Between 1981 and 1992, the Centers for Disease Control collected and summarized 9,223 cases of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) reported from 46 states. Four states (North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and South Carolina) accounted for 48% of the reports. The annual incidence per million U.S. population decreased from a high in 1981 of 5.2 to a low in 1992 of 2.0, primarily due to decreased incidence in the southeast. Case report forms were filed on 7,650 patients, of whom 4,217 had laboratory-confirmed RMSF. The age group with the highest incidence was those 5-9 years of age. Most cases (

In summer 2008, two fatal cases were observed in Northeastern Greece: a Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) case (first report in Greece) and a Mediterranean spotted fever case. In total, 537 ticks removed from humans who referred for this reason to the two hospitals of the region during June-September 2008 were identified. The vast majority of them (81.5%) were Rhipicephalus sanguineus, which is the main vector of Rickettsia conorii, while Hyalomma marginatum, the main vector of CCHF virus, accounted for 5.2%. The increased aggressiveness of R. sanguineus might be related to the weather co

PURPOSE: In the clinical setting, it is not common practice to consider a vector bite, such as from a tick or flea, to be a contributing factor to chronic digestive symptoms. This article investigates associations we have observed among symptomatic patients and positive blood tests for vector-borne illness (VBI).
METHODS: Patients who visited an urban gastroenterology clinic over a 3-year period were retrospectively reviewed. A total of 270 patients presenting with a constellation of digestive symptoms - and who had no apparent digestive pathology and reported no prior diagnosis or treatments

Sandfly fever is an infectious disease transmitted to people through sandfly bites. It usually takes three days and causes chills, high fever, headache, nausea-vomiting and myalgia. The causative agent, namely sandfly fever virus (SFV), is a member of the Bunyaviridae family, Phlebovirus genus. Toscana virus (TOSV) is a serotype of SFV, as so Sicilian and Naples viruses. Seroprevalence studies have demonstrated that SFV infections which have mild symptoms or asymptomatic, can be overcome. Studies concerning TOSV infections in Turkey are limited to a small number of regional seroprevalence surv

While fleas are often perceived simply as a biting nuisance and a cause of allergic dermatitis, they represent important disease vectors worldwide, especially for bacterial zoonoses such as plague (transmitted by rodent fleas) and some of the rickettsioses and bartonelloses. The cosmopolitan cat (Ctenocephalides felis) and dog (Ctenocephalides canis) fleas, as well as Ctenocephalides orientis (restricted to tropical and subtropical Asia), breed in human dwellings and are vectors of cat-scratch fever (caused by Bartonella spp.) and Rickettsia spp., including Rickettsia felis (agent of fle

Dear Editors, A 37-year-old man from a Lyme disease-endemic area presented with a one-week old rapidly expanding rash on his right calf. He lacked other comorbidities or symptoms such as fever, weakness, lack of appetite, or joint pain, but recalled removing a tick from the same region three weeks earlier. Inspection revealed a round, bluish-red erythematous patch with a central clearing (Figure 1). The patient experienced no discomfort, but the rash was warm and faded easily when palpated. Dermatoscopic inspection revealed collarette-shaped white scales encircling the punctum of the tick bite

Human granulocytic anaplasmosis is an obligate intra-granulocytic parasite that is transmitted by Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes pacificus in North America. We report on the second laboratory-confirmed case of Anaplasma phagocytophilum acquired within the province of Alberta, Canada. A 67-year-old woman from the Edmonton health zone developed nonspecific systemic symptoms including fatigue, night sweats, myalgia, headaches, and fever 6 days after noticing a tick on her left upper arm in May of 2017 (day 0). On day 13, she was found to have thrombocytopenia. Her symptoms progressed until day 16 w

BACKGROUND: Tick transmission of Borrelia spirochetes to humans results in significant morbidity from Lyme disease worldwide. Serum concentrations of antibodies against outer surface protein A (OspA) were shown to correlate with protection from infection with Borrelia burgdorferi, the primary cause of Lyme disease in the United States.
METHODS: Mice transgenic for human immunoglobulin genes were immunized with OspA from B. burgdorferi to generate human monoclonal antibodies (HuMabs) against OspA. HuMabs were generated and tested in in vitro borreliacidal assays and animal protection assays.

