Superficial mycoses and HIV infection in Yaounde.

The incidence of superficial infections in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is increasing in Yaounde. To determine the prevalence of superficial mycoses in HIV-positive subjects, a study was carried out in different hospital settings in Yaounde over a period of 18 months. Clinical observations were followed by the culture of samples on Sabouraud's glucose agar. Of the 148 HIVab-positive patients examined, 79 (44 males and 35 females) had at least one superficial mycosis (53%). The clinical presentations and the causative organisms did not differ from those found in immunocompet

Improved diagnosis and prognosis of mucormycosis. A clinicopathologic study of 33 cases.

Mucormycosis is an uncommon, frequently fatal, fungal infection which rarely arises in otherwise healthy people (15, 18, 92). An underlying disease, frequently diabetes mellitus, is almost always present. It appears stereotypically in different anatomic sites: paranasal, rhinoorbital, rhinocerebral, cerebral, pulmonary, and gastrointestinal areas; and in the soft tissue of the extremities. It can also appear as disseminated disease. Tissue invasion by the hyphae of mucormycosis must be seen microscopically to establish the diagnosis, but culture is required to identify the fungal species invol

Essential Oil Components Incorporated Emulsion Hydrogels for Eradicating Dermatophytosis Caused by Pathogenic Fungi Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Microsporum canis.

Dermatophytosis is a prevalent fungal infection and public health burden, majorly caused by the attack of zoophilic fungi genera of Trichophyton and Microsporum. Among them, T. mentagrophytes and M. canis are the dominating pathogens that cause dermatophytosis in humans. Though anti-fungal treatments are available, the widespread drug resistance and minimal efficacy of conventional therapies cause recurring infections. In addition, prolonged anti-fungal medications induce several systemic side effects, including hepatotoxicity and leucopenia. The anti-dermatophytic formulation of biocompatible

Metagenomic next-generation sequencing of viruses, bacteria, and fungi in the epineurium of the facial nerve with Bell's palsy patients.

Bell's palsy (BP) represents a major cause leading to facial paralysis in the world. The etiology of BP is still unknown, and virology is the prevailing theory. The purpose of this study is to explore the pathogenic microorganisms that may be related to BP, and it is of great significance to study the pathogenesis and treatment of BP. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) detection was performed in the epineurium of the facial nerve of 30 BP patients who underwent facial nerve epineurium decompression. A total of 84 pathogenic microorganisms were detected in 30 clinical samples, includ

The impact of human immunodeficiency virus-related diseases on pigmented skin types.

Infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a significant problem globally. Early diagnosis and treatment with antiretroviral drugs has considerably improved health outcomes and decreased disease-related morbidity. HIV infection is associated with a wide range of skin disorders enabling dermatologists to diagnose HIV as well as associated opportunistic infections early in the course of disease. Despite concerted efforts by international health organizations to limit disease incidence, the prevalence of HIV infection remains high and is highest in sub-Saharan Africa. The diagnosis

Isolation of Microsporum gallinae from a fighting cock (Gallus gallus domesticus) in Japan.

A case of tinea corporis caused by Microsporum gallinae was found in 2011 in Okinawa, located in the southern part of Japan. The patient was a 96-year-old, otherwise healthy, Japanese man, who had been working as a breeder of fighting cocks for more than 70 years. He was bitten on his right forearm by one of the cocks and a few weeks later, two erythematous macules appeared on the right forearm, accompanied by a slight itchy sensation. While the first isolate of this dermatophyte was recovered from the region by Miyasato et al. in 2011, it was not obtained from the same fighting cock owned by

Necrotizing cutaneous mucormycosis after a tornado in Joplin, Missouri, in 2011.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a fungal infection caused by environmentally acquired molds. We investigated a cluster of cases of cutaneous mucormycosis among persons injured during the May 22, 2011, tornado in Joplin, Missouri. METHODS: We defined a case as a soft-tissue infection in a person injured during the tornado, with evidence of a mucormycete on culture or immunohistochemical testing plus DNA sequencing. We conducted a case-control study by reviewing medical records and conducting interviews with case patients and hospitalized controls. DNA sequencing and whole-genome sequencing were pe

Cutaneous fusariosis developing in a post-irradiation site.

