Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is effective in the destruction of fungi. In order to evaluate the efficacy and safety of PDT for superficial mycoses, we performed an evidence-based review of published literature. Database of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library was searched until March 2010. English-language articles evaluating the efficacy and safety of PDT for superficial mycoses were included. No randomized clinical trials were found. Seven reports described the antifungal effect of PDT against 63 superficial mycoses patients. Eight of 10 (80%) tinea cruris patients and 6 of 10 (60%) tinea ped

The aim of this study was to review all the paraneoplastic syndromes of primary tumours of the oral cavity. Metastatic tumours of the mouth and primary tumours of the oropharynx (including tonsils), and major salivary glands were excluded. The primary search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus and EMBASE, and included every paraneoplastic syndrome from a primary oral tumour described in English, French, or German papers during the last 20 years. The secondary search was conducted by handpicking articles from reviews on paraneoplastic syndromes of the head and neck. The aim of the tertiary search w

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) has been divided into the "extrinsic" and "intrinsic" type, in which "intrinsic AD" is characterized by the absence of allergen-specific IgE. Still, there is no consensus whether this "intrinsic type" of AD, which we denominate as atopiform dermatitis (AFD), is a distinct entity.
OBJECTIVE: A case-control study was performed to compare the clinical and diagnostic features of AD and AFD.
METHODS: Patients with a clinical diagnosis of AD were selected. Cases did not have demonstrable allergen-specific IgE. Matched control subjects were tested positive for all

BACKGROUND: Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a) is a proinflammatory cytokine that plays an immunomodulatory role in a variety of systemic and dermatologic diseases. Currently, three anti-TNF-a drugs are available in North America- infliximab (approved in the U.S. for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, ankylosing spondylitis, ulcerative colitis, and psoriatic arthritis), etanercept (approved in the U.S. for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and psoriasis), and adalimumab (approved for the trea

Yeasts of Malassezia, members of the microbiologic flora of the skin, cause pityriasis versicolor and have also been implicated in the pathogenesis of other superficial dermatoses; the most important ones are seborrheic dermatitis, folliculitis, and atopic dermatitis. The mechanisms by which the yeasts cause these dermatoseş however, are not yet clear, and there have been no studies on the interaction between fungi and keratinocytes, especially the effects of fungi on the production of cytokines by human keratinocytes. Recently, the genus Malassezia has been expanded to seven species based on

UNLABELLED: FREQUENT DIVERSE COMPLICATIONS: Skin problems in organ recipients mainly result from the induced immunosuppression but also from specific adverse effects of immunosuppressive drugs. The degree of extension and gravity of the clinical manifestations are often proportional to the intensity and/or duration of the immunosuppressive therapy. Immunodepression mainly leads to infectious and neoplastic complications.
INFECTIONS: Viral and fungal infections are the most frequently encountered. Herpes simplex and zoster infections require treatment to prevent visceral involvement. Human pap

Malassezia spp., the causative agents of pityriasis versicolor, are members of the normal human cutaneous microflora. Utilizing a combination of both enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and bioassay, we have investigated the ability of both formalin-preserved and viable Malassezia (serovars A, B and C) to modulate pro-inflammatory cytokine (IL-6, IL-1beta and TNF-alpha) release by human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNC) in vitro, over a 48-h co-incubation period. The results demonstrated that formalin-preserved Malassezia (serovars A, B and C) at mid-exponential phase were gener

We studied 222 skin biopsies of mycosis fungoides and Sézary syndrome (cutaneous T-cell lymphoma [CTCL]) to document the huge histologic spectrum and to evaluate the earliest histologic changes. Our results indicate that CTCL produces practically all of the patterns used for diagnosing inflammatory skin disease: superficial or superficial and deep perivascular without epidermal changes; spongiotic; psoriasiform, with or without a lichenoid infiltrate; interface, including lichenoid without vacuolar alteration, lichenoid with vacuolar alteration, and vacuolar alteration without a lichenoid infi

BACKGROUND: Advances in our understanding of the molecular genetics of lymphocyte antigen receptors (B-cell immunoglobulin and T-cell antigen receptor), have led to the application of molecular biologic techniques to molecularly characterize lymphocytic infiltrates of the skin. Molecular diagnosis refers to the application of these techniques as a diagnostic aid in the clinicopathologic evaluation of cutaneous lymphocytic infiltrates.
OBSERVATION: Molecular studies have clinical application in the determination of lineage and detection of retroviruses in cutaneous lymphoid neoplasms, distingu

Terbinafine is an orally and topically active allylamine antifungal agent with a primarily fungicidal action in vitro. Its spectrum of in vitro activity includes a broad range of dermatophyte, filamentous, dimorphic and dematiaceous fungi, and some yeast species. In clinical trials, mycological and overall efficacy rates of around 90 and 80%, respectively, have been achieved in cutaneous dermatophyte infections (tinea corporis/cruris and tinea pedis) with terbinafine, administered either orally (250 or 500 mg/day) or topically (a 1% cream applied twice daily). Similar rates of cure have been o

AR can be regarded as the most severe variant of the spectrum of chronic actinic dermatitis. The exact etiology is still unknown, but is probably multifactorial, involving contact allergic, photoallergenic, phototoxic, immunologic, and metabolic factors. A diagnosis of AR should only be made when the following criteria are present: (1) persistent infiltrated papules and plaques on light-exposed skin, often with extension to covered areas or generalized infiltrated erythroderma; (2) photosensitivity to a broad spectrum of wavelengths, including UV-B, UV-A, and part of the visible spectrum; and

Erythemato-squamous diseases (ESDs) possess overlapping clinical manifestations and diverse histopathological profiles, thus presenting diagnostic challenges. There remains a need for improved diagnostic approaches that integrate clinical and histopathological features. The objective of these studies is to investigate the relative value of clinical versus histopathological features in distinguishing among six ESD classes. The University of California, Irvine (UCI) Dermatology dataset includes 366 patients diagnosed with one of six ESDs and their corresponding clinical and histopathological fea

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous morbidities are not uncommon in correctional centres and environmental cleanliness and sanitation practices influence their prevalence and pattern. Overcrowding and poor living conditions are common in correctional facilities and may increase the prevalence of skin diseases amongst inmates. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and pattern of dermatoses in a correctional centre in southern Nigeria.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was an institutional-based cross-sectional descriptive study carried out during a health outreach to the facility involving inmates of

The vast majority of publications in dermatology refer to lightly pigmented skin, with few addressing the peculiarities of black skin. In addition there is no consensus on what it means to be black in different regions of the world. The lack of knowledge on the subject makes it difficult to recognize and manage dermatoses in this type of skin. This article aims to review the literature on intrinsic characteristics, as well as epidemiological and clinical aspects of the cutaneous manifestations of different dermatoses in black skin. It was found that there are sometimes striking differences, in

BACKGROUND: Gain-of-function mutations in CARD14 have recently been shown to be involved in the pathogenesis of psoriasis and pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP). Those mutations were found to activate the NF-kB signaling pathway.
OBJECTIVE: Zebrafish is often used to model human diseases in general, and in skin disorders more particularly. In the present study, we aimed to examine the effect of CARD14 overexpression in zebrafish with the aim to validate this model for future translational applications.
METHODS: We used light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, histological analysis and who
