Predicting the environmental fate of marine microplastics (MPs) requires a process-based understanding of surface transformations upon exposure. However, current knowledge relies heavily on laboratory simulations or isolated physicochemical/microbial perspectives. Here, we conducted in situ aging of four globally abundant MPs-polystyrene (PS), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-in coastal waters within one month. Alterations in surface micro-morphology, nanomechanical properties, chemical functionalization, and elemental composition, alongside prokaryot

In zoos, intensive human contact and artificial feeding may create pathways for microplastic (MP) ingestion and gut colonization. We hypothesized that ingested MPs form intestinal plastispheres with elevated pathogenic potential and enhanced environmental persistence. To test this, we surveyed feces from 15 zoo-dwelling species and coupled particle characterization, feces-derived intestinal simulations, metagenomic sequencing, and a subsequent water-exposure experiment. Zoo feces contained more abundant MPs than reported for wild counterparts, with fragments predominating and polyethylene tere

Landfill leachate has emerged as a least explored pathway of microplastic release to the environment and a potential reservoir of toxic contaminants such as heavy metals. The study investigates the polluting potential of microplastic and heavy metals originating from landfill leachate at an urban municipal solid waste disposal site Njeliyanparamba in Northern-Kerala (processes ∼100 tons of municipal solid-waste daily and holds legacy waste accumulated over 15 years) through an integrated analytical approach. The results showed that the abundance of microplastic in the leachate ranges between 1

In the Three Gorges Reservoir, interactions between microplastics (MPs) and sediments govern MP-sediment transport, but floc formation under varying flows remains unclear. Heterogeneous coagulation of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS) with sediment was investigated using a custom water tank fitted with a continuously adjustable motor-driven agitating valve to generate shear rates (G = 10-160 s-1). The results indicated that the mean floc size initially increased and then leveled off with time under shear. At the end of the 180 min experiments, the floc sizes reached 107.03 μm

This study reports the synthesis and catalytic evaluation of a series of imidazolium-based polymeric ionic liquids (PILs) for the cycloaddition of CO2 to epichlorohydrin (ECH). The synthesized catalysts include homopolymers, poly(3-hydroxyethyl-1-vinylimidazole chloride) (p[HVIm][Cl]) and poly(3-carboxymethyl-1-vinylimidazole chloride) (p[CMVIm][Cl]), and their block copolymers with polystyrene, synthesized for the first time, pS-b-p[HVIm][Cl] and pS-b-p[CMVIm][Cl]. Structural characterization by NMR, IR spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography confirmed the successful synthesis. The bl

Most in vitro chemical safety workflows are performed in ambient air, although many human tissues experience substantially lower physiological oxygen levels. This mismatch can alter redox tone, stress-response signaling, and interpretation of chemical effects. Here, we present R3ACT (Redox & Antioxidant Capacity Tracker), an animal-free, oxygen-controlled live-cell NAM for mechanistic profiling of redox perturbation and antioxidant-response activation. In human HaCaT keratinocytes adapted to 5 kPa O₂, R3ACT combines viability-gated concentration selection, oxygen-controlled plate-reader measur

Microplastic (MPs) pollution has emerged as a major global concern due to its potential impacts on human and animal health. In this 60-day oral study, male Swiss mice were exposed to polystyrene microplastics (Ps-MPs; 10 mg/kg b.wt), and the protective efficacy of taurine (Tau; 200 mg/kg b.wt) was assessed with particular focus on renal function, oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, fibrosis, and gene expression. Ps-MPs exposure markedly disrupted kidney function, as indicated by reduced total protein alongside elevated serum creatinine, urea, and uric acid. Renal homogenate analysis rev

BACKGROUND: Myoglobin is a middle-molecule protein released into the bloodstream during rhabdomyolysis, where it contributes to acute kidney injury (AKI) through hemodynamic, oxidative, and obstructive mechanisms. High cut-off membranes may enhance myoglobin clearance but carry a risk of clinically relevant albumin and other protein losses. Hemoadsorption may overcome these limitations. This study aimed to assess the adsorption capacity of a neutral microporous styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer sorbent for myoglobin.
METHODS: We performed two ex vivo hemoadsorption experiments using mini modul

The lack of precise thermal feedback from local treatment sites and potential safety risks caused by the shedding of sensing materials remain critical bottlenecks, limiting the clinical translation of in vivo implantable sensors and therapeutic platforms. Herein, we report removable, near-infrared (NIR)-responsive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) microneedles with actual subcutaneous temperature feedback (RTF-SEMNs). Constructed on rigid polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) arrays, the microneedle tips are densely modified with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). For in situ thermal monitoring, a hi

