The synaptic output of retinal bipolar cells was monitored by recording light-evoked EPSCs in ganglion cells. Application of (RS)-2-amino-3-(3-hydroxy-5-tert-butyl-4-isoxazolyl (ATPA), a selective agonist at kainate receptors, depolarized amacrine cells and reduced the light-evoked excitatory current (L-EPSC) in ganglion cells. ATPA had only a slight effect on the light responses of bipolar cells. Therefore, ATPA suppresses bipolar cell synaptic output to ganglion cells. Eighteen patients with serious Bacteroides infections were treated with systemic clindamycin-2-phosphate. Sixteen patients recovered without complications while two patients died. Few side effects were noted. The infections treated included septic abortion, posthysterectomy infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, perforation of the bowel, postoperative complications of abdominal surgery and pancreatic abscess. The clinical usefulness of this drug in treating Bacteroides infection is confirmed.

We report a patient with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) after autologous stem cell transplantation (SCT) for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). This is an unusual association, and to date only seven cases have been reported. This is the first case of PML after SCT treated with cidofovir, and the fifth case treated with this drug in a patient without human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. In the previous four patients treated with cidofovir the outcome was discouraging, as was the case in this patient.

A patient suffering from common variable immunodeficiency is described, who developed a myelitis under treatment with glucocorticosteroids. Later on, autoimmune complications had to be treated with azathioprine. An exacerbation of the myelitis, retinitis, encephalitis and colitis was observed and a cytomegalovirus infection diagnosed. This infection does not represent a typical complication of common variable immunodeficiency. A functional NK cell defect was detected that may contribute to susceptibility for cytomegalovirus infection in addition to immunosuppressive therapy.
