Effects of Early Life Oral Arsenic Exposure on Intestinal Tract Development and Lipid Homeostasis in Neonatal Mice: Implications for NAFLD Development.

BACKGROUND: Newborns can be exposed to inorganic arsenic (iAs) through contaminated drinking water, formula, and other infant foods. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated a positive association between urinary iAs levels and the risk of developing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) among U.S. adolescents and adults. OBJECTIVES: The present study examined how oral iAs administration to neonatal mice impacts the intestinal tract, which acts as an early mediator for NAFLD. METHODS: Neonatal mice were treated with a single dose of iAs via oral gavage. Effects on the small intestine wer

A multicenter study on epidemiological and clinical characteristics of 125 newborns born to women infected with COVID-19 by Turkish Neonatal Society.

Limited data are available on pregnant women with COVID-19 and their neonates. We aimed to evaluate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of newborns born to women infected with COVID-19. A multicenter cohort study was conducted among newborns born to mothers with COVID-19 in 34 neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in Turkey. Pregnant women (n = 125) who had a positive RT-PCR test and their newborns were enrolled. Cesarean section, prematurity, and low-birthweight infant rates were 71.2%, 26.4%, and 12.8%, respectively. Eight of 125 mothers (6.4%) were admitted to an intensive care

Supplementation of dietary non-digestible oligosaccharides from birth onwards improve social and reduce anxiety-like behaviour in male BALB/c mice.

Objective: The intestinal microbiota is acknowledged to be essential in brain development and behaviour. Their composition can be modulated by prebiotics such as short-chain galacto-oligosaccharides (scGOS) and long-chain fructo-oligosaccharide (lcFOS). Several studies reported potential health benefit of prebiotics on behaviour. As the prebiotic mixture of scGOS and lcFOS is included in infant formula, we investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with this specific mixture from the day of birth onwards on behaviour and intestinal microbiota development in mice. Method: Healthy male

The introduction of a paediatric nutrition support program led by a clinical dietitian at a low-resource hospital setting in Malawi.

In low- and middle-income countries, nutrition support strategies are often suboptimal or non-existent in hospital settings. This is further compounded by high rates of malnutrition in these countries. The first four dietitians graduated in Malawi in 2017 providing a new opportunity to build capacity to introduce nutrition support in an acute care setting. A paediatric nutrition support program was implemented at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre, Malawi including the hiring of a local dietitian. This capacity building paper explains the development and introduction of the nu

Detection of Mycobacteria by Culture and DNA-Based Methods in Animal-Derived Food Products Purchased at Spanish Supermarkets.

Mycobacteria include obligate and opportunistic pathogens that cause significant human and animal disease. The burden of tuberculosis has been largely reduced in developed territories but remains a huge problem worldwide. The significance of nontuberculous mycobacteria is growing considerably, especially in developed regions with higher life expectancy and more therapy-related immunosuppressed individuals. Due to their robustness mycobacteria can contaminate animal products by direct transmission from infected individuals or by environmental contamination during processing. The situation at ma

Rural parents' adherence to infant feeding guidelines to prevent allergy: a cross sectional study in New South Wales.

BACKGROUND: Responding to international research showing that early introduction of common food allergens can reduce the chance of developing allergies, in 2016 the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) revised allergen introduction guidelines, recommending earlier introduction of allergens to infants in their first year. Australia has high food allergy rates, and limited understanding of adherence to allergen introduction guidelines, especially in rural areas. This project explored rural parent adherence to ASCIA guidelines. METHODS: This was a mixed method cross se

Inhibition of cow's milk allergy development in mice by oral delivery of β-lactoglobulin-derived peptides loaded PLGA nanoparticles is associated with systemic whey-specific immune silencing.

BACKGROUND: Two to four percentage of infants are affected by cow's milk allergy (CMA), which persists in 20% of cases. Intervention approaches using early oral exposure to cow's milk protein or hydrolysed cow's milk formula are being studied for CMA prevention. Yet, concerns regarding safety and/or efficacy remain to be tackled in particular for high-risk non-exclusively breastfed infants. Therefore, safe and effective strategies to improve early life oral tolerance induction may be considered. OBJECTIVE: We aim to investigate the efficacy of CMA prevention using oral pre-exposure of two sel

The role of prenatal food insecurity on breastfeeding behaviors: findings from the United States pregnancy risk assessment monitoring system.

