms in patients with pes planovalgus requires a quantitative scoring system for making meaningful comparisons, such as the Oxford Ankle Foot Questionnaire for Children (OxAFQ-c) and that for parents (OxAFQ-p). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the fact

The prevalence of foot problems in older women: a cause for concern.

BACKGROUND: Painful feet are an extremely common problem amongst older women. Such problems increase the risk of falls and hamper mobility. The aetiology of painful and deformed feet is poorly understood. METHODS: Data were obtained during a pilot case-control study about past high heel usage in women, in relation to osteoarthritis of the knee. A total of 127 women aged 50-70 were interviewed (31 cases, 96 controls); case-control sets were matched for age. The following information was obtained about footwear: (1) age when first wore shoes with heels 1, 2 and 3 inches high; (2) height of heel

[Arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint using a spherical reamer and titanium compression staples--preliminary report].

BACKGROUND: The role of arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTP I) for the treatment of many primary foot problems or as a salvage procedure is an well accepted procedure. In this study, authors present the results of a surgical technique using spherical reaming and compression with two titanium staples in perpendicular planes to achieve fusion. Compression across arthrodesis site is achieved by difference in width between holes in drill guide and width of titanium staple. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 27 metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodeses were performed in 24 patients with differ

The relationship between knee arthroplasty and foot loading.

Surgeons have questioned whether foot deformity applies abnormal loading on a knee implant. A total of 24 patients with mild knee deformity underwent a static recording of foot loading prior to and at 3 months following knee replacement. Of these patients, 13 had a preoperative varus deformity. The recorded postoperative to preoperative loading in all 6 geographic sites was decreased by an average of 10%. The largest changes were observed in the hallux and lesser toe masks, whereas the postoperative to preoperative foot pressure ratio in the metatarsal head (lateral and medial), heel, and midf

Influence of Shod and Barefoot Running on the In Vivo Kinematics of the First Metatarsophalangeal Joint.

The biomechanics of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) is affected by different shoe conditions. In the biomechanical research field, traditional skin marker motion capture cannot easily acquire the in vivo joint kinematics of the first MTPJ in shoes. Thus, the present study aims to investigate the differences of the first MTPJ's six-degree-of-freedom (6DOF) kinematics between shod and barefoot running by using a high-speed dual fluoroscopic imaging system (DFIS). In total, 15 healthy male runners were recruited. Computed tomography scans were taken from each participant's right foot f