Synthetic blood contacting devices frequently fail due to the lack of requisite biochemical and biomechanical cues needed to support transanastamotic endothelialization. During transanastomotic endothelialization, endothelial cells experience dynamic changes in extracellular mechanical cues as they migrate from compliant native vessels onto stiffer blood contacting device surfaces. However, how substrate stiffness and mechanical memory from prior mechanical environments influence temporal integrin remodeling and downstream endothelialization processes necessary to establish a stable endothelia

Tissue elasticity is essential to a broad spectrum of cell biology and organ function including the heart. Routine cell culture models on rigid polystyrene dishes are limited in studying the impact of tissue elasticity in distinct regions of the myocardium such as the cardiac conduction system. Gelatin, a derivative of collagen, is a simple and tunable platform for modeling tissue elasticity. We sought to study the effects of increasing tissue stiffness on cardiac pacemaker cell function by using transcription factor-reprogrammed pacemaker cells cultured on gelatin hydrogels with specific elas

Exposure of organisms to nanoplastics (NPs) is inevitable given their global abundance and environmental persistence. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a common plastic used in a wide range of products, including clothing and food and beverage packaging. Recent studies suggest that NPs can cross the blood-brain barrier and cause potential neurotoxicity. It is widely known that aggregation of amyloid beta (Aβ) peptides in the brain is a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). While the impact of nanoplastics such as polystyrene (PS) on amyloid aggregation has been studied, the effe

The intensive production and use of plastics, poor biodegradability and inadequate recycling have caused excessive and alarming environmental pollution. This has led to the inevitable intake by humans, through different routes, of small plastic particles, the micro and nano-plastics (MNPs) with sizes ranging from nanometers (<1000 nm) to micrometers (from 5 mm to 1 µm). MNPs can cause harmful effects in human tissues and organs, contributing to the early onset of aging and various age-related diseases. A growing body of evidence supports this toxic role of MNPs. In this regard, it has been sho

The mechanisms of triclosan (TCS) adsorption onto polyamide (PA), polystyrene (PS), polyvinylchloride (PVC) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) microplastics (MPs) were investigated, along with the effects of solution pH, ionic strength, and dissolved organic matter (DOM). The Linear model better described TCS adsorption isotherms suggesting that hydrophobic partitioning was the primary mechanism for TCS adsorption, while the Freundlich and Langmuir model fittings showed that TCS adsorption onto MPs was favorable. Following normalization by the specific surface area (SSA) of MPs, adsorption di

INTRODUCTION: Diseases triggered by glucose and lipid metabolic disorders, such as hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia, have become a global health threat. According to statistics, diabetic patients have exceeded 463 million worldwide, and the prevalence of hyperlipidemia is also continuously rising. These glycolipid metabolic diseases not only significantly increase the risk of complications such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, and kidney disease but also impose a huge economic burden on the global healthcare system. Despite the continuous emergence of treatment methods for glucose and lipid

BACKGROUND: Hyperkalemia, generally defined as serum potassium levels greater than 5.0 mEq/L, poses significant clinical risks, including cardiac toxicity and muscle weakness. Its prevalence and severity increase in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetes mellitus, and heart failure (HF), particularly when compounded by medications like angiotensin converting inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, and potassium sparing diuretics. Hyperkalemia arises from disruptions in potassium regulation involving intake, excretion, and intracellular-extracellular distribution. In CKD and ac

Parathyroid hormone (PTH), an 84-amino acid polypeptide critical for calcium/phosphorus homeostasis, exhibits significant analytical challenges in clinical quantification, particularly in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients due to its low circulating concentrations, biological matrix complexity, and interference from circulating PTH fragments. Traditional immunoassays may either overestimate the PTH level due to cross-reactivity with the PTH 7-84 or fail to quantify the antagonistic fragment. Highly sensitive and selective mass spectrometry (MS)-based methods could be used as the reference m

Microplastics (MPs), as ubiquitous pollutants in aquatic environments, constitute a significant component of water pollution, posing substantial ingestion risks to directly exposed fish. However, research on the potential toxic effects and underlying mechanisms of MPs on fish gills remains insufficient. Therefore, this study investigated the impacts of exposure to different concentrations of polystyrene MPs (100 and 400 μg/L) on the histological structure and gene expression in the gills of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus). Through integrated histopathological and transcriptomic analyses,

Microplastics (MPs) have emerged as a pervasive environmental pollutant of global concern. Their detection within the human placenta and fetal organs has prompted apprehension regarding the potential hazards of MPs during early organogenesis. The kidney, a vital multifunctional organ, is susceptible to damage from MPs in adulthood. However, the precise adverse effects of MP exposure on human nephrogenesis remain ambiguous due to the absence of a suitable model. Here, we explore the potential impact of MPs on early kidney development utilizing human kidney organoids in vitro. Human kidney organ
