Povidone-Iodine Antimicrobial Activity In Vitro Against Periodontal Bacterial Pathogens.

Background Povidone-iodine (PV-I) is known to be active in vitro against periodontal bacterial pathogens, but previous studies most often used ≥5-minute contact times for PV-I testing and/or evaluated laboratory reference strains of bacterial species. This study further examined the antimicrobial effects of PV-I by using a 60-second in vitro treatment time for 10% and 5% PV-I on freshly recovered clinical isolates of subgingival biofilm bacteria from severe human periodontitis lesions. Methods Subgingival biofilm samples from 22 adults with severe periodontitis were mixed in vitro with 10% PV-

Oral Bacterial and Fungal Microbiome and Subsequent Risk for Pancreatic Cancer.

IMPORTANCE: The oral microbiota may be involved in the development of pancreatic cancer, yet current evidence is largely limited to bacterial 16S amplicon sequencing and small retrospective case-control studies. OBJECTIVE: To test whether the oral bacterial and fungal microbiome is associated with the subsequent development of pancreatic cancer. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used data from 2 epidemiological cohorts: the American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study-II Nutrition Cohort and the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial. Among cohor

Gut Microbiome in Patients With Early-Stage and Late-Stage Melanoma.

IMPORTANCE: The gut microbiome modulates the immune system and responses to immunotherapy in patients with late-stage melanoma. It is unknown whether fecal microbiota profiles differ between healthy individuals and patients with melanoma or if microbiota profiles differ among patients with different stages of melanoma. Defining gut microbiota profiles in individuals without melanoma and those with early-stage and late-stage melanoma may reveal features associated with disease progression. OBJECTIVE: To characterize and compare gut microbiota profiles between healthy volunteers and patients wi

Oral bacteria induce a differential activation of human immunodeficiency virus-1 promoter in T cells, macrophages and dendritic cells.

INTRODUCTION: The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can integrate into T cells, macrophages and dendritic cells resulting in a latent infection. Reports have also demonstrated that various microbial and host cell factors can trigger HIV reactivation leading to HIV recrudescence, potentially undermining highly active antiretroviral therapies. METHODS: This study evaluated the capacity of oral bacteria associated with chronic periodontal infections to stimulate HIV promoter activation in various cell models of HIV latency. RESULTS: T cells (1G5) challenged with oral bacteria demonstrated a do

Photodynamic therapy of persistent pockets in maintenance patients-a clinical study.

The aim of this study was to compare the short-term performance of a session of single photodynamic therapy (PDT) and of a conventional ultrasonic debridement (UST) in persistent pockets of maintenance patients. In a prospective, randomized, controlled, single-blind clinical study, patients with chronic periodontitis with at least two persistent pockets (>4 mm) were enrolled. They were treated either with UST (n = 29) or PDT (n = 25). Clinical and microbiological examinations were performed at baseline and after 3 months. For UST, the mean probing depth was reduced from 5.3 to 4.5 mm (p = <0.0

Mutans streptococci in subgingival plaque of treated and untreated patients with periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of root caries is thought to be identical to coronal caries, though root caries seem to be more complicated because of the higher susceptibility of exposed roots (dentin) by periodontal therapy to demineralization than intact enamel. This implies that mutans streptococci are the most likely pathogens in the development of root caries. Although it is known that both the numbers of mutans streptococci and the frequency of isolation in root caries lesions are negatively correlated with the distance from the gingival margin, the subgingival sulcus has not been considered a

Periodontal Tissue Regeneration Using Syngeneic Adipose-Derived Stromal Cells in a Mouse Model.

Current treatment of periodontitis is still associated with a high degree of variability in clinical outcomes. Recent advances in regenerative medicine by mesenchymal cells, including adipose stromal cells (ASC) have paved the way to improved periodontal regeneration (PD) but little is known about the biological processes involved. Here, we aimed to use syngeneic ASCs for periodontal regeneration in a new, relevant, bacteria-induced periodontitis model in mice. Periodontal defects were induced in female C57BL6/J mice by oral gavage with periodontal pathogens. We grafted 2 × 105 syngeneic mouse

Association between periodontal status and pre-term and/or low-birth weight in Spain: clinical and microbiological parameters.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Studies performed over the last 15 years have suggested that periodontal diseases may be associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, this association has not been found in all populations. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether periodontal status and the presence of specific periodontal pathogens may influence the incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Pregnant women were clinically examined before 26th week of gestation, and divided in two groups: non-periodontitis and periodontitis. Microbial samples were obtained in the peri

Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) for severe cat bite infections with negative aerobic culture: a single-center retrospective study in a rabies vaccination center.

