Effect of Auxiliary Devices on the Accuracy of Complete‑Arch Implant Digital Impressions: An in Vitro Study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of the auxiliary device in acquiring implant and soft tissue data using intraoral scanning and its influence on the accuracy of digital impressions for edentulous implants. METHODS: Three standardized implant models for edentulism, categorized as 2-4, 2-5 and 2-4-6, were designed and printed based on the distribution of implants. Various auxiliary devices were designed for each model, and an artificial gingiva with cube-like marking points was created to test the completeness of soft tissue information capture. The models were scanned using an extraoral

Anatomic feasibility of a modular Endo-Bentall stent graft system for type A aortic dissection.

OBJECTIVE: The implementation of thoracic endovascular aortic repair in patients with type A aortic dissection has been strictly constrained due to the pulsatile movement and distensibility and the insufficient length of landing zones on ascending aorta. The most prevalent anatomical limitation is the insufficient length of proximal and distal landing zones. We propose a modularly designed Endo-Bentall stent graft system to broaden the scope of thoracic endovascular aortic repair in the ascending aorta by covering intimal tears in the aortic root and ascending aorta and reconstructing coronary

Extracellular DNA and Type IV Pilus Expression Regulate the Structure and Kinetics of Biofilm Formation by Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae.

Biofilms formed in the middle ear by nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHI) are central to the chronicity, recurrence, and refractive nature of otitis media (OM). However, mechanisms that underlie the emergence of specific NTHI biofilm structures are unclear. We combined computational analysis tools and in silico modeling rooted in statistical physics with confocal imaging of NTHI biofilms formed in vitro during static culture in order to identify mechanisms that give rise to distinguishing morphological features. Our analysis of confocal images of biofilms formed by NTHI strain 86-028NP us

Contributions of lower extremity kinematics to trunk accelerations during moderate treadmill running.

BACKGROUND: Trunk accelerations during running provide useful information about movement economy and injury risk. However, there is a lack of data regarding the key biomechanical contributors to these accelerations. The purpose was to establish the biomechanical variables associated with root mean square (RMS) accelerations of the trunk. METHODS: Eighteen healthy males (24.0 ± 4.2 yr; 1.78 ± 0.07 m; 79.7 ± 14.8 kg) performed treadmill running with high resolution accelerometer measurement at the lumbar spine and full-body optical motion capture. We collected 60 sec of data at three speeds (2.

A comparison between various radiological techniques in the localization and analysis of impacted and supernumerary teeth.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: An increasing number of different types of commercial cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) devices are available for three-dimensional (3D) imaging in the field of dental and maxillofacial radiology. When removing impacted or supernumerary teeth, surgical teams often operate adjacent significant anatomical structures such as nerves, vessels, adjacent teeth roots, and paranasal sinuses. It is therefore important to choose the appropriate surgical approach to avoid iatrogenic damage to the essential anatomical neighbouring structures. CBCT, also called digital volume t

Growth restriction of cranial sutures in the fetal lamb causes deformational changes, not craniosynostosis.

Newborns with in utero cranial vault molding can present with severe forms of plagiocephaly. Intrauterine constraint has been proposed as one cause for craniosynostosis. The purpose of this experiment was to investigate whether rigid plate fixation across a fetal cranial suture, representing a severe form of growth restriction in utero, would lead to cranial suture fusion in a fetal lamb model. Six fetal lambs at 85 to 95 days gestation (term = 145 days) underwent laparotomy, hysterotomy, fetal coronal scalp incision, and miniplate screw fixation across the right coronal suture in utero. Two u

High-Density Surface Electromyography Excitation of Prime Movers Across Scapular Positions in the Seated Row.

Objectives: The present study compared the amplitude and spatial distribution of muscle excitation between a seated row performed with a fixed scapular position (fixed-SR) and a free scapular position (free-SR) in resistance-trained men, analyzing concentric and eccentric phases separately using high-density surface EMG (HD-sEMG). Methods: Fourteen resistance-trained males (age: 25 ± 4 years; stature: 1.74 ± 0.06 m; body mass: 76.22 ± 5.73 kg) performed fixed-SR and free-SR in a randomized cross-over design using 8-repetition maximum as the load for both variations. HD-sEMG grids recorded the

A Case Report of Prehospital Point-Of-Care Ultrasound in Acute Aortic Dissection: Reinforcing the Out-of-Hospital Chain of Survival.