Clinical symptoms were studied in 161 consecutive patients with erythema chronicum migrans Afzelius and in a follow-up study signs of late manifestations were investigated. General symptoms such as headache, fever, myalgia and/or arthralgia were found in about half of the patients with a disease duration of less than or equal to 3 weeks. Three patients had coexisting lymphadenosis benigna cutis. Two untreated patients developed meningitis/meningoradiculitis and one untreated patient arthritis. The importance of a sufficient antibiotic therapy to prevent late manifestations is stressed. Althoug

BACKGROUND: Babesiosis is an infectious disease caused by protozoa of the apicomplexan phylum, genus Babesia. It is a malaria-like parasitic disease that can be transmitted via tick bites. The apicomplexan phylum of eukaryotic microbial parasites has had detrimental impacts on human and veterinary medicine. There are only a few drugs currently available to treat this disease; however, parasitic strains that are resistant to these commercial drugs are increasing in numbers. Plasmodium and Babesia are closely related as they share similar biological features including mechanisms for host cell in

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review is to assist the readers, anesthesiologists, intensivists, and emergency physicians in making a more accurate diagnosis of perioperative fever or hyperthermia and subsequently choose the proper course of treatment.
AIM: To identify the many sources of perioperative fever and after a more accurate differential diagnosis, select appropriate treatment options. Most anesthesiologists, intensivists, and emergency physicians are not familiar with an expansive differential of perioperative fever. This article attempts to expose these physicians to that differ

Neuroborreliosis is part of advanced stage of Lyme disease and often characterized by damage to the cranial and/or peripheral nerves. Involvement of one or both recurrent nerves is rare. Diagnosis is often difficult and based on a set of clinical manifestations, biological arguments, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis. A 70-year-old man was referred to our Voice Clinic with a 3-month history of dysphonia caused by right vocal fold paralysis (VFP) without any cutaneous symptoms of tick bite or erythema migrans in the previous weeks and normal initial radiological examination (neck and thora

West Nile virus (WNV), a member of Flaviviridae family, is an enveloped, icosahedral, single-stranded positive-sense RNA virus. WNV is transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoe (especially Culex spp.) bites and cause a variety of clinical outcomes, ranging from asymptomatic infection to severe meningoencephalitis. The aims of this study were to determine and confirm the WNV seroprevalence in a chosen healthy population and to provide epidemiological data for Turkey about the recent status of the infection at our region. A total of 1200 serum samples collected from blood donors (400 were fema

INTRODUCTION: Panarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a systemic vasculitis affecting small and medium-sized arteries. Neuro-ophthalmological complications of PAN are rare but numerous, and may affect the eye, the visual and the oculomotor pathways. Such complications occur mainly in patients previously diagnosed with PAN.
OBSERVATION: A 51-year-old woman presented with an isolated right trochlear (IV) palsy, in the setting of headaches and fluctuating fever of unknown etiology. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate was 13 mm and full blood cell count was normal. Previous chest X-ray and blood studies were neg

The overall failure rate of standard therapeutic options for late/chronic/persistent borreliosis emphasizes the need for novel therapeutic strategies. In this report, we are presenting a novel therapeutic option based on a new technology, Induced Native Phage Therapy (INPT; PhagenCorp, LLC, Sarasota, FL), and its ability to facilitate the elimination of infection more rapidly, efficiently, and with less harm to the patient than conventional treatments. Borrelia species in the environment are themselves always infected by their own type of Borrelia bacteriophages. Both the Borrelia spirochete a

The aim of the study was to evaluate relationship between initial manifestation of Lyme borreliosis and further course of the disease. Files and questionnaires regarding present and past course of the disease were evaluated in 138 residents of Białowieza village, suffering previously from Lyme borreliosis. Present arthralgia was the most frequently reported by persons who initially were diagnosed as suffering from Lyme arthritis. Ischialgia and brachialgia were the most prevalent in patients with previous neuroboreliosis. Psychiatric evaluation demonstrated significantly more frequent prevalen