BACKGROUND: In addition to its health and nutritional benefits, breastfeeding can save low-income, food insecure mothers the cost of infant formula so that money can be spent on food and other necessities. Yet breastfeeding may exacerbate food insecurity by negatively affecting maternal employment. The relationship between food insecurity and breastfeeding has been explored previously, with varying results. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between prenatal food insecurity and breastfeeding initiation and early cessation (< 10 weeks) among U.S. mothers. METHODS: Data

Some good news in a changing world? Is the incidence of pyloric stenosis decreasing?

BACKGROUND: Infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS) is a common cause of gastric outlet obstruction in infancy, but its incidence in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) region has not been previously studied. This study aimed to analyse changes in IHPS incidence over thirty years and evaluate potential factors related to IHPS, including antibiotic use, proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use, and feeding methods. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed the clinical records of IHPS patients from 1992 to 2022. A linear regression was performed to analyse the change in incidence rates. Factors su

Maternal High-Fat Diet Worsens Necrotizing Enterocolitis via Effects on Mitochondrial Function in Newborn Mice.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a life-threatening intestinal disease of preterm infants that causes epithelial injury and necrosis. Prematurity and postnatal formula administration are known contributors, but maternal nutrition may also influence offspring gut susceptibility. The biological relationship between maternal diet and neonatal intestinal vulnerability remains unclear. METHODS: A maternal high-fat diet (HFD) mouse model with a neonatal NEC model were used to investigate how maternal HFD affects offspring outcomes. Bulk RNA sequencing of ileal tissue before NEC

Local Peritoneal Cytokine Response IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α in a Standardized Neonatal Rat Model of Necrotizing Enterocolitis.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a life-threatening inflammatory disease of preterm infants, increasingly viewed as a cytokine-driven disorder of the immature intestine. We aimed to characterize local peritoneal concentrations of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in a standardized neonatal rat NEC model and relate them to histopathological injury. Seventy-four SPRD/Mol/Lodz rat pups were allocated to a control group (CTRL; n = 12) or subjected to a hypoxia-hypothermia-formula-feeding NEC protocol (NEC; n = 62). After 72 h, small-intestinal samples were scored usin

The Benefits and Biological Risks in Breastfeeding and Sharing Human Milk: Have We Got it Right?

BACKGROUND: Implementation of the strong recommendation by the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and others, to increase use of donor human milk in cases where breastfeeding cannot be provided, requires a flexible, knowledge-based and risk-informed approach. METHODS: Based on an extensive literature review, we present the evidence for potential biological risks of breastmilk in three scenarios: fresh, unmodified milk from breast to baby (breastfeeding and wet-nursing); expressed and unmodified milk stored at < 4 ºC until just before consumption; and

Ten-Day-Old Neonate Cocaine Exposure and Human Milk: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months of life. Substances used by the nursing mother may be transported through human milk (HM) and absorbed through the infant's gastrointestinal tract; thus, a mother's exposure to illicit drugs such as cocaine (COC) may pose a risk to the breastfeeding child's health. MAIN ISSUE: On January 19, a 10-day-old newborn girl was admitted at 9 am to the municipal emergency room with cyanosis, abundant sialorrhea (drooling or salivation), and without clinical response even after being stimulated. The mo

Update of the scientific opinion on tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and its derivatives in food.

The European Commission asked EFSA to update its 2011 risk assessment on tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and five derivatives in food. Neurotoxicity and carcinogenicity were considered as the critical effects of TBBPA in rodent studies. The available evidence indicates that the carcinogenicity of TBBPA occurs via non-genotoxic mechanisms. Taking into account the new data, the CONTAM Panel considered it appropriate to set a tolerable daily intake (TDI). Based on decreased interest in social interaction in male mice, a lowest observed adverse effect level (LOAEL) of 0.2 mg/kg body weight (bw) per
