Enhancing the potential for cadmium phytoremediation by introducing Perilla frutescens genes in tobacco.

To improve the potential of cadmium phytoremediation, distant hybridization between tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. var. 78-04), a high-biomass crop, and Perilla frutescens var. frutescens, a wild Cd-hyperaccumulator, was carried out, developing a new variety N. tabacum L. var. ZSY. Seedlings at the six-leaf stage were grown in hydroponics and treated with 0 (control), 10 µM, 180 µM, and 360 µM CdCl2 for 7 days; then, the differences in Cd tolerance and accumulation and physiological and metabolic responses were evaluated among "ZSY" and its parents. At high Cd dose, the growth of "ZSY," such as

Response to stress and allergen production caused by metal ions (Ni, Cu and Zn) in oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) plants.

Heavy metals are the cause of one of the most significant biosphere contamination problems worldwide, as they can be highly reactive and toxic according to their oxidation levels. Their toxic effects are correlated with the elevated production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative cellular damage occurring in plants. The aim of the present study was the investigation of the effects of three heavy metals (Ni, Cu, Zn) applied to the soil in biochemical defense-related responses and allergen production in the aromatic plant oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) from the Lamiaceae family. The con

Early induced protein 1 (PrELIP1) and other photosynthetic, stress and epigenetic regulation genes are involved in Pinus radiata D. don UV-B radiation response.

The continuous atmospheric and environmental deterioration is likely to increase, among others, the influx of ultraviolet B (UV-B) radiation. The plants have photoprotective responses, which are complex mechanisms involving different physiological responses, to avoid the damages caused by this radiation that may lead to plant death. We have studied the adaptive responses to UV-B in Pinus radiata, given the importance of this species in conifer forests and reforestation programs. We analyzed the photosynthetic activity, pigments content, and gene expression of candidate genes related to photosy

Comparative Study on Photoinhibition Characteristics and Adaptation Mechanisms of New Current-Year Needles of Pinus densiflora var. zhangwuensis and Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica in Sandy Land Environments.

Whether photoinhibition occurs in tall trees of Pinus densiflora var. zhangwuensis and P. sylvestris var. mongolica in summer and their response mechanisms to strong midday light in sandy land are not yet clear. Therefore, three standard trees were selected for each species as biological replicates by randomly setting up standard plots. Daily changes in the chlorophyll a fluorescence parameter of current-year needles (CYNs) and one-year needles (OYNs) in different parts of the standard tree crowns (in sun branches and shade branches) of the two species were comparatively studied, and the poten

Myo-inositol mitigates heat-induced leaf senescence by enhancing antioxidant defense, sugar metabolism, and heat shock pathway in creeping bentgrass.

Myo-inositol (MI) plays an important regulatory role in plant stress adaptation, but limited investigation has been conducted to reveal potential mechanisms of MI-regulated leaf senescence under heat stress. This study investigated how foliar-applied MI (0.5 mM) influences heat tolerance in cool-season creeping bentgrass by examining its effects on photosynthetic stability, sugar metabolism, the accumulation of pyruvic acid (PA), antioxidant defense systems, and heat shock transcription pathways. Plants with or without the exogenous MI application were subjected to high-temperature stress (35/

Rational Design of Photosynthesis-Inspired Nanomedicines.

The sun is the most abundant source of energy on earth. Phototrophs have discovered clever strategies to harvest this light energy and convert it to chemical energy for biomass production. This is achieved in light-harvesting complexes, or antennas, that funnel the exciton energy into the reaction centers. Antennas contain an array of chlorophylls, linear tetrapyrroles, and carotenoid pigments spatially controlled by neighboring proteins. This fine-tuned regulation of protein-pigment arrangements is crucial for survival in the conditions of both excess and extreme light deficit. Photomedicine

Sensitized photooxygenation of the fungicide furalaxyl.

BACKGROUND: The photolysis of pesticides is of high current interest since light is one of the most important abiotic factors which are responsible for the environmental fate of these substances and may induce their conversion into noxious products. The action of light can also be mediated by oxygen and synthetic or naturally occurring substances which act as sensitizers. Our objective in this study was to investigate the photochemical behaviour of the systemic fungicide furalaxyl in the presence of oxygen and various sensitizers, and to compare the toxicity of the main photoproduct(s) to that

Multi-omics strategies uncover the molecular mechanisms of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium deficiency responses in Brassica napus.

BACKGROUND: Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) are critical macronutrients in crops, such that deficiency in any of N, P or K has substantial effects on crop growth. However, the specific commonalities of plant responses to different macronutrient deficiencies remain largely unknown. METHODS: Here, we assessed the phenotypic and physiological performances along with whole transcriptome and metabolomic profiles of rapeseed seedlings exposed to N, P and K deficiency stresses. RESULTS: Quantities of reactive oxygen species were significantly increased by all macronutrient deficienci

Ascorbic acid deficiency leads to increased grain chalkiness in transgenic rice for suppressed of L-GalLDH.

