Gold salts are used for rheumatoid arthritis, and also in resistant corticosteroid dermatoses such as pemphigus. Gold salts inhibit the expression of endothelial cell adhesion molecules, but activity varies from one molecule to another; thiomalate alone gives the same effect. Patients given gold salts have as high risk of cutaneous reactions, and a provisional diagnosis of "gold dermatisis" is insufficient. The first evidence for the oncogenic potential of human papillomaviruses (HPVs) was obtained through the study of epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV). This rare skin disease is characterized by disseminated, refractor, pityriasis versicolor-like lesions as well as flat wart-like lesions, and by the development of skin carcinomas in about 30% of the patients. BACKGROUND: Lipophilic basidiomycetous yeasts of the Malassezia genus can cause various skin diseases, such as seborrheic dermatitis, pityriasis versicolor, folliculitis and atopic dermatitis, and even life-threatening fungemia in newborns and immunocompromised individuals. The side effects of prolonged isotretinoin therapy include progressive calcification of ligamentous and tendon insertions, premature fusion of epiphyses, and modeling abnormalities of long bones. Increased calcification of gastric mucosa has been reported only in animal studies, but not in humans. A case of a child who was treated with isotretinoin for 26 months for a dermatologic disorder and who showed abnormal gastric uptake of 99m-Tc MDP on a bone scan is reported.