Cutaneous fusariosis is an opportunistic mycosis in immunocompromised patients. We present a novel variation of an immunocompromised patient who developed fusariosis in a previously irradiated site. Irradiation led to atrophy, contraction, fibrosis, barrier disruption, and an altered dermal environment in which the infection developed. Significantly, this is the first case report of fusariosis in a previously irradiated site of an immunocompromised patient. Treatment included debridement and voriconazole.

Cutaneous colesional acquired immunodeficiency syndrome associated Kaposi sarcoma and cryptococcosis.

The clinicopathologic features of 4 AIDS patients with cutaneous colesional Kaposi sarcoma (KS) and cryptococcosis, a rare phenomenon, are described. Biopsies from 3 patients who were highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART)-naive demonstrated predominant KS with a conspicuous spindle cell component and small aggregates of cryptococcal yeasts in 2 biopsies and predominant gelatinous cryptococcosis with attenuated KS spindle cells in 1 biopsy. One patient was HAART exposed. He had childhood pulmonary tuberculosis, was treated for disseminated cutaneous cryptococcosis 18 months earlier and p

Anti-inflammatory effects of lithium gluconate on keratinocytes: a possible explanation for efficiency in seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Topical lithium (Li) gluconate has a beneficial effect on seborrhoeic dermatitis (SD), unlike oral lithium (Li) used in psychiatry. SD is an inflammatory dermatitis associated, in most of cases, with colonization by lipophilic yeasts of the genus Malassezia. However, the exact mechanism of action of Li gluconate in SD still remains unknown. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of topical Li on cytokine secretion and innate immunity. For this purpose, we investigated first the modulatory effect of Li on two pro-inflammatory and two anti-inflammatory cytokine secretion and second,

Steroid acne vs. Pityrosporum folliculitis: the incidence of Pityrosporum ovale and the effect of antifungal drugs in steroid acne.

BACKGROUND: Steroid acne is a folliculitis that can result from systemic or topical administration of steroid, and has been described as showing a similar clinical picture to Pityrosporum folliculitis, but there have been few reports about the incidence of Pityrosporum ovale and the effect of antimycotic drugs in steroid acne and other acneiform eruptions. Our purpose was to describe the association between steroid acne and P. ovale, and to confirm the superior efficacy of oral antifungal drugs over anti-acne drugs in the treatment of steroid acne. METHODS: The history, clinical features dire

[Digestive histoplasmosis in a patient with AIDS from Guadeloupe].

The authors report the case of a 45-year-old HIV and HTLV1 antibody positive male patient form French West-Indies who was infected by disseminated histoplasmosis presenting as acute diarrhea. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed gastric mass and colonoscopy patchy erythematous mucosa. The diagnosis was made by histology of bone marrow specimens, upper gastrointestinal tract and colon biopsies, and late skin lesions. Initial therapy with amphotericin B and itraconazole was successful, but maintenance therapy with itraconazole alone did not prevent relapse and a fatal outcome. Disseminated histop

Phaeohyphomycosis caused by the fungal genera Bipolaris and Exserohilum. A report of 9 cases and review of the literature.

We have reported 7 new cases of Bipolaris infection and 2 of Exserohilum infection, which demonstrate the capability of these 2 genera to cause invasive as well as "allergic" disease. As noted previously, it is likely that all of the cases of "Helminthosporium" and Drechslera infections reported in the literature were caused by Bipolaris or Exserohilum. Infections due to these 2 genera are probably more common than previously recognized. They should be included in the differential diagnosis of central nervous system and disseminated fungal disease, sinusitis, keratitis, peritonitis associated