The grain chalkiness of rice (Oryza sativa L.), which determines the rice quality and price, is a major concern in rice breeding. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays a critical role in regulating rice endosperm chalkiness. Ascorbic acid (Asc) is a major plant antioxidant, which strictly regulates the levels of ROS. l-galactono-1, 4-lactone dehydrogenase (L-GalLDH, EC 1.3.2.3) is an enzyme that catalyzes the last step of Asc biosynthesis in higher plants. Here we show that the L-GalLDH-suppressed transgenic rice, GI-1 and GI-2, which have constitutively low (between 30% and 50%) leaf and grain

Overexpression of Poplar PtrWRKY89 in Transgenic Arabidopsis Leads to a Reduction of Disease Resistance by Regulating Defense-Related Genes in Salicylate- and Jasmonate-Dependent Signaling.

The plant hormones jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA) play key roles in plant defenses against pathogens and several WRKY transcription factors have been shown to have a role in SA/JA crosstalk. In a previous study, overexpression of the poplar WRKY gene PtrWRKY89 enhanced resistance to pathogens in transgenic poplars. In this study, the promoter of PtrWRKY89 (ProPtrWRKY89) was isolated and used to drive GUS reporter gene. High GUS activity was observed in old leaves of transgenic Arabidopsis containing ProPtrWRKY89-GUS construct and GUS expression was extremely induced by SA solution

Intraspecific variation of physiological and molecular response to cadmium stress in Populus nigra L.

Little is known about the variability of response to heavy metal stress within tree species, although it could be a key for a better understanding of tolerance mechanisms and for breeding. The aim of the present study was to characterize the natural variation of response to cadmium (Cd) in Populus nigra L. in order to understand the mechanisms of Cd tolerance. For that, two P. nigra genotypes, originating from contrasting environments in northern (genotype 58-861) and southern (genotype Poli) Italy, were exposed to Cd stress in hydroponics for 3 weeks. The effect of stress was estimated by mea

Carbon quantum dots and mycorrhizal fungi improve cadmium stress tolerance and essential oil production in grapefruit mint (Mentha suaveolens × piperita).

Cadmium (Cd) is a non-essential, highly phytotoxic element and a widespread pollutant in agricultural soils. Employing biofertilizers and nanoparticles (NPs) has been identified as an effective strategy to alleviate the detrimental impacts of heavy metal (HM)-contaminated soils. Previous studies have provided partial insights into the individual roles of CQD‑NPs and AMF under drought stress; however, information on their combined effects is still limited and fragmented. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the individual and synergistic effects of CQD-NPs and AMF on the yield and EO

Assessing water quality and classifying trophic status for scientifically based managing the water resources of the Lake Timsah, the lake with salinity stratification along the Suez Canal.

Lake Timsah is considered as the biggest water body at Ismailia City with a surface area of 14 km2. It is a saline shallow water basin lies approximately mid-way between the south city of Suez and the north city of Port Said at 30o35'46.55"N and 32o19'30.54″E. Because it receives water with high and low salinities, salinity stratification is producing in the Lake Timsah, with values of 14-40‰ for the surface water and over 40‰ for the bottom water. The temperature of the lake water decreased to below 19 °C in the winter and rose to above 29 °C in the summer; the concentration of dissolved oxyg

Does nitrate co-pollution affect biological responses of an aquatic plant to two common herbicides?

Aquatic systems in agricultural landscapes are subjected to multiple stressors, among them pesticide and nitrate run-off, but effects of both together have rarely been studied. We investigated possible stress-specific and interaction effects using the new OECD test organism, Myriophyllum spicatum, a widespread aquatic plant. In a fully factorial design, we used two widely applied herbicides, isoproturon and mesosulfuron-methyl, in concentration-response curves at two nitrate levels (219.63 and 878.52mg N-NO3). We applied different endpoints reflecting plant performance such as growth, pigment

Structural rearrangements in chloroplast thylakoid membranes revealed by differential scanning calorimetry and circular dichroism spectroscopy. Thermo-optic effect.

The thermo-optic mechanism in thylakoid membranes was earlier identified by measuring the thermal and light stabilities of pigment arrays with different levels of structural complexity [Cseh, Z., et al. (2000) Biochemistry 39, 15250-15257]. (According to the thermo-optic mechanism, fast local thermal transients, arising from the dissipation of excess, photosynthetically not used, excitation energy, induce elementary structural changes due to the "built-in" thermal instabilities of the given structural units.) The same mechanism was found to be responsible for the light-induced trimer-to-monome

"Assessment of potential eutrophication in coastal waters of Gran Canaria: Impact on plankton community under CO2 depletion".

Population growth in coastal tourist areas is leading to enhanced waste production, raising concerns about potential nutrient release increases and the resulting impact on marine ecosystems through eutrophication. Knowledge of the specific impacts of eutrophication on plankton communities in many of these regions is limited, highlighting the need for further research and appropriate environmental management strategies. To help address these gaps, we conducted a 30-day mesocosm study in the coastal waters of Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, a major European tourist destination, and the third most