BACKGROUND: Cat bite infections are common emergency settings and are characterized by small, deep puncture wounds that readily form an anaerobic microenvironment, leading to a high incidence of anaerobic bacterial infections. Conventional aerobic bacterial culture has extremely low detection efficiency for such infections and is prone to false-negative results and delayed treatment. As a designated regional rabies vaccination and treatment center, our hospital manages refractory and severe animal bite cases referred from primary medical institutions, with an annual volume of approximately 300

Oral Microbiome as a Tool of Systemic Disease on Cleft Patients: A New Landscape.

The oral cavity microbiome comprises benign and pathogenic bacteria, with more than 700 species identified. However, the current literature regarding resident bacterial flora in the oropharyngeal cavities in cleft lip/palate (CLP) patients still needs to be completed. This review aims to evaluate the role of the oral microbiome of cleft patients as an indicator in systemic diseases for which cleft patients might be at higher risk in the short or long term. A literature review was performed in July 2020 using Biomedical Reference Collection Comprehensive, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied

Evaluating differences in uterine microbiome and inflammatory status at 1 month postpartum associated with metritis and antibiotic treatment.

Ceftiofur treatment in cows with metritis enhances the likelihood of clinical cure but does not consistently improve subsequent pregnancy rates compared with healthy (nonmetritis) cows. We tested the hypothesis that ceftiofur treatment has no effect on uterine microbiota or endometrial inflammation at 1 mo postpartum in cows that were either healthy or diagnosed with metritis at 5 to 10 d postpartum. Cows diagnosed with metritis were matched with healthy cows in a 2 × 2 factorial design where they were either treated with an antibiotic (ceftiofur hydrochloride) or left untreated. Cows were sla

Clinical Study and Microbiological Analysis of Periodontopathogenic Microflora Analyzed among Children and Adolescents with Cardiovascular Diseases Compared to Group with Good General Status.

Periodontal diseases, as an important part of oral pathology, present different characteristics when affecting children and adolescents or young adults. Studies have shown that adolescence and childhood are closely related to a high risk of periodontal disease, but the follow-up for periodontal health or damage at this age has been insufficiently appreciated until now. The aim of this study was to identify subgingival microorganisms using a real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in a group of children and adolescents aged 7-17 years with and without cardiovascular disease. The group of 62 s

A single-center, retrospective study of hospitalized patients with lower respiratory tract infections: clinical assessment of metagenomic next-generation sequencing and identification of risk factors in patients.

INTRODUCTION: Lower respiratory tract infections(LRTIs) in adults are complicated by diverse pathogens that challenge traditional detection methods, which are often slow and insensitive. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) offers a comprehensive, high-throughput, and unbiased approach to pathogen identification. This retrospective study evaluates the diagnostic efficacy of mNGS compared to conventional microbiological testing (CMT) in LRTIs, aiming to enhance detection accuracy and enable early clinical prediction. METHODS: In our retrospective single-center analysis, 451 patients w

Effect of rumen-protected choline on dairy cow metabolism, immunity, lactation performance, and vaginal discharge microbiome.

Rumen-protected choline (RPC) promotes benefits in milk production, immunity, and health in dairy cows by optimizing lipid metabolism during transition period management and early lactation. However, the RPC success in dairy cows depends on choline bioavailability, which is affected by the type of protection used in rumen-protected choline. Therefore, our objectives were to determine the effects of a novel RPC on dry matter intake (DMI), identify markers of metabolism and immunity, and evaluate lactation performance. Dry Holstein (n = 48) cows at 245 ± 3 d of gestation were blocked by parity a

Does timing of systemic antibiotics influence periodontal treatment outcomes? A randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to determine whether the timing of metronidazole (MTZ) and amoxicillin (AMX) administration, relative to scaling and root planing (SRP), influences the clinical and microbiological outcomes of periodontal treatment. METHODS: In this double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial, subjects with stage III/IV periodontitis were assigned to receive SRP over 14 days with either (1) MTZ+AMX three times a day (TID) during SRP followed by placebo (early antibiotic group) or (2) placebo during SRP followed by MTZ + AMX TID immediately after SRP (late a