This case report highlights the importance of prehospital point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) when acute aortic dissection is suspected. At 2:09 pm the local emergency medical services (EMS) received a call from a small town in Lombardy, Italy, reporting that a 54-years-old man had collapsed while lifting weights in a fitness club. Response teams found him lying on the floor, fully responsive and very pale; he was a lean man, with no allergies, no home therapy and no significant past medical history. He had had a transient facial paralysis and complained of dizziness and mild chest discomfort. Du

Feasibility study of ultrasound-guided percutaneous laser discectomy for cervical radicular pain.

Percutaneous laser discectomy is one common and effective treatment for cervical radicular pain. Currently, the surgery is performed with blind cannulation technique, mainly relies on the experience of surgeon. However, it still remains unsafe and difficult to reach the target. As an alternative, ultrasound-guided cannulation provides visualization of important structures, thus increasing the precision and safety. The primary goal of this study is to report the detail of the ultrasound-guided technique in the percutaneous laser cervical discectomy. The secondary purpose is to evaluate the feas

Anatomic zone division and clinical significance of the lumbar sinuvertebral nerves.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Discogenic low-back pain (DLBP) is one of the primary causes of low back pain (LBP) and is associated with internal disc disruptions and is mainly transmitted by the sinuvertebral nerve (SVN). The lack of a universal understanding of the anatomical characteristics of the SVN has compromised surgical treatment for DLPB. PURPOSE: This study aims to elaborate on the anatomical characteristics of the SVN and to discuss their possible clinical significance. STUDY DESIGN: The SVNs were dissected and immunostained in ten human lumbar specimens. METHODS: The SVNs at the segments

Anterior opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy for restoring posterior tibial slope in PCL insufficiency and genu recurvatum: A narrative review.

Sagittal plane tibial geometry is a critical and modifiable determinant of outcomes in posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) insufficiency and genu recurvatum. The posterior tibial slope normally ranges from 7° to 10°, and pathological mechanics arise when it falls below 5° or becomes reversed. In PCL insufficiency, a flattened slope substantially increases graft failure risk, with long-term data demonstrating markedly reduced 10-year survival for patients with severely flattened medial and lateral slopes. Biomechanically, tibial slope exerts a linear, independently significant effect on PCL graft

3D MRI of the cervical spine: low flip angle FISP vs. Gd-DTPA TurboFLASH in degenerative disk disease.

The authors undertook this study to compare bright and dark CSF three-dimensional (3D) gradient-echo (GE) MR techniques to answer the following questions: Could a single Gd-DTPA enhanced T1-weighted GE volume sequence (with multiplanar reformats) be diagnostically equivalent for degenerative cervical disk disease to a standard sequence consisting of sagittal T1-weighted spin echo and axial low flip angle volume GE images (with reformatted images)? Does performing oblique coronal reformats perpendicular to the course of exiting cervical nerve roots improve diagnostic confidence over axial image

Assessing the Validity and Reliability of a Markerless Motion Capture System for Sagittal-Plane Gait Range of Motion.

INTRODUCTION: Optical three-dimensional (3D) motion capture systems and inertial measurement unit (IMU)-based systems provide accurate kinematic measurements, yet both remain costly and require complex setups. Artificial intelligence (AI)-driven markerless systems that operate with a single smartphone offer a practical alternative. In this study, we evaluated the validity and reliability of a markerless motion capture system (SPLYZA Motion; SPLYZA Inc., Shizuoka, Japan) for sagittal-plane gait analysis relative to an IMU-based 3D system (Ultium Motion; Noraxon Inc., Scottsdale, AZ, USA). Single-position OLIF combined with percutaneous posterior fixation under O-arm navigation for the treatment of grade II lumbar spondylolisthesis: clinical and radiologic outcomes.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Grade II lumbar spondylolisthesis is frequently accompanied by segmental instability, intervertebral disc degeneration, and nerve root compression. When conservative management fails, surgery is generally warranted. Therefore, we conducted a retrospective study to evaluate the clinical and radiologic outcomes of single-position OLIF combined with percutaneous posterior fixation under O-arm navigation for the treatment of Grade II lumbar spondylolisthesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 87 patients with Grade II lumbar spondylolisthesis w

Comparison of Different 3D Surface Registration-Based Methods to Assess Facial Asymmetry.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Facial asymmetry is gaining an increasing diagnostic interest in many clinical contexts. Several three-dimensional surface-based methods have been proposed for its assessment; however, they might provide non-equivalent data. Since there is a lack of comparative studies in these terms, this study aims to compare three methods for assessing the asymmetry of the face and facial thirds, thus addressing whether the potential differences can be considered clinically acceptable or not. METHODS: Two 'maxillofacial' methods based on the trigeminal nerve distribution and one 'ort
