BACKGROUND: Midcarpal arthrodesis (MCA) with excision of the scaphoid is in our opinion a reliable procedure. Pitfalls and unsatisfactory results can be attributed to technical shortcomings during the operation or to poor indication.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1993 to 2001, 64 MCA were performed in 62 patients. Patients' subjective assessment of the results were evaluated according to the clinical records and telephone interviews concerning pain, function and patient satisfaction. In this retrospective case control/comparison study, we compared the clinical and radiological outcomes in patients with chronic scapholunate dissociation treated with three-ligament tenodesis (3 LT) versus scapholunate and intercarpal ligamentoplasty (SLICL). PURPOSE: Scaphoid fractures are classified according to their 2-dimensional radiographic appearance, and transverse waist fractures are considered the most common. Our hypothesis was that most scaphoid fractures are not perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the scaphoid (ie, not transverse).

Background Single- or bicolumn limited intercarpal fusion, also called one- or two-column fusion, has been introduced as an alternative to four-corner fusion. OBJECTIVE: Missed tears of the scapholunate ligament (SLL) and scapholunate dissociation (SLD) after wrist injuries pose a high risk of post-traumatic osteoarthritis of the carpus.
